What is an MD/PhD program?

• Doctorate of Medicine and Philosophy (MD/PhD) is dual doctoral degree for physician-scientists

– Trained as a physician and scientist

• Yale MD/PhD program is an MSTP (Medical Scientist Training Program) funded by NIH (National Institutes of Health)

– 43 Medical Schools have this program

– Medical School Tuition and Stipend allowances

• American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS)

• AMCAS is the “common” application process

– Prerequisite (“Pre-Med”) courses (transcript)

– MCAT

– Letters of Recommendation (3 letters, 2 from science teachers)

– Significant experiences short answers

– MD essay: Why do you want to be a physician?

– MD/PhD essay: Why do you want to be a physician-scientist?

– Significant Research Experience essay: Tell us about your previous research experiences!
