We are coniposers and lyricists who are being imfaii-ly treated and fînanciaUy penalized by Broadcast Music, Inc. for having left BMJ in the past to become members of ASCAP. We thought we had an agreement with BMI to continue lo receive 100% of oui- royalties as long as our songs stayed at BMI. Even if we left. BMI bas

previously honored this agreement. Now however, BMI bas unilaterally decided to "rewrite" the agreement and eut our royalty payments up to 80% of what we would bave received if we were still with BMI or if we agree to go back. We believe that BMI should honor its agreements and treat ail BMI writers, past and présent, alike.

Wliile tliis reduced royalty scheme does not affect current BMI coniposers and lyricists, it does trap tliem economically into staying at BMI. Our counsel, the law firm of Paid, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison, lias commenced arbitration proceedings againsl BMI to protect our righls. ASCAP is backing us and paying our légal expenses.

foa — -Sr f/stys The Nordoff-RobbinsMusicTherapy Centre opened in KentishTbwn, NorthLondon, in 1982. Itwasthefirstof its kind in Great Britain and fulfils two main purposes: the treatment of children with handicaps of ail kinds and the training of prof essional musicians to become music therapists. Both are based on the very spécifie techniques developed by the late Paul Nordoff composer and pianist, and Clive Robbins, teacher of handicapped children, for the creative use of music improvised to meet the needs of handicapped children.

Cut off by their mental, physical or emotional disabilities f rom the expériences and pleasures of everyday lif e, handicapped children frequently lack the meansof communication and the ability to form relationships with other people. It is the lack of communication which is the most constant concern of those who work and live with such children. Atthe Centre, sessions with each child are undertaken by two professional i the music and the other supporting the child. The rôle of improvised music id musical activity, stimulating responses <—' jjd|—' -

The very form and structure in music can bring a sense of ordei; security and joy to the mentally or emotionally disabled child. The Centre receives no officiai grant; the expansion of its work has corne about through the generositv of friends and well-wishers.
