35th Qld State Square Dance Convention 2015

Thank you, Thank you, Thank you, to all the Dancers and Callers & Cuers that made the Conven-

tion what it was. A truly fabulous weekend of Fun, Friendship and Dancing.

15 months of Preparation & Planning.

It all came together in time for State MP for Longman, Mark Ryan MP to officially open the Event.

Our young Bagpiper Mitchell played the National Anthem and then led the Banner Parade into the

Hall.

There were 110 pre-registered dancers for the Convention, with another 11 sold on the Friday night.

Over the weekend, an extra 130+ session tickets were sold.

Stephen Hope prepared the Clogging Programme with over 20 Cloggers filling the C.T Williams

Pavillion.

Phyllis Stewart got the Round dancers going with just the right level of Round Dancing for the

whole weekend. There were at least 12 couples dancing in each session.

All the Square Dance sessions were reasonably well attended.

I guess the only one that was light-on was Saturday afternoon Mainstream, There were however

other choices at the same time, and that might be something to look at in the future.

Friday night had 15 sets dancing at the Main venue with many more in attendance.

Saturday Night had 18 Sets dancing with more sitting and enjoying a cuppa, watching on.

There were still 8 sets of “Diehards” still dancing to the very last minute.

The raffles were very well patronised, plenty of (130+) good prizes won and quite a bit of money

raised.

The canteen was manned by U3A Caboolture for the weekend. I received many positive comments

about the food provided and many comments from the U3A ladies about how much they enjoyed

the weekend.

Suppers on Friday and Saturday night were awesome, more food than the huge crowd could eat.

Overall; Sound for the Convention was good, a few minor hiccups that eventually got solved.

The final event of the Convention was the After Party function.

For those who have not heard Elaine Davis sing; you really missed out.

There was plenty of food: Pizza, Subway type platters, Chicken & Salad, Fruit platters and some

biscuits and cakes. Plenty of Gluten free food available.

The music had everybody dancing; there was definitely something for every taste.

Rock ‘n’ Roll, Line dances, Gypsy Tap, Pride of Erin, Waltzes and even just get on the floor and

“shake what you’ve got” type music.

Again thank you to everybody involved, and especially a big vote of thanks to the Executive and

Dancers of Caboolture E.Z. Squares for hosting this fabulous event.

Attention Dancers

The number of Society Registrations is down this year. What is the reason, do

you know? Are clubs holding on to dancer forms that are already filled out

waiting for the last few before sending them on to the Registrar?

The date for renewal is on or before the 1st July in any given year. If you have

filled out your form and not yet received your registration card, please feel free

to ring me - JUNE LAMBERT on 07 33156007 to see if I have received your

form for processing.

REMEMBER THAT IF YOUR FORM HAS NOT BEEN PROCESSED YOU

ARE NOT COVERED FOR INSURANCE.

If you are thinking of joining your Society then there is still time to renew or

join as a new member. This gives you the right to vote at any

Society meeting, Insurance cover and reduced entrance price at

any Society function throughout the year.

CANE COUNTRY SQUARES

Cane Country Squares has been dancing with varying numbers from week to week. Matthew has again called some more movements ending in a right angle - this time with five members one side and three at the other angle - "thinking outside the square" and keeping us listening for different moves. He also uses the six couple sets when we have extras but not enough for a second set. Shirley has a small class of Round Dancers on Thursdays mornings as well as her after-noon Square Dance group and a keen "A" group during the week. Matthew has been challenging us Sunday afternoons with some interesting "A" dancing. We are lucky to have so much practice with advanced dancing. Some of our members will be able to update us on the State Convention in Caboolture. Please keep the weekend of 31st Oct and 1st November available to join us in Bundaberg for dancing with Nev and Bev McLachlan. A good weekend is assured for all. Saturday: Plus 2.00-4.00pm Rounds - 7.00pm Basic & Mainstream 7.30pm Sunday: A1 & A2 9.30-1.30am Rounds - 1.00pm All at Rum City Band Hall, Targo Street, Bundaberg

RAMBLING EIGHTS - CALLER DAVID PEARCE

With the return of David and Faith imminent we thoroughly enjoyed our time with Noel calling. Our last night was quite a lot of fun dancing. With not enough dancers for two sets at the start of the night, some decided to double up, Kevin and Doug together, Terry with Dougal, Wendy with Ros and Christine with Jan, all adding to the party atmosphere and the enjoyment of the dancers and spectators. Perhaps having enjoyed dinner and a little drink before the dance at the bowls club was a little encouragement to play up a bit.

The ladies are still holding the lucky numbers with the latest winner for first and second place being Jan. Perhaps a man will soon have his lucky number drawn, and break the

ladies winning streak. Our photo identity night is planned for October when all present will be asked to guess

who belongs to each picture of a dancer when a child, with a prize for the most correct guesses.

With the return of travellers our numbers are back to three sets each week, with four on some occasions, and both David and Noel have been challenging many with moves being workshopped from different formations as well as Noel bring back some long lost calls from the past.

We have greatly appreciated Noel being available to take over for David, and wish him

well with his retirement at the end of the year, and his return to family in New Zealand.

SUNSHINE SQUARES

Sunshine Squares recently held a special

Surprise 90th Birthday party for Betty

Burrowes. Betty has danced with Lyn for over 25 years, first at Pine Rangers and now with Sunshine Squares. Betty has also danced at other clubs across Brisbane and has made many friends in the activity. It was a privilege to be able to celebrate such a milestone with Betty and to be able to acknowledge what an important member of our club that she is. It was also lovely to welcome our visitors who come along to help us celebrate.

Happy 90th Birthday Betty.

STEPPING OUT WITH CLOGGING

Well, that was the weekend that was, and a very enjoyable and successful one it was, too, as Gosford

welcomed Cloggers from all over Australia and New Zealand, plus our Guest Cuer, Sherry Glass-

Cox from the U.S. of A, and her extremely talented and entertaining 12-year old son, Gavin, to the

20th ACA National Clogging Convention.

Sincere thanks to the organising Committee and their oh-so-busy helpers for their tireless work

which made the weekend click along effortlessly.

The Cuers who revved everyone up during the dance sessions and conducted the workshops did an

outstanding job.

Our congratulations to New South Wales on winning the Showcase with their dance ‘Almost Satur-

day Night’ choreographed By Ruth Krix.

Our own Amanda Lim was victorious in the ACA Choreography Competition with her dance ‘Oh!

Cecilia’, which she taught at the Convention. Well done, Amanda, we are very proud of you.

Next year’s National Clogging Convention (number 21) will be held in Perth from the 30th Septem-

ber to the 2nd October. Registration forms are already starting to arrive in the organising Commit-

tee’s mail box.

Now back to reality and fun times at ‘home’ with such happenings as the Fun Dance Clogging Day

at the Gordon Park Scouts Hall, Cnr. Bradshaw Street and Lamington Avenue, Lutwyche (home of

Double Jingle Cloggers), 10.00am – 4.00pm on 7th November: bring a plate of food to share. Come

along and dance to your favourite golden oldies of bygone years. All Cloggers are welcome to take

to the floor for what will be a great day of dancing.

Exciting news! A Clogging session will be part of the 35th Queensland State Square Dance Conven-

tion at Caboolture Showgrounds, Beerburrum Road, on Saturday morning, 26th September, 10.00am

– 12.00pm.

The travel bug continues to bite quite a number of our dancers across the State, and as they journey

off we wish them a safe and happy adventure, and we look forward to seeing you back dancing with

us at journey’s end.

A smile is a sign of joy,

A hug is a sign of love,

A laugh is a sign of happiness,

And being a Clogger ???

That’s just a sign of good taste!

Love and best wishes to all,

Frances

HERVEY BAY SQUARE DANCE CLUB Hi from Hervey Bay, Mixed feelings this month for us. Happy that Matthew Mills came down from Bundaberg and gave us a great "bling" night. Everyone there enjoyed the dancing and friendship and our newer mem-bers were well catered for. I believe they learnt more new moves which made them very hap-py. Thank you to all the visitors. You helped to make an enjoyable night. On a sad note, we have to report the passing of one of our stalwarts and life members, Norm Dowling. Norm started his dancing in Victoria and then belonged to Starlight Squares before com-ing over to Hervey Bay club. He danced up to level A2 (mostly in Bundaberg) but was always there to support our club every Monday night for Plus and Wednesday Mainstream night. In the latter months, he wasn't able to dance but came to the Plus night and looked after the program. We will miss him greatly as will his partner, Daphne Boyle. Next big event on our calendar is the State Convention. Eleven have packed their bags and our club is closed for the Saturday learners class and Monday Plus. On Saturday 3rd October we will be going to Maryborough to dance to Elaine Davis and then later in the month, Gary's Shindig on the Mountain in Gympie so we have no time for a caller in Hervey Bay until Alan Evans comes in early November. More news in the next edition. Our Trip. On 15th August one well-seasoned traveller and one intrepid traveller set out for a month of sight-seeing and square dancing in Europe. Arriving in Dusseldorf after a plane delay of 16 hours and a suitcase on the following flight, the fun started. We danced with Square Wheelers that night and then off to Cologne, then Salzberg for the Wolfgang Mozart dance at Henndorf am Wallersee just north of Salzberg. Beautiful spot in the Austrian rolling hills just like scenes from Sound of Music. Met some very friendly people including Martina and Alfred. Some may remember Martina who traveled extensively in Australia a few years ago. She wished to be remembered to all. We also met a great caller, Walter Stupnig. There we were invited to go to Munich to Walter's 20 years of calling surprise celebration one and a half hours by car away. Imagine his surprise when he thought it was a usual club night, he walked into a packed hall with 2 Aussies he had just met only 3 days before. It turned into a great night for us all. Then off to Vienna on the beautiful blue Danube river then Ruedesheim where we cruised the most beautiful part of the River Rhine. Packed bags again for the 60 years European Assn of American Square Dancing Clubs, in Gelsenkirchen, north of Dusseldorf in Germany. Three days and nights of dancing, Friday afternoon and night, Saturday all day and night plus after-party and Sunday all day. We danced between Mainstream and Plus but we could have danced up to C4. On the Sunday afternoon everyone gathered in the Mainstream hall for a farewell dance where they acknowledged those who had traveled. Of course we jumped up, waved and cheered when they mentioned Australia. It was a great dance experience. Before traveling home, we diverted to Maastricht in Holland to see Andre Reiu's home town and, he is right, it is one of the most beautiful cities but, unfortunately, all good things come to an end and we had to leave this lovely part of the world, return to Dusseldorf and fly home. Four weeks of hotels, trains, trams, buses and planes but well worth the experience. I would like to thank Samantha for 'taking' me along. She really has more energy than most and not afraid to 'practice' her dutch /german /a ustrian language( all three rolled into one sometimes). W e had a lot of laughs. Bye for now, Glenda.

2016 Caller / Cuer Conference Calling Queensland Callers, Trainees and would like to be Callers.

Did you know that the Australian Callers Federation (ACF) is hosting a Caller Cuer Confer-ence prior to the National Convention? Paul Bristow (UK), Ken Ritucci (USA) and Steve Turner (Australia) will be featured presenters.

Qld. Square Dance Society is offering subsidies to callers/cuers who are the listed as Call-er/Cuer for Society Affiliated clubs e.g. those that are listed on the club's affiliation form are eligible to receive $ 50.00 for full time callers and $ 30.00 for Trainee callers. Application forms are available from the Square Dancing Society, the QCA, or from the conference website: http://acfcallercuerconference2016.weebly.com To apply for this subsidy the caller is asked to forward to Society Secretary their receipt for payment to register to attend the Caller Conference. The Secretary will then for-ward a letter either advising of the acceptance or otherwise. If accepted then the letter will state required details e.g. their bank account so that the Treasurer can transfer the money. Be part of the National and attend the Conference to learn from some of the best Callers. David Pearce. Publicity officer.
