I am really pleased to have this opportunity to recommend

the Select Trail for 2014. Stroud and the surrounding

area are rich in craft talent and the Select Trail provides

an opportunity to explore that richness in the glorious

surroundings of the town, its villages and countryside.

We are really fortunate to have Stroud International

Textiles working hard for the craft community in

Gloucestershire and providing visitors with such a

fantastic experience. The Select Trail is just one way

in which they support the wealth of professional

designer-makers in the Stroud Valleys.

On the trail you’ll be able to see a wide range of crafts

and appreciate different approaches to design. There is

something enchanting and inspiring about watching an

experienced and talented maker at work – the

combination of skill, rhythmic work, and design talent.

That first-hand experience of meeting the maker,

soaking up the workshop atmosphere and the artist-led

exhibitions all adds immeasurably to the craft object.

The Select Trail offers the opportunity to do just that.

Do try and visit as many venues as possible. Make the

most of this excellent opportunity of meeting the makers.

You will be impressed and entertained and, above all,

bowled over by the quality and variety of work.

Anne’s work explores the versatility of felt as a medium

through colour, texture and shape. She combines the

finest merino wool with lightweight silk and cotton

fabrics and wisps of silk, linen and metallic threads to

create unique new textiles with a rich depth of colour

and exciting textures. Her current collection includes

nuno-felted seamless tops and jackets, textured silk

and merino scarves, felted hats and gloves and delicate

couture lampshades.

Jenny Bicat trained in Fine Art. She puts colour into

cloth drawing on her knowledge of painting. In her

studio she develops, using traditional (non-digital)

screen printing techniques, intricately engineered

designs on silk and linen and calico – flat pattern pieces

that she hand sews (then makes) into unique scarves,

jackets and occasional décor pieces. She delights in

combining the best traditions of Twentieth Century art

and craft with the often sculptural experiments of

modern fashion.

background to her obsession for working with paper.

Now joyfully released from the worlds of industry and

education, she relishes the perversity of making clothes

by being assembled behind sealed glass, are both

inaccessible and unwearable.

Environmentally sustainable works using mixed fabric

pieces such as rich velvets, pastel cottons and rainbow

wools to build up pieces having a myriad of colours and

textures. Designs are built up in layers graduating

shades, tones and texture to create a mosaic from

fabric. Sue is a fan of Rothko and enjoys emulating the

colour phasing of his work. She has worked with

schools and projects to create pieces including memory

rugs. Member of the Waterways Craft Guild.

On foot: From Slad Road walk through Park Gardens

up to an opening in the wall at the top of the gardens.

Go through the gateway and there is a complex of

wooden houses to the immediate right which is

Springhill Co-Housing. Walk into the car park, past

the car ports on your left to the end and follow the path

round to the right. You will see some wooden steps in

front of you, go up and 27 is the right hand door.

By Car: From Slad Road drive up Folly Lane and

turn into Springfield Road which is the second

turning on the right. Park on Springfield Road if you

can but parking is limited. There is no parking in

Springhill itself.w

Matthew Harris works with both cloth, paper and thread

to create drawings/collages and textiles. By a process

of dyeing, staining, cutting, piecing, stitching and

binding he constructs work that is primarily concerned

with the translation of drawn marks onto cloth. He has

exhibited widely in UK as well as Europe, Japan and the

US. Represented by Erskine Hall & Coe.

The studio is a short walk from Stroud town centre.

Uplands Cottage is in Slad Road, five houses along

from the Fountain pub, off the B4070 Slad Road.

Take the path to the right of the house and go up the

narrow path as far as the small green gate on the left.

Note parking is very limited in Slad Road.

Marion creates small, unusual sculptures using

stoneware clay, stains, oxides and glazes. They are

inspired by how she sees and interprets the natural

world that surrounds her. Most of them are totally non

functional, but hopefully they give pleasure and

meaning to the heart and to the eye.

The Studio is a short walk from the town centre and

Stroud, there is a green gate approximately five houses

along from the the Fountain pub, on the left hand side.

Go through the gate up the path and 105 can be found

“As a practitioner my roots are in the tradition of

landscape and still-life painting. My recent work has

involved drawing painting, printing and sewing in direct

response to the landscape of Miami and the Cotswolds.

I layer, superimpose and repeat details from studies of

shimmering water and marine life, fish, shells flowers,

etc. within structures that echo both Eastern carpet

design and formal grid of the city. I regard these

‘landmarks’, natural and man-made, as equally transient.”

From Stroud take the B4070 through Slad to Bulls

Take the right off this road, just before Beech Lane, the

Bill Rickenson’s work is in stoneware, and raku which

roughly translates as ‘seeking contentment’, and is

based on the Japanese firing technique associated with

the tea ceremony. Each piece of work is unique, some

having ‘lustre’ glazes, from the fire and smoking

process. Tall forms combine ‘throwing’ and hand-

building. Many box forms are influenced by ancient

carved wooden chests from the Swat Valley in Pakistan.

Other lidded forms have a ‘Viking’ influence.

Take A419 from Stroud. At Chalford Green, 150 yards

past Christ Church turn left into High Street (before

SIT aims to broaden the perspective of textile arts to

other art forms and to link to crafts and the applied arts.

In 2014 we are raising the profile for design and the link

to the applied arts. Good craft isn’t just about function

it should also deliver pleasure and satisfaction. We hope

to raise debate and place good craft design central to

our well being.

SIT makes a significant contribution to the economic

and cultural prosperity of the region through our year

round programme. In the Select Trail we offer

opportunities for participating artists to develop their

creative practices and reach new audiences. This is

done through our high quality brochure and marketing

that in 2014 is extending to reach digital audiences UK

and internationally.
