As it has been since the program began, of all 70 Bergen County communities, Lyndhurst is once again in the top ten for recycling grant allocations Lyndhurst has been awarded $139,609.11 from the Resource Recovery Tax Investment Fund for the Municipal Recycling Assis- tance. The program, administered by the Bergen County Utilities Authority has distributed millions of dollars in grant funds since it’s inception in 1990. The money comes from tipping fees paid to the BCUA by the garbage haulers. All the grant fund money goes right back into community recycling programs. " These grant funds are given for the expansion and implementation of recycling and source reduction programs,” said Bergen County Freeholder Vice Chairman An- thony J. Cassano. “ The funds are being distributed to the municipali- ties for use during the 1997 calen- dar year.” The amount each town is awarded is determined by factors including the tonnage recycled by the municipality, and its’ popula- tion, said Lyndhurst Recycling Coordinator, Vincent Rosa, who added that in 1995 Lyndhurst re- cycled 33,000 tons. Rosa said the township uses the grant money for things like trucks and equipment, and a percentage of the grant is earmarked for pro- grams that encourage' residents to be more ecologically-minded. One such source reduction pro- gram already in place in North Ar- lington is the Cut it and Leave it Program, designed to urge residents to allow grass clippings to remain on the lavui by either cutting their lawn more frequently or using a mulching mower As an incentive lo participate in the fiscally and environmentally responsible program. 16 mulching mowers are being rattled off to residents ofthe borough. Money for the Cut it and Leave it Program came from the $74,521.45 North Arlington received from the BCUA recycling grant .. Allocations to neighboring com- munities include $92,932.5) to Carlstadt, $145,914 26 to Fast Ru- therford, and $113,632.89 to Ru- therford. Kevin Carroll makes Eagle rank Bv Joi.vn G arner Wayne Brown & Kevin Carroll Lyndhurst resident Kevin Carroll has achieved what few young men do The 18 year old recently earned the rank of Eagle Scout, a feat at- tained by less than 3% of all Boy Scouts. To fulfill this highest advance- ment in scouting, Carroll, a mem- ber of Boy Scout Troop 86, had to fulfill specific requirements in the areas of leadership, service and outdoor skills. His community service in July was close to home. Carroll chose to clean up and landscape the Little Red Schoolhouse Carroll’s scrapbook must be overflowing He reportedly re- ceived commendations from Presi- dent Clinton, Vice President Gore, Senator Torricelli and from more than 40 governors. Kevin, who is employed by Su- perior Press in Belleville, is the son of Charles and Barbara Carroll. T H E P E R F E C T T R A P: A friendsays her 72-year-old uncle and his 60 ish -year o ld wife m oved to a retirem ent community in the south and now. a year later, they feel they 're trapped in a luxurious n ightmare

As my friend notes: Everything is perfect. Just as they were told it would be when they were first introduced to the community. The pair had said for years they wanted out o f Chicago’s cold winters and into a place where the grass is green all year (and someone else mows it). Now they have that perfectly m anicured lawn to look at i2 months a year. They wanted security. Well, actually, what they wanted were safe streets. Now they have no streets to speak of; just ribbons of asphalt separated by wide swaths o f green.

In short, the community has e v e ry thing promised in the brochure. So. there arc no complaints on that score What these two are unhappy about is what the comm unity doesn 't have. They say there is so much ‘‘sam eness’’ everyw here Nothing changes. Seasons d o n ’t change. T he view doesn’t change. People don’t change. There a ren 't enough political differences am ong the population to m ake life interesting. And, there are no young people except for those who . visit "the old folks." For a couple whose lives were continually on the edge o f change, they feel now they’re caught in molasses; it’s sweet, but it traps you in place.

This is no isolated case o f urbanites finding how true it is to be wary o f what you wish for, because you may get it.

I’d appreciate hearing from people who m ade the move into retirem ent com m unities and how they adjusted to their new lives.

A B IG G E R H E A D A C H E : I f your docto r has p rescribed daily doses o f aspirin for cardiovascular problem s, be careful about how m uch alcohol you drink. The Journal o f the Am erican M edical Association a few;' years ago reported on a study showing that people who take aspirin aft|t then drink alcohol may find they 're drunker than they expected to be. Aspirin appears to affect an enzyme that prevents alcohol absorption, allow ing m ore alcohol lo enter the bloodstream . Women, who already have lower levels o f this enzyme even without drinking, are aOactefi even m ore dramatically if they take aspirins and drink.

Chances are, you’ve read this newspaper before!
