We continue to CONNECT and GROW through reflection on what it means to be a Christian servant.

As God’s baptized children we experience the new FREEDOM we have in Christ to love and serve all of God’s children and all of God’s creation.

Empowered by the Risen Christ, we are SENT into the world to baptize and teach in Christ’s name and with Christ’s presence.

GO MAKES DISCIPLES…THE GREAT COMMISSIONA THEME FOR RLC YEAR OF “GO”

MATTHEW 28:18-20

And Jesus came and said to them, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age."

GO… And I Am With YouUntil the End

(Matthew 28:20)

“The command to GO in the name of God is an awesome and risky business.

It is more about the ones we serve than it is about us. And there are often no clear rules or guides.

God’s promise is that we GO always with our resurrected Lord alongside to strengthen, comfort, and guide us in our mission.

Page 8: S ESSION 4: GO… A ND I A M W ITH Y OU TO THE E ND (M ATTHEW 28:20)

Seek the LORD while he may be found, call upon him while he is near; 7 let the wicked forsake their way, and the unrighteous their thoughts; let them return to the LORD, that he may have mercy on them, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. 8 For my thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways my ways, says the LORD. 9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. 10 For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return there until they have watered the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater, 11 so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and succeed in the thing for which I sent it. (Isaiah 55:6-11)

GOD’S PROMISE OF LIFE…

Page 9: S ESSION 4: GO… A ND I A M W ITH Y OU TO THE E ND (M ATTHEW 28:20)

Now when Jesus had finished instructing his twelve disciples, he went on from there to teach and proclaim his message in their cities. 2 When John heard in prison what the Messiah was doing, he sent word by his disciples 3 and said to him, "Are you the one who is to come, or are we to wait for another?" 4 Jesus answered them, "Go and tell John what you hear and see: 5 the blind receive their sight, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the poor have good news brought to them. 6 And blessed is anyone who takes no offense at me." (Matthew 11:1-6)

LIVING WITH THE QUESTIONS…

Page 10: S ESSION 4: GO… A ND I A M W ITH Y OU TO THE E ND (M ATTHEW 28:20)

TRUSTING THE PROMISEAt that time Jesus said, "I thank you, Father, Lord of

heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and the intelligent and have revealed them to infants; 26 yes, Father, for such was your gracious will. 27 All things have been handed over to me by my Father; and no one knows the Son except the Father, and no one knows the Father except the Son and anyone to whom the Son chooses to reveal him. 28 "Come to me, all you that are weary and are carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 Formy yoke is easy, and my burden is light.“(Matthew 11:25-30)

Page 11: S ESSION 4: GO… A ND I A M W ITH Y OU TO THE E ND (M ATTHEW 28:20)

But blessed are your eyes, for they see, and your ears, for they hear. 17 Truly I tell you, many prophets and righteous people longed to see what you see, but did not see it, and to hear what you hear, but did not hear it. (Matthew 13:16-17)

HEARING GOD’S BLESSING

RISKY BUSINESS… LIVING WITH WEEDSThen he left the crowds and went into the house.

And his disciples approached him, saying, "Explain to us the parable of the weeds of the field." 37 He answered, "The one who sows the good seed is the Son of Man; 38 the field is the world, and the good seed are the children of the kingdom; the weeds are the children of the evil one, 39 and the enemy who sowed them is the devil; the harvest is the end of the age, and the reapers are angels. 40 Just as the weeds are collected and burned up with fire, so will it be at the end of the age. 41 The Son of Man will send his angels, and they will collect out of his kingdom all causes of sin and all evildoers, 42 and they will throw them into the furnace of fire, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. 43 Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. Let anyone with ears listen!

44 "The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which someone found and hid; then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field. 45 "Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a merchant in search of fine pearls; 46 on finding one pearl of great value, he went and sold all that he had and bought it. (Matthew 13:36-46)

OPEN TO SURPRISE

Page 14: S ESSION 4: GO… A ND I A M W ITH Y OU TO THE E ND (M ATTHEW 28:20)

RIDING OUT THE STORMSImmediately he made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead to the other side, while he dismissed the crowds. 23 And after he had dismissed the crowds, he went up the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone, 24 but by this time the boat, battered by the waves, was far from the land, for the wind was against them. 25 And early in the morning he came walking toward them on the sea. 26 But when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified, saying, "It is a ghost!" And they cried out in fear. 27 But immediately Jesus spoke to them and said, "Take heart, it is I; do not be afraid."

Page 15: S ESSION 4: GO… A ND I A M W ITH Y OU TO THE E ND (M ATTHEW 28:20)

28 Peter answered him, "Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water." 29 He said, "Come." So Peter got out of the boat, started walking on the water, and came toward Jesus. 30 But when he noticed the strong wind, he became frightened, and beginning to sink, he cried out, "Lord, save me!" 31 Jesus immediately reached out his hand and caught him, saying to him, "You of little faith, why did you doubt?" 32 When they got into the boat, the wind ceased. 33 And those in the boat worshiped him, saying, "Truly you are the Son of God." (Matthew 14:22-33)

Now when Jesus heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew to Galilee. 13 He left Nazareth and made his home in Capernaum by the sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali, 14 so that what had been spoken through the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled: 15 "Land of Zebulun, land of Naphtali, on the road by the sea, across the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles-- 16 the people who sat in darkness have seen a great light, and for those who sat in the region and shadow of death light has dawned." 17 From that time Jesus began to proclaim, "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near." 18 As he walked by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon, who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea-- for they were fishermen. 19 And he said to them, "Follow me, and I will make you fish for people." (Matthew 4:12-19)

BROADENING HORIZONS FOR MISSION

Page 17: S ESSION 4: GO… A ND I A M W ITH Y OU TO THE E ND (M ATTHEW 28:20)

Jesus left that place and went away to the district of Tyre and Sidon. 22 Just then a Canaanite woman from that region came out and started shouting, "Have mercy on me, Lord, Son of David; my daughter is tormented by a demon." 23 But he did not answer her at all. And his disciples came and urged him, saying, "Send her away, for she keeps shouting after us." 24 He answered, "I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel." 25 But she came and knelt before him, saying, "Lord, help me." 26 He answered, "It is not fair to take the children's food and throw it to the dogs." 27 She said, "Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters' table." 28 Then Jesus answered her, "Woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish." And her daughter was healed instantly. (Matthew 15:21-28)

Page 18: S ESSION 4: GO… A ND I A M W ITH Y OU TO THE E ND (M ATTHEW 28:20)

I appeal to you therefore, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.

TRANSFORMED DISCIPLES

2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your minds, so that you may discern what is the will of God-- what is good and acceptable and perfect. (Romans 12:1-2)

Page 19: S ESSION 4: GO… A ND I A M W ITH Y OU TO THE E ND (M ATTHEW 28:20)

Owe no one anything, except to love one another; for the one who loves another has fulfilled the law. 9 The commandments, "You shall not commit adultery; You shall not murder; You shall not steal; You shall not covet"; and any other commandment, are summed up in this word, "Love your neighbor as yourself." 10 Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore, love is the fulfilling of the law. (Romans 13:8-10)

THE DEBT OF LOVE

Page 20: S ESSION 4: GO… A ND I A M W ITH Y OU TO THE E ND (M ATTHEW 28:20)

20 For in him every one of God's promises is a "Yes." For this reason it is through him that we say the "Amen," to the glory of God. 21 But it is God who establishes us with you in Christ and has anointed us, 22 by putting his seal on us and giving us his Spirit in our hearts as a first installment. (2 Corinthians 1:20-22)

LIVING WITH GOD’S “YES”

Page 21: S ESSION 4: GO… A ND I A M W ITH Y OU TO THE E ND (M ATTHEW 28:20)

So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new! 18 All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ, and has given us the ministry of reconciliation; 19 that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting the message of reconciliation to us. 20 So we are ambassadors for Christ, since God is making his appeal throughus; we entreat you on behalf of Christ,be reconciled to God. 21 For our sake hemade him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. (2 Corinthians 5:17-21)

A NEW CREATION:

Page 22: S ESSION 4: GO… A ND I A M W ITH Y OU TO THE E ND (M ATTHEW 28:20)

As we work together with him, we urge you also not to accept the grace of God in vain. 2 For he says, "At an acceptable time I have listened to you, and on a day of salvation I have helped you." See, now is the acceptable time; see, now is the day of salvation! (2 Corinthians 6:1-2)

NOW IS THE DAY OF SALVATION

Page 23: S ESSION 4: GO… A ND I A M W ITH Y OU TO THE E ND (M ATTHEW 28:20)

I give thanks to my God always for you because of the grace of God that has been given you in Christ Jesus, 5 for in every way you have been enriched in him, in speech and knowledge of every kind-- 6 just as the testimony of Christ has been strengthened among you-- 7 so that you are not lacking in any spiritual gift as you wait for the revealing of our Lord Jesus Christ. 8 He will also strengthen you to the end, so that you may be blameless on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 God is faithful; by him you were called into the fellowship of his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord. (1 Corinthians 1:4-9)

“I AM WITH YOU: THE SPIRIT’S PRESENCE

Page 24: S ESSION 4: GO… A ND I A M W ITH Y OU TO THE E ND (M ATTHEW 28:20)

What then are we to say about these things? If God is for us, who is against us? 32 He who did not withhold his own Son, but gave him up for all of us, will he not with him also give us everything else? 33 Who will bring any charge against God's elect? It is God who justifies. 34 Who is to condemn? It is Christ Jesus, who died, yes, who was raised, who is at the right hand of God, who indeed intercedes for us. 35 Who will separate us from the love of Christ? Will hardship, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? 36 As it is written, "For your sake we are being killed all day long; we are accounted as sheep to be slaughtered." 37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. (Romans 8:31-37)

YOU CAN’T ESCAPE!

Page 25: S ESSION 4: GO… A ND I A M W ITH Y OU TO THE E ND (M ATTHEW 28:20)

38 For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 8:38-39)

YOU CAN’T ESCAPE!
