preSident’S CoLumn

September is here!

The biggest events of the year, Field Day, Cornhusker State Games, and the Lancaster County Super Fair are all behind us. Though our club is large, these events require a herculean effort from many of our members. Please accept my hearty “well done” to each of you who

participated to make all of these happen again this year.

A local Ham checked into the nightly ARES net and asked a question: “What I want to know is what the next event is for the ARRL?” He was referring to the National Parks on the Air event ending in December and what the ARRL might follow this event with.

I related that, toward the end of the ARRL Centennial in 2014, I had a conversation with N3KN, Kay Craigie, then president of the ARRL, asking her what the ARRL had planned for the following year. Kay responded, “Aren’t you glad you were around to be able to participate in the centennial event?”

Of course I was! It was a fantastic event. The message here is clear: Don’t wait for what might be coming. Participate and enjoy the events we currently have before it is too late. You will likely look back and wish you had participated.

The same thoughts ring true for the club. Don’t wait! Get involved, if even in a small way to start. Don’t become one of those who wait for the next big event only to miss out on all the greatness that exists now.

At the last Board meeting, we decided to form a group of volunteer mentors to proactively interact with new Amateurs. If you would like to join this team, please contact me or any LARC Board member.

As of the writing of this article, August is almost over and that means the end of summer and our public service season. Well, not quite so! Don't be puttin' those radios away quite yet!

Thanks to all who helped with the Lancaster County Fair and the Mud Run. Your participation was greatly appreciated. Thanks to all who helped with the MLT-Triathlon and the annual Heat Stroke 100! It is your talents and efforts to help these organizations that make this club so GREAT a club!

September 18 is the annual Y-Triathlon at Branched Oak Lake, which is a fundraiser for the Lincoln YMCA. Please, if you have the time, sign up and help out.

We have been asked by the Bellevue Amateur Radio Club to help out with the Bike MS: Nebraska Ride 2016 from Springfield, Nebraska to Lincoln. The purpose of this bike ride is to help raise funds in the fight against multiple sclerosis.

There are four routes: the 25 mile route, which we will not be responsible for, as well as the 50, 60, and 100 mile routes, which we may be helping with. This means a lot of Hams are needed in order to safely get these bicyclists to Lincoln. If you are compelled to be charitable for this cause, I hope you will sign up and help!

The event is scheduled for Saturday, September 24, with a return trip to Springfield on the 25th. We will not be involved with the return trip because they leave early in the morning. These participants will be staying overnight at Haymarket Park, so I hope you will consider helping out with this worthy cause! Visit bit.ly/BikeMSNE for information.

Finally, don't forget October, which has the annual EYE RUN on October 2, Market to Market Relay Race on the 8th, and Crop Walk on the 9th. Sign-up sheets will be at the meeting and I can answer questions concerning all upcoming events.

Thanks so much for giving your time toward these public service events.

—Mike Long, KØSHC Public Service Chair

LanCaSter County Super Fair

For the first time, the fair net control Station, KØKKV, could be heard throughout the area, thanks to the telescoping mast loaned by Larry Frisch, KDØRTK!

The first day of the fair, Thursday, August 4, was exciting. Our net started at 8:00 in order to help commercial vendors get moved in

and then assist visitors. Everything was going smoothly until late afternoon, and then came the rain, lightning, and the threat of hail. By 18:00, the fairgrounds were a soggy mess and the rides dangerous, due to lightning.

Inside our command post, Lancaster Event Center Director, Amy Dickerson, stood next to our net control operators, Ron Mayhew, KEØBHQ, and Connie Zehr, NØGMA, and made the decision to close and cancel all outside activities based on information provided by the net’s weather observer, Mike Wasserstein, KBØDNP, and others.

The second Thursday of the fair, August 11, was an absolute repeat of the above with Connie, NØGMA, on net control and Mark Hoskins from the EOC joining the other key players in the command post.

This year, 52 folks helped make the fair a great success! They logged 1,388 hours of public service and drove 4,100 miles commuting.

Throughout 2016, Amateur Radio will be helping the National Park Service celebrate

its 100th anniversary. Hams from across the country will activate NPS units, promote the National Park Service, and showcase Amateur Radio to the public. There are 479 locations recognized by the ARRL as being eligible for the NPOTA contest, ranging from national parks, national historic sites, national monuments, recreational or wild and scenic rivers, national preserves, historic trails, national seashores, national recreational areas, and affiliated areas. The September issue of QST magazine states that over a half million QSOs have been made so far in 2016.

There are several local Hams participating in the contest, both as activators and as chasers. Three of our local Hams made a road trip in August to activate five different parks. John Mardock, KRØP, Dale Douglas, KDØWVD, and Mike Arter, NØTTE, traveled to locations in Kansas and Colorado to set up and work portable from these locations

so other Hams could contact them as chasers and get credit for “working the park.”

This presentation will talk about the adventures of the 1,350 mile road trip to the following locations:

Nicodemus National Historic Site, Nicodemus, KS Bent’s Old Fort National Historic Site, La Junta, CO Sand Creek Massacre National Historic Site, Eads, CO Fort Larned National Historic Site, Larned, KS Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve, Strong City, KS

We will look at the NPOTA contest in general, the five specific locations and their significance, and the fun and challenges encountered along the way. Over 675 contacts were made during those activations, mostly on 20m, with some on 2m, 40m, and 80m.

Our nightly nets have a couple changes:

Currently filling the Saturday night slot is Mike Wasserstein, KBØDNP, and starting August 31, Jared Polack, KDØAFY, will be the temporary net controller on Wednesday nets while Dale Douglas, KDØWVD, has back surgery and during his recovery.

Jared is from Omaha, has been a Ham for 10 years, and is in Lincoln attending UNL. He hopes to get more involved in our club. Please welcome him on Wednesday nets and if you see him at club meetings.

heLp needed - September 10The following request is forwarded by Dan Witulski of Beatrice who received it from Mary Joseph with the Ak-Sar-Ben Amatateur Radio Club. The Ak-Sar-Ben club was asked to assist with a Scout camporee but is unable due to the date. Dan is willing to help but needs some assistance.

I am a park guide at Homestead National Monument in Beatrice, and I am helping Susan Cook coordinate a Boy Scout camporee that we have coming up on September 10. We are expecting about 300 Boy Scouts to attend this event, and we will be splitting them up into groups of 25-30 and rotating them through different activities throughout the day. While they are here they will have the opportunity to earn several badges. I need to verify whether someone from the Ak-Sar-Ben ARC will be available that day. We will be having rotations from 8:30 until 17:00, and each group will move to a new activity every hour at 9:30, 10:30, etc. with a break for lunch. We are also looking for some activities for the boys to do from 18:30 until 22:00, so if you could stay for any of the evening, that would be great too!

Thanks so much for your time! Jennifer Shaughney Park Guide, Homestead National Monument of America 8253 W. State Highway 4 Beatrice, NE 68310 402-223-3514

LadieS oF LarCWhether you are a member, spouse, interested in the hobby or not, this activity is for you.

The Ladies of LARC will meet for brunch on Saturday, September 24, 2016 at 8:00 at the Egg and I, located at 70th and A.

Please note the time change from the August LOG. The Egg and I is unable to take us at the later time.

We will talk about what we want to talk about and stay as long as we'd like. Please RSVP to Wendy Mayhew at [email protected].

I look forward to gathering together!

—Wendy Mayhew, KEØCJD

The LARC DX-packet cluster is now KØKKV after over 20 years as KØGND. When the DX cluster was first acquired by the club, it could not have been assigned KØKKV, as that call

was associated with an extensive packet-radio network serving a wide area.

Sorry to note that Bob Katz, KI6JOJ, has moved to Moreno Valley, CA.

Some great photos were exhibited at the Lancaster County Fair by Carla, KCØDFR, Marla, KDØHYW, and Joleen Dawson, as well as Joe Eisenberg, KØNEB.

Did you know that we have a silver medalist in the club? Ron Mayhew won the medal during the State Games of America last year in fishing.

Great video on Luke Dorris’ Channel 8 weathercast August 16 of quarter-size hail in Bennet from Eldon Schroder, KDØDEU.

The National Parks on the Air (NPOTA)

chasers were out this month. Making lots of QSOs in the Colorado area were John Mardock, KRØP, Mike Arter, NØTTE, and Dale Douglas, KDØWVD.

Malcolm Heard, KEØJBT, completed a successful mobile installation.

Cody Meredith, NØWPA, drove his modified golf cart limousine, helping with the Mud Run.

Nicole Gibbons, KCØDVH, has moved to Douglas, NE and Tom Lantis, Sr, KDØHYZ, has moved to Firth.

See you at the club meeting.
