Histor ical ly known as the Dougherty house, t h i s two-story e l l - shaped dwelling
has marked the northwest corner of Prince William and Church s t ree ts for over
o n e - h u n d r e d a n d f i f ty y e a r s . The P r i n c e William S t r e e t e l e v a t i o n offers a n
in te res t ing con t ra s t between antebellum and postbellum arch i tec tura l s ty les common
to Somerset County. The western half of the front block i s thought to have been
erected around 1835 under the ownership of John H. King, a prominent Princess
Anne merchant , who purchased "Lot 18" i n January of t h a t year for $895. The
two-s tory , t h ree -bay frame house followed the well-used vernacular side h a l l / p a r l o r
k")lan, which was trimmed with l a t e Federal s ty le woodwork. Providing cooking
services in a t r a d i t i o n a l manner was a two-story frame kitchen at tached to the
front block by a s ingle-s tory hyphen. Although the kitchen of the Dougherty house
has been though t by some to da te to the eighteenth cen tury , a rch i tec tura l features
and t a x records indica te i t was erected a t the same t ime. The house evidently
maintained t h i s t r ad i t i ona l stepped shape un t i l the Civil War. In 1867, the house
and lo t were t ransfer red to Zadoc Dougherty, in the wake of a cour t settlement of
William J . Byrd, who had purchased the house from Charlotte King.
During Zadoc Dougherty's owership of the house, which stretched from 1867
to 1910, he financed the severa l changes to the house. Most notable was the
bracketed addi t ion to the e a s t gable end of the old King house. In an attempt to
keep i n s tep with prevai l ing Civil War e ra t a s t e s , t he extension was trimmed with
liave b racke t s and fitted ins ide with bold mid nineteenth-century t r im. Also dur ing
Dougherty ownership of the house, t he hyphen was given a second floor, and a two-
story section was added on the r ea r ins ide corner .

From Zadoc Dougherty, the house and lo t passed by deed to Adelia Dougherty
in 1910, and Adelia willed the property to her daugh te r , Ellen M. Dashiell in 1923,
who in t u r n , t r ans fe r red t i t l e in 1928 to Cassius M. Dashiell. The executors of
Cassius M. Dashiel l sold the Prince William Street house to Charles Edwin Hayman
in 1936, and the corner house and lot remained in the Hayman family un t i l 1969.

This house, all of frame, is a composite structure. That which now appears to be the main house is a c. I85O Victorian house 3 bays wide with a heavy bracketed cornice. To the rear of this, however, are two 2 I/2 storey wings which date from the mid l8th C, The back of each addition has an end chimney enclosed within the structure. The clapboards on these sections of the house are wide and lineven and the windows are 6/6 with old glass. The present occupants say that tradition dates these two wings back to the l8th C. and the evidence supports this. The main house to which they were once attached is no* either destroyed or so altered by the Victorian structure as to be unrecognizable. The house is very well-kept up and has a lovely garden with two huge magnolia trees reputed to be 15O years old.
