– ¡Selena! ¿Por qué tienes la falda en la cabeza?–le gritó la maestra cuando entró al salón declases–. ¡Qué horror! Voy a llamar a tus papás.

Después de clases, Selena regresó a su casa. Cuandoabrió la puerta, vio que su papá estaba en el sofá, to-cando la guitarra. Su papá no la vio. Selena sabía que supapá iba a estar furioso después de hablar con su maes-tra. Caminaba silenciosamente cuando, de repente, es-cuchó: «¿Selena? ¿Eres tú? Necesitamos hablar».

Nerviosa, la niña caminó hacia el sofá.

– ¿Sí, papá? –le preguntó Selena.

– Selena, tu maestra nos llamó por teléfono. Nosdijo que... ¡tenías la falda en la cabeza! Porfavor, explícame qué pasó –le dijo su papáenojado.

– Una de mis amigas me retó1 –respondió Se-lena. –Me dijo: «Te reto a que te levantes lafalda... o, ¿tienes miedo?».

– Selena, necesitas entender que no puedeshacer locuras solo porque una persona te retea hacerlas –le explicó su papá.

– Lo sé, lo sé. Pero, no te enojes –le respondió laniña–. Papi, toca una canción para mí.

Selena sabía que la música calmaría a su papá. Éltocó We Belong Together de Richie Valens. Selena estabafeliz.

– Esta es una de las canciones que tocaba conmi grupo, Los Dinos –dijo su papá más cal-mado. Entonces, su papá comenzó a cantarotra vez:

You’re mine, and we belong together.Yes we belong together, for eternity.

En ese momento, Selena comenzó a cantar con supapá:

Su papá se sorprendió mucho cuando escuchó can-tar a Selena. «¡Mi hija canta muy bonito!», pensó. Esedía de los años 70, después de escuchar cantar a su hija,a Abraham se le ocurrió una idea: ¡Formar un grupo mu-sical con sus hijos! Sería un grupo familiar.

Pocos días después, el papá de Selena llegó a su casacon varios instrumentos musicales. Tenía una guitarra

eléctrica, una batería y un micrófono. La mamá de Se-lena los vio y le dijo:

– Abraham, ¿por qué tienes todos esos instru-mentos?

– Porque tengo una gran idea –le respondió–.¡Vamos a formar un grupo musical con losniños! Selena canta muy bien. ¿No lo ves?Nuestros hijos van a ser muy famosos.

– Abraham, no tenemos dinero para instrumen-tos. Además, tenemos que trabajar. ¡No tene-mos tiempo para grupos musicales! –dijo lamamá de Selena un poco frustrada.

– Todo va a estar bien. ¡Tengo el plan perfecto!–respondió el papá de Selena–. ¡Niiiiños! –losllamó su papá.

Los tres niños, Selena, A.B. y Suzy, fueron a hablarcon su papá. Cuando entraron, miraron los instrumentoscon curiosidad. A.B. le preguntó a su papá:

– ¿Y esos instrumentos?

– Son para ustedes –respondió su papá–. Vamosa formar un grupo musical. Tú vas a tocar laguitarra, Selena va a cantar…

– ¿Y yo? –preguntó Suzy con curiosidad.

– Tú vas a tocar la batería –le respondió su papá.

– ¿La batería? Las niñas no tocan la batería. ¡Yono quiero tocar la batería! –dijo Suzy enojada.

– Suzette –dijo Abraham–, no tienes otra opción.¡Tú vas a tocar la batería!

Todos los días, por varias horas, Selena, A.B. y Suzypracticaban Rock ‘n’ Roll de los años 50. También prac-ticaban música religiosa porque la religión era muy im-portante para la familia.

Al principio, a los niños no les gustaba practicar.Ellos querían jugar con sus amigos:

– ¡Papá, quiero jugar con mis amigos! –dijo Suzyfrustrada.

– Suzette, si quieren ser un grupo famoso necesi-tan practicar todos los días. Necesitan practicarpor muchas horas –le respondió su papá.

– Pero papá, ¡las niñas no tocan la batería! –dijoSuzy frustrada.

– Suzy, ¿y por qué no? Es obvio que las niñaspueden tocar todo tipo de instrumentos –ledijo Selena.

Con el tiempo, Abraham encontró varios lugaresdonde sus hijos podían cantar y ganar dinero. Las perso-nas admiraban a los niños. Y a ellos les gustaban mucholos aplausos. Los aplausos motivaban a los niños a prac-ticar más. Ellos decidieron que practicar era importante,aunque su madre todavía estaba preocupada por el fu-turo del grupo y de sus hijos.

– ¡Doscientos dólares! –dijo Selena emocionadacuando su papá entró al coche con el dinero.

– Sí, mija. Tocar en esta feria fue una buena idea–respondió el papá de Selena.

La mamá de Selena no estaba tan contenta como elresto de la familia. Ella estaba preocupada por su situa-ción económica. La familia pasaba mucho tiempo to-cando en eventos privados, restaurantes y en pequeñosclubes, pero no ganaba suficiente dinero. Ella estaba es-pecialmente preocupada porque a su esposo le intere-saba más la música que su trabajo en la fábrica.

La familia continuó tocando en diferentes restauran-tes y clubes, pero no ganaba mucho dinero. Finalmente,en el verano de 1980, Abraham decidió hablar con suesposa. Él tenía la idea perfecta para ganar más dineropara su familia.

– Marcela, tú sabes que a los tejanos les gustamucho la comida mexicana, ¿o no? –le pre-guntó Abraham.

– Sí, lo sé. ¿Por qué lo dices? –le respondió Mar-cela con curiosidad.

– Estaba pensando que los niños necesitan unlugar donde puedan tocar todos los días. Ade-más, esta comunidad necesita un restaurantemexicano. ¿Qué piensas si nosotros abrimosuno? –dijo Abraham.

– Realmente no me gusta esa idea –respondióMarcela–. Un restaurante es mucho trabajo,tiempo y dinero. Nosotros no tenemos eltiempo ni el dinero. Tú tienes un buen trabajo,no necesitas un restaurante.

– Marcela, te prometo que voy a continuar conmi trabajo en la fábrica. Tú preparas comidasdeliciosas. Puedes trabajar como chef en elrestaurante y nuestros amigos pueden servir lasmesas. Un restaurante es el sitio perfecto paraque los niños puedan tocar sin tener que visitarotros sitios –le respondió Abraham.

– No lo sé –dijo Marcela nerviosa.

– Te prometo que todo va a estar bien –le dijoAbraham entusiasmado.

Poco después, la familia Quintanilla abrió un restau-rante mexicano. El restaurante se llamaba Papagayos.Muchas personas de la comunidad estaban contentasporque les gustaba mucho la comida mexicana. Al prin-cipio, las personas solo visitaban el restaurante por la co-mida. Con el tiempo, las personas también lo visitabanporque querían escuchar a Selena y a sus hermanos.

Una noche, Primo Ledesma, un presentador deradio, fue a Papagayos. Él escuchó a Selena y a sus her-manos. El hombre estaba muy impresionado con la vozde la niña y decidió invitarlos a su programa de radio.

Días después, Selena cantó en el programa de radiode Primo Ledesma. A todos les gustó mucho la voz de laniña. Varias personas querían contratarla. Una persona¡le ofreció $2,000 por un concierto! Cantar en la radiofue una gran oportunidad para los Quintanilla. La familiade Selena estaba muy contenta, pero no estuvo contentapor mucho tiempo.

Entre 1980 y 1982, Estados Unidos vivió una granrecesión económica y, por eso, muchas personas ya nocomían en restaurantes. Los Quintanilla no pudieron es-capar ese gran desastre económico.

La familia tenía graves problemas económicos y tuvoque abandonar el restaurante, su casa y su comunidad.Decidieron vivir con un hermano del padre de Selena enEl Campo, Texas.

El papá de Selena sabía que este era otro reto, perotambién sabía que la música era la solución. Decidió quetenían que practicar más, promocionar al grupo y traba-jar muy duro. También decidió que el grupo necesitabaun nombre. Lo llamó ‘Selena y los Dinos’. Los Quintani-lla no les tenían miedo a los retos. Sabían que su futuroiba a ser brillante.
