The first celebraon is the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul on Monday, June 29. The Church honors St. Peter, the first Pope, and St. Paul, the Apostle to the Naons. Both were martyred in the city of Rome and are the patron saints of the city. St. Peter was crucified upside down because he felt he was not worthy to be crucified like Jesus. He was then buried on the Vacan Hill which was across the Tiber river from the city. St. Peter s Basilica was built over his tomb. St. Paul preached the Gospel and founded churches in present day Syria, Greece and Turkey. Eventually he was detained and, as was his right as a Roman cizen, he appealed his case to the Emperor. He was sent to Rome and aſter several years was eventually executed. As a Roman cizen he had the right to be beheaded instead of crucified, and so he was beheaded outside the city and his burial spot is memorialized by the Basilica of St. Paul outside the Walls. Both of these saints lived their vocaons to the fullest. St. Peter was called to be the rock on which the Church was to be built and St. Paul the man born out of the normal course to call the world to follow Jesus Christ. On Saturday, July 4, we will celebrate Independence Day. This day marks the signing of the Declaraon of Independence by the Connental Congress on July 4, 1776. Among the 56 signers of the document was Charles Carroll of Carrollton who was from Maryland. He was the only Catholic member of the Connental Congress and the cousin of the Most Reverend John Carroll, first Bishop of Balmore. Although many dioceses existed on this connent under French and Spanish rule, Balmore was the first diocese in the newly formed United States of America. We are blessed to be members of Holy Catholic Church and cizens of our great country. In conclusion I offer a quote from Archbishop John Carroll s A Prayer for Government: We recommend likewise, to Thy unbounded mercy, all our brethren and fellow cizens throughout the United States, that they may be blessed in the knowledge and sancfied in the observance of Thy most holy law; that they may be preserved in union, and in that peace which the world cannot give; and aſter enjoying the blessings of this life, be admied to those which are eternal. Dear Parish Family,

He was sent to Rome and after several years was eventually executed. As a Roman citizen he had the right to be beheaded instead of crucified, and so he was beheaded outside the city and his burial spot is memorialized by the Basilica of St. Paul outside the Walls. Both of these saints lived their vocations to the fullest. St. Peter was called to be the rock on which the Church was to be built and St. Paul the man born out of the normal course to call the world to follow Jesus Christ.
