It’s that time of year again! New Brunswick Tomorrow (NBT) hosted the
first Ciclovia of the year on Saturday, April 23. From 11 am to 4 pm,
hundreds of New Brunswick residents took to the streets to walk, ride
bikes, and play. Originating in Bogotá, Colombia, Ciclovias have

people are encouraged to get up and get moving. Since 2013, the New
Brunswick Ciclovia has had thousands of residents come out and

New Brunswick’s ‘MarchSnackness’ Gives Healthy Snacks aCompetitive EdgeApril 3, 2017
“As the NCAA tournament (March Madness) began last year, I
thought to myself, how can I tie this awesome event into our PE/Health
curriculum in 2017?” That was the question educator Steven Louka
wanted to answer to help his students find a creative way to eat
healthy foods and exercise. As the supervisor of the physical
education, health, and wellness department for New Brunswick
schools, Louka began to share his tournamentstyle competition with
others and received positive feedback and encouragement to move
forward with the program. “The premise of this competition is to get our
students to realize how easy and fun eating healthy can be. There’s a
wide variety of healthy and affordable snack options,” Louka said.
Louka worked with FoodCorps service member Hayley Klein to develop

Soccer Academy A Win-Win forChildren and New BrunswickCommunityFebruary 20, 2016
Youth Coach Captain Mike Bobadilla doesn’t hold back in expressing
his passion about the Soccer Academy he leads in New Brunswick.
Back in 2000, a friend asked him to assist him with a summer youth
soccer team and, since that time, it’s been a major part of his DNA.
The program started with 30 kids a few times a week in Archibald Park.
By the end of the season, the program had grown to nearly 100 kids.
Unfortunately, due to lack of funding and resources, the program was
discontinued. “In the back of my mind, I knew how vital the program
had been in keeping kids off the street and decided to create a
summer academy in 2008,” said Captain Bobadilla, who worked on the
local police department’s night shift. Called the Bobadilla Soccer
Academy, 125 kids were initially recruited for a sixweek summer

New Brunswick TomorrowWelcomes New Director ofCommunity Health
November 10, 2015
This summer 17 New Brunswick children had fun and learned valuable
swim skills through the Raritan Valley YMCA. The oneweek Healthy
Kids Camp for children ages five to 12 taught healthy eating and
physical activity concepts through various fun activities. Campers
enjoyed daily swim lessons, nutrition and cooking classes, creative
arts and lots of physical activity, gardening, first aid and water safety.
The free program addressed a major need for New Brunswick children:
increasing access to recreational facilities and programs that
contribute to healthy lifestyles. The campers were referred by various
social services agencies in the city and were transported to the YMCA.
“Without the provision of these services most would not have access
due to a lack of financial resources and transportation,” said Gina
Stravic, executive director of the Raritan Valley YMCA. The YMCA has
been a local and national leader in aquatics and camping for over 100

Meet Jaymie Santiago, ProjectManager, NJPHK-New BrunswickNovember 11, 2014
Jaymie Santiago lives in New Brunswick, works in New Brunswick, and
says New Brunswick is a big part of who he is. He has been working
with and for New Brunswick’s communities and their residents for the
past 12 years. Santiago has a Master of Public Affairs and Policy from
Rutgers. He was drawn to issues of food security while working with NJ
SNAPEd (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program). “Being young
and enthusiastic and wanting to teach, I landed in the field of nutrition
education, facilitating classes to underserved populations,” he says.
“When I learned the stories of why a person eats unhealthily or
overeats, I saw the need went beyond nutrition education. For some, it
was about the inability to afford healthy food, while others experienced
issues around obesity and overeating because it was their way of
coping with domestic violence at home. So, there’s a theme of
