The Beth Israel star SHEVAT - ADAR 5777 ROANOKE, VA FEBRUARY 2017 JOIN US AT BETH ISRAEL SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 5, 8:30 A.M. BREAKFAST FOLLOWS, SPONSORED BY MIKE & BARBARA HUTKIN IN MEMORY OF THEIR PARENTS PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE Dear Friends, Beth Israel will offer activities for one and all this month! Two Shabbat speaker events will take place the rescheduled program with Beth Doughty on Friday, February 3, and Dr. Michael Friedlander on Friday, February 17, followed by a special Tu B’Shevat dinner. (Please RSVP!) Also in February, two annual events are scheduled for Sunday, the 5th – the Worldwide Wrap at Beth Israel and, later, the JCRS Super Souper Sunday at Temple Emanuel. Last, but not least, please plan to attend services and participate in activities during our Weekend of Wisdom February 24-26 (see ad on page 5). At its November 2016 meeting, our Board of Directors unanimously agreed to begin searching for a part-time interim rabbi. This decision was based on a recommendation from USCJ that Beth Israel develop a better understanding of its members’ desires and needs before searching for a new permanent rabbi. The Rabbinic Assembly (the professional association of Conservative rabbis) maintains a list of rabbis willing to perform part-time interim duties. These are Conservative rabbis who have retired from a successful pulpit career but wish to continue serving on a part-time interim basis or rabbis in between permanent commitments. Each rabbi has completed training on working with their interim congregation to provide basic rabbinic duties and to assist the congregation in identifying what it seeks in a permanent rabbi. The search for our new permanent rabbi would commence sometime during our part-time interim rabbi’s tenure and the interim rabbi could help us review potential candidates. Richard Kurshan has agreed to chair the part-time interim rabbi search committee with the assistance of Peter Rosenfeld, Rosalee Kaplan, Stan Zelikovich, and Kristin Gorin as committee members. All Beth Israel members are encouraged to contact Richard or any of the committee members to share your thoughts. In addition, please plan to attend one or more of the social-discussion meetings we will soon announce to discuss what qualities we as a congregation should seek in our new rabbi and how we can work to make our next rabbi’s tenure a success. We will soon be entering the month of Adar, during which Purim will be celebrated. Our annual Purim play is scheduled for Sunday, March 5. Since rehearsals will take place during February, be sure to let Marci Brumberg know now if you would like to participate. Our Sisterhood will also continue the tradition of offering Shalach Manot packages, and we encourage you to place your orders early. (The order form is located on page 8.) To plan and prepare sufficiently, we have set a deadline for placing orders of Friday, March 3. Orders cannot be accepted after that date. IN MEMORY OF THEIR PARENTS

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Dear Friends,

Beth Israel will offer activities for one and all this month! Two Shabbat speaker events will take place – the rescheduled

program with Beth Doughty on Friday, February 3, and Dr. Michael Friedlander on Friday, February 17, followed by a

special Tu B’Shevat dinner. (Please RSVP!) Also in February, two annual events are scheduled for Sunday, the 5th – the

Worldwide Wrap at Beth Israel and, later, the JCRS Super Souper Sunday at Temple Emanuel. Last, but not least, please

plan to attend services and participate in activities during our Weekend of Wisdom February 24-26 (see ad on page 5).

At its November 2016 meeting, our Board of Directors unanimously agreed to begin searching for a part-time interim

rabbi. This decision was based on a recommendation from USCJ that Beth Israel develop a better understanding of its

members’ desires and needs before searching for a new permanent rabbi. The Rabbinic Assembly (the professional

association of Conservative rabbis) maintains a list of rabbis willing to perform part-time interim duties. These are

Conservative rabbis who have retired from a successful pulpit career but wish to continue serving on a part-time interim

basis or rabbis in between permanent commitments. Each rabbi has completed training on working with their interim

congregation to provide basic rabbinic duties and to assist the congregation in identifying what it seeks in a permanent

rabbi. The search for our new permanent rabbi would commence sometime during our part-time interim rabbi’s tenure

and the interim rabbi could help us review potential candidates. Richard Kurshan has agreed to chair the part-time interim

rabbi search committee with the assistance of Peter Rosenfeld, Rosalee Kaplan, Stan Zelikovich, and Kristin Gorin as

committee members. All Beth Israel members are encouraged to contact Richard or any of the committee members to

share your thoughts. In addition, please plan to attend one or more of the social-discussion meetings we will soon

announce to discuss what qualities we as a congregation should seek in our new rabbi and how we can work to make our

next rabbi’s tenure a success.

We will soon be entering the month of Adar, during which Purim will be celebrated. Our annual Purim play is scheduled

for Sunday, March 5. Since rehearsals will take place during February, be sure to let Marci Brumberg know now if you

would like to participate.

Our Sisterhood will also continue the tradition of offering Shalach Manot packages, and we encourage you to place your

orders early. (The order form is located on page 8.) To plan and prepare sufficiently, we have set a deadline for placing

orders of Friday, March 3. Orders cannot be accepted after that date.

Be sure to read about upcoming activities on the following pages. Mark your calendars and plan to share some time with

your Beth Israel family.

Please note procedures with regard to closings due to inclement weather

During winter months, the decision might be made to close the synagogue due to inclement weather. Should

this occur, the phone message that plays when no one answers will be changed to inform callers of the

closure. We also plan to begin posting closings on our Facebook page, as well as on WDBJ (Channel 7) and

The 2017 Roanoke Jewish Festival is becoming a reality! On January 11, a group of 15 very enthusiastic volunteers attended our first meeting. We made a number of critical decisions on fall dates, categories, considerations and simplification. For our first venture, we’ve decided to crawl before walking and retain a smaller venue at Temple Emanuel limiting our costs while providing ease of access to crucial facilities. Stay tuned for upcoming meetings; we invite all interested folks to participate. Contact Lori Strauss at [email protected].

Because of charity the world abides. -Rashi

The Roanoke Jewish Federation (RJF) 2016 Fall Campaign has been successful due to

GOAL ONE: Raise $72,000 and increase total fundraising by 20% over 2015 and increase giving by 20% over 2015.

We raised in excess of $60,000 and contributions are still being received!

GOAL TWO: Increase number of participants by 50%-from 90 to 135.

We have received gifts from 82 members of our community and 24 donors outside our community.

Although we did not reach our goals this year, we did maintain our 2015 goals and attracted new donors and donors

outside our community. We will still be able to provide funding for vital Jewish programs that enrich our youth,

families and community. It also empowers the RJF to develop programs and events that foster a stronger sense of

community between our congregations.

The RJF board expresses our deepest gratitude to our donors. Avi Greenberg (President), Lori Strauss (Campaign

JEWISH COMMUNITY RELIGIOUS SCHOOL NEWS

HONORING FAMOUS JEWISH WOMEN CHEFS

As we looked forward to Super Souper Sunday on February 5, most of January was food oriented. It was only

appropriate, in keeping with our yearly theme of famous Jewish women, that we learn about famous Jewish women

chefs. We focused on Jennie Grossinger, Joan Nathan, Susie Fishbein and Jamie Geller. Jennie Grossinger created

traditional Eastern European meals which helped make Grossingers a world famous resort in the Catskills. Joan

Nathan was the Julia Child of American Jewish cooking and her book, Jewish Cooking in America, is a classic. Two

modern Jewish chefs, Susie Fishbein and Jamie Geller, have brought kosher cooking into the 21st century.

Students learned about these talented women. They selected recipes from each which they included in their personal

Jewish recipe cookbook. What good is talking about Jewish cooks if you don’t cook? Each class made a soup which

will be entered in the Soup Off. In art they decorated soup bowls. They read books about food. In music they

learned wonderful songs to be sung on Super Souper Sunday. It has truly been a delectable month at our school.

Concluding our special Shabbat series ... WHO are the " MOVERS AND SHAKERS"

JEWISH COMMUNITY PRESCHOOL UPDATE

We hope that the new year is going well for all of you. We’re getting back to our schedule after the winter break, snow days and holidays.

In January, we honored the life and accomplishments of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. He had a Dream of civil rights and liberty for all. He dedicated his life to helping others, a trait that we appreciate and should try to emulate. As Dr. King believed,The Time is Always Right to Do Right!!

It is that time again to mark this on your calendars: JCP Spring Fling will be held on April 2nd! We are doing a carnival this year, and we definitely need the help of the Jewish community and our Pre-School parents. It’s not too early to start thinking if you will be able to donate goods or services, as well as volunteering to help with the many aspects of making a successful, and joyous, fundraiser. It truly takes a village to get this done!!

Soon, we will be celebrating Tu B’Shevat, the holiday that celebrates the earth and its trees. The children will be learning how we can help our earth stay clean and to understand how much trees help us. There have been horrible fires raging in Israel recently. The loss is profound. Please consider donating needed money to help reforest Israel. The Jewish National Fund is the organization that will be implementing the tree renewal. It is of vital interest, and we hope you all will help.

Valentine’s Day is also around the corner. In JCP, we celebrate the blessings of friendship, love and showing respect. Our school has always highlighted the importance of kindness and cooperation.

Believe it or not – it is now time to start Registration for the 2017-2018 school year! Please call Chen Greenberg (540-467-1459) to register – and please tell your friends and neighbors about the wonderful pre-school we have!

We are also accepting registration for Camp Shalom, our fabulous summer camp that runs during the first two weeks of June. Chen Greenberg can share more information when you contact her.

Have a fabulous February!!

HAVE YOU ENROLLED (OR RE-ENROLLED)

IN KROGER’S COMMUNITY REWARDS PROGRAM?

Kroger’s newest fundraising program enables you to raise

funds for the synagogue just by scanning your Kroger Plus

Shopper’s Card when you buy groceries! All you need is the card

and a few moments of your time to register on-line.

Remember… you must re-enroll in Kroger’s Community

Rewards Program annually, so please do so now if you

have not already enrolled for the new term. To do

this, have your Kroger Plus Shopper’s Card handy and

go to krogercommunityrewards.com. Please sign up

for a Kroger Rewards Account or re-enroll NOW!

Beth Israel has raised over $65,000 since beginning to

participate in Kroger’s Fund-Raising Programs! We thank you for

your involvement in the past and appreciate your continued help

in raising funds that benefit the Synagogue.
