Dear Parish Family,
This week we will celebrate two important dates, one on the Church’s calendar of saints and the other on our national calendar. The first celebration is the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul on Monday, June 29. The Church honors St. Peter, the first Pope, and St. Paul, the Apostle to the Nations. Both were martyred in the city of Rome and are the patron saints of the city. St. Peter was crucified upside down because he felt he was not worthy to be crucified like Jesus. He was then buried on the Vatican Hill which was across the Tiber river from the city. St. Peter’s Basilica was built over his tomb. St. Paul preached the Gospel and founded churches in present day Syria, Greece and Turkey. Eventually he was detained and, as was his right as a Roman citizen, he appealed his case to the Emperor. He was sent to Rome and after several years was eventually executed. As a Roman citizen he had the right to be beheaded instead of crucified, and so he was beheaded outside the city and his burial spot is memorialized by the Basilica of St. Paul outside the Walls. Both of these saints lived their vocations to the fullest. St. Peter was called to be the rock on which the Church was to be built and St. Paul the man born out of the normal course to call the world to follow Jesus Christ.
On Saturday, July 4, we will celebrate Independence Day. This day marks the signing of the Declaration of Independence by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776. Among the 56 signers of the document was Charles Carroll of Carrollton who was from Maryland. He was the only Catholic member of the Continental Congress and the cousin of the Most Reverend John Carroll, first Bishop of Baltimore. Although many dioceses existed on this continent under French and Spanish rule, Baltimore was the first diocese in the newly formed United States of America. We are blessed to be members of Holy Catholic Church and citizens of our great country. In conclusion I offer a quote from Archbishop John Carroll’s A Prayer for Government:
We recommend likewise, to Thy unbounded mercy, all our brethren and fellow citizens throughout the United States, that they may be blessed in the knowledge and sanctified in the observance of Thy most holy law; that they may be preserved in union, and in that peace which the world cannot give; and after enjoying the blessings of this life, be admitted to those which are eternal.
God Bless,
Msgr. Martin
