A DOG’S OR A CAT’S PURPOSE
Being a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten year old Irish
Wolfhound named Belker. The dog’s owners, Ron, his wife Lisa, and their little boy
Shane, were all very attached to Belker, and they were hoping for a miracle. I examined
Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I told the family we couldn’t do anything for
Belker, and offered the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home. As we made
arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for six year old
Shane to observe the procedure. They felt as though Shane might learn something from
the experience.
The next day, I felt that familiar catch in my throat as Belker’s family surrounded him.
Shane seemed so calm, petting the old dog for the last time, that I wondered if he understood what was going on.
Within a few minutes, Belker peacefully slipped away. The little boy seemed to accept Belker’s transition
without any difficulty or confusion. We sat together for a while after Belker’s death, wondering aloud about the
sad fact that animal lives are shorter than human lives. Shane, who had been listening quietly, piped up, “I know
why.” Startled, we all turned to him. What came out of his mouth next stunned me. I’d never heard a more
comforting explanation.
He said, “People are born so that they can learn how to live a good life - - like loving everybody all the time and
being nice right?” The six year old continued, “Well dogs already know how to do that, so they don’t have to stay
as long.” (Author Unknown)
Remember. If a dog were a teacher, you would learn things like:
When loved ones come home, always run and greet them.
Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joy ride.
Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to
be pure ecstasy.
Take naps.
Stretch before rising.
Run, romp, and play daily.
Avoid biting when a simple growl will do.
On warm days, stop to lie on your back upon the grass.
On hot days, drink lots of water and lie under a shady tree.
When you’re happy, dance around and wag your entire body.
Delight in the simple joy of a long walk.
Eat with gusto and enthusiasm. Stop when you have had enough.
Be loyal. Never pretend to be something you’re not.
When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by, nuzzle them gently.

SPECIAL RECIPES Gluten Free Drunken Clams Casino
From the Weed Family
Ingredients:
1/2 cup chopped red bell pepper
2 finely diced baby pepperoncini
4 slices thick cut bacon
2 teaspoons of minced garlic
1/4 teaspoon fresh ground black pepper
1/3 cup grated parmesan cheese
1/4 cup of crunchy gluten free bread crumbs
1 bottle gluten free beer
18 little neck clams
1/4 stick of butter
Directions:
Prepping the stuffing: MELT the 1/4 stick of butter
in a medium sauce pan over medium heat. As soon as
butter is melted then ADD the bacon and fry until
done. FRYING it in the butter will make the bacon just
a bit softer. Once the bacon is done remove it from
the pan and set it aside. LEAVE the bacon grease and
the butter in the pan. ADD the bell pepper, pepper-
oncini, garlic, black pepper, parmesan cheese, and
bread crumbs. MIX together and keep on medium heat
for about 5 minutes stirring often. REMOVE the mix-
ture from the pan and set aside in a small bowl.
Preparing the clams: ADD beer the bottle of gluten
beer to a medium sized dutch oven and let WARM
over medium-high heat for about 5 minutes until hot.
Add the clams and cook until they open. REMOVE
them as soon as they pop open. Once they are cool
enough to handle then REMOVE the empty half of the
shell. STUFF each clam with the filling and then ADD
a piece of bacon large enough to just fit over top of
the clam. PUT the clams on a flat tray and heat your
oven's broiler on high. Once the oven is hot then PUT
the clams under the broiler for 3 to 4 minutes watch-
ing them closely so they do not burn. REMOVE from
the oven and serve right away. ENJOY!

SEPTA PRESS RELEASE Contact: Andrew Busch Public Information Manager
Regional Rail Passes
Required for Papal Visit Travel on Sept. 26-27
On Sale July 20
All Customers – Regular Riders & Visitors –
Must Pre-Purchase Special One Day Passes to Ride Regional Rail Sept. 26 & 27;
Pass Quantities Limited.
PHILADELPHIA (July 13, 2015) – SEPTA has announced: One-day passes for Regional Rail
travel during Papal Visit go on sale tomorrow Mon. July 20, 9 a.m.
Passes will be sold online through a new ecommerce website that will launch when the
pass sales begin. SEPTA is limiting the number of passes that will be sold, and requiring
pre-purchase of passes, to keep crowd numbers consistent with the capacity that will be
available on Regional Rail trains.
During the Papal Visit (Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 26 and 27), SEPTA is doubling
capacity by modifying Regional Rail operations in an effort to accommodate travel
demand. A total of just 18 outlying Regional Rail stations will be in operation –
compared to nearly 150 stations that are normally open. This will allow SEPTA to run
express-type pick-up service to the events in Center City, with similar return service back
to the same outlying stations afterwards.
All riders using Regional Rail on Sept. 26-27 – including regular SEPTA customers and
visitors – will be required to pre-purchase these special one-day passes. No other fares,
including TrailPasses, or cash, will be accepted. Papal Visit Pass purchases are
non-refundable.
SEPTA has made some minor adjustments to the Regional Rail Papal Visit operations
plan first announced in June. The Levittown Station has been added on the Trenton
Line, and Pennbrook Station has replaced the Lansdale Station on the Lansdale/
Doylestown Line.
Event drop-off locations in Center City have also been added.
SEPTA will operate to/from Jefferson, 30th Street and University City Stations during
the two-day Papal Visit. Riders will then walk one-to-two miles to the events.
Afterwards, riders must board at the same Center City Station where they were dropped
off for return service to their outlying station. Cont. on next page.
9 118 SJBosco
Regional Rail lines and Outlying Stations that will be in operation are listed by
Center City drop-off/boarding station.
HOW TO PURCHASE & USE PASSES
All riders using Regional Rail on Sept. 26 and 27 will be required to pre-purchase these
One Day Regional Rail Passes. No other fares, passes or cash, will be accepted.
Pass purchases are not refundable. A link to the e-commerce site for One Day Regional
Rail Passes will be posted at www.septa.org when tickets go on sale Monday, July 20.
[Same site will be used for sales of a special three-day Papal Visit transit pass starting
Mon., July 27. The special three-day Papal Visit transit pass will be valid for travel on all
SEPTA subways, buses and trolleys from Saturday, Sept. 26 through Monday, Sept.
28, for $10. Customers can also use tokens, transfers and weekly and monthly passes on
subways, buses and trolleys.]
A limited number of One Day Regional Rail Passes will be available for sale for each
station starting at 9 am Mon., July 20. Each One Day Pass costs $10 and is valid for
one passenger. Up to 10 passes may be purchased in one transaction through the e-
commerce site. Those planning to travel on Saturday and Sunday will need to purchase
passes for both days. All passengers travelling Regional Rail these days have to
purchase a Papal Pass, including seniors and children over age 5. Customers with
valid Pa. Transit ID Card/Medicare Card can purchase reduced fare passes through the
e-commerce site for $ 5; they will then be required to show valid ID with Papal Pass at
time of boarding.
Service will operate from the outlying stations to Center City from 5:30 a.m. to
noon both days. To help alleviate congestion and enhance safety, SEPTA will have two
travel slots, first from 5:30 a.m.-8:30 a.m., second 8:30 a.m.-noon at each station
except Cornwells Heights and Croydon. Cornwells Heights will be open during early
slot from 5:30 a.m.-8:30 a.m., and Croydon from 8:30 a.m.-noon. When customers
purchase the One Day Regional Rail Passes, they must select their outlying station and
time slot. The name of the station will be printed on the back of the pass. It will be valid
only for travel from the specified outlying station during the selected time slot, and for
travel from Center City back to that outlying station after the Papal Visit events. ###

Papacy [‘pāpəsē ] noun: papacy plural noun: papacies
the office or authority of pope Definition from Oxford Dictionaries, Oxford University Press.
Ed. Note: We have the Archdiocese of Washington’s permission to use this resource which they authored in 2008. The
Phila. Archdiocese and our parish staff edited/updated it for use here. We hope this Parish Bulletin Papacy series refreshes
your enthusiasm to chat comfortably with family, neighbors, friends, co-workers, even complete strangers, about Pope
Francis and our Roman Catholic Church. Questions or comments? Email [email protected].
10. Which Popes reigned during the 20th (1900s) and 21st centuries (2000s)? Names & Reigns clockwise:
;
11. Why do we say that the Pope is the visible source and foundation of unity?
The Second Vatican Council’s Dogmatic Constitution on the Church (Lumen Gentium, 23) states the Pope, that
is, the Bishop of Rome and Successor of St. Peter, is “the perpetual and visible source and foundation of the
unity both of the bishops and of the whole company of the faithful.” This refers to the fact that by Christ’s
decision, St. Peter is charged with confirming the faith of the brethren. Papal teaching through the centuries has
proclaimed the faith of the Church and has been the center of unity and peace in guarding the truth of Christ.
12. Why does the Pope permanently reside in Rome?
Since the Pope is the successor of Saint Peter who was the Bishop of Rome, he like Saint Peter lives in Rome.
Rome is also the city where both Saints Peter and Paul were martyred.
13. What is Vatican City?
The State of Vatican City is the territorial seat of the papacy. It happens to be the smallest sovereign state in the
world. Situated within the city of Rome, it embraces 108.7 acres. Within its one finds the Vatican Palace, museums,
art galleries, libraries, a radio station, post office, bank, astronomical observatory, offices, apartments*, service facilities, St.
Peter’s Basilica, and neighboring buildings between the Basilica and the Viale Vaticano. Extraterritorial rights of Vatican
City extend to more than ten buildings (including major basilicas and office buildings of various congregations of the
