LIVE THE LITURGY God calls us to bring His Word to all corners of the earth. What does that mean for you and me? We are just simple and humble folks trying to find our way through the Gospel and our world. After all, we are not professional preachers but gentle servants. Jesus summons us to take his message on the road and bring it from the pew to the pavement. We cannot keep the joy of the Gospel to ourselves but must bring it into every aspect of our lives: our families, our schools, our work, our corporations, our politics, our social circles, and our philosophies. We cannot just accept the wisdom of the world as true and conduct our lives as if the Good News is a separate matter. They are one. Jesus never asked his friends to go and construct buildings where people could come to hear the truth. He asked them to go to their homes and meet them one on one, face to face. When the rubber meets the road and the message is challenging, rejection is quite possible. That’s the litmus test for whether we’re really doing what we have been asked.

Jesús nos llama a llevar su mensaje al camino y llevarlo del banco al pavimento. No podemos guardarnos el gozo del Evangelio para nosotros, sino que debemos llevarlo a todos los aspectos de nuestras vidas: nuestras familias, nuestras escuelas, nuestro trabajo, nuestras corporaciones, nuestra política, nuestros círculos sociales y nuestras filosofías. No podemos simplemente aceptar la sabiduría del mundo como verdadera y conducir nuestras vidas como si la Buenas Nueva fuera un asunto aparte. Son uno. Jesús nunca les pidió a sus amigos que fueran a construir edificios donde la gente pudiera venir a escuchar la verdad. Les pidió que fueran a sus casas y se encontraran con ellos uno a uno, cara a cara. Cuando la teoría se pone a prueba y el mensaje es desafiante, el rechazo es bastante posible. As Pope Francis noted for both Saint Joseph and Mary, tenderness is “not the virtue of the weak.” The one who is tender does not act impulsively and snap but stretches in patience and waits on the one who is in need. The tender person does not defeat the enemy through reaction and revenge but patiently absorbs the violence like a house built on rock that weathers a storm. As St. Joseph coura-geously and tenderly led his little family into exile, we do not get the image of a weak man or an elderly, frail man, but rather a man of strength. What kind of religious practices should we begin, once we marry, to help us practice our faith each day? ¿¿Qué tipo de prácticas religiosas debemos comenzar, una vez que nos casemos, para ayudarnos a practicar nuestra fe todos los días?

Your spiritual life as a couple is important. The sacrament of Marriage is a gift and a grace, but living it well isn’t always easy! It requires intentionality and perseverance. Growing your spiritual life as a couple also requires a plan. Life can be incredibly busy. There’s never “enough time” for everything we want to do. But we can live by our priorities. If we don’t prioritize prayer, we’ll find it slowly disappear from our lives. If you’re not already praying individually, that’s a good place to start. If your schedules are similar, take some quiet time at the same time to help hold each other accountable. Praying together is also important! You could start by looking at the religious practices of your family and of families around you that you respect. Talk with your spouse about the ones who make the deepest impression on you or were most meaningful when you were young. Think about what you want your future children to experience. Making faith a commitment now will mean it is engrained habit when you grow your family. Ultimately, these faith practices should help us grow in our love for God and for one another.

Su vida espiritual como pareja es importante. El sacramento del Matrimonio es un don y una gracia, ¡pero vivirlo bien no siempre es fácil! Requiere intencionalidad y perseverancia. El crecimiento de su vida espiritual como pareja también requiere un plan. La vida puede ser increíblemente ajetreada. Nunca hay "tiempo suficiente" para todo lo que queremos hacer. Pero podemos vivir según nuestras prioridades. Si no damos prioridad a la oración, la encontraremos desapareciendo lentamente de nuestras vidas. In my experience, there are two kinds of people: the folks who kick off their shoes the second they walk through the door, and the ones who don’t. People can feel strongly about this on both sides. The main thrust of the Shoes-Off Brigade seems to be this: we track a lot of weird stuff on the soles of our feet. Little reminders of all the places we’ve been — whether it’s a private home or a public bathroom — cling to our shoes long after we leave. This same theory applies to our spiritual lives. As human beings and as disciples, we visit a lot of figurative towns and pick up a lot of figurative dust. Sinfulness. Shame. Defeat. Anger. Fear. Doubt. No matter how hard we try to keep free of it, these things have a way of attaching themselves to us, sometimes without us even noticing. We need to take a good look at what unhelpful and unconstructive baggage from our past we’re tracking into our present and future encounters. What is the “town” God is asking you to visit today in His name? Is it a tough conversation with a friend, a brief witness to a stranger in the checkout line, a call to be present to someone in your family? Before you go, remember, shake off the dust. Don’t let a past disappointment constrain you. Don’t allow yesterday’s failures or burdens to keep you from the joy of today’s witness, whatever form it might take. En mi experiencia, hay dos tipos de personas: las personas que se quitan los zapatos en el momento en que entran por la puerta y las que no lo hacen.
