HOPE HAS A FACE
I have seen it - in their eyes, and in their smiles.
And even at mes in the expressions that
message misery.
For weeks now I have been among the faces of so
many, some paents and some caregivers, who
stare down the daunng treatments, the fague,
the uncertainty, the creeping fear that is cancer. I
have seen it before over so many years of
ministry in individuals whom I have known and
loved, but never in such numbers, with such
density. What I see is hope.
It is a hope so palpable not even the strain of
chemotherapy, nor the rigors of radiaon, can
mask it. It shines through the struggle and past
dire prognosis. And I have found myself marveling
at its presence in this place. I would expect it in
the midst of a religious or faith-based community
where there is a shared belief. But this is a much
different and diverse community, where some
possess what is a variety of faiths, and some none
at all.
I have come to a new awareness in this
experience. It is that hope can be shared, or
transmi#ed. It is also infecous. And in some way,
at least in part, it is shared face to face. I have
seen it, and I have caught it. And I hope I have
given it to others.
Hope has a face.

The deadline will be August 10 for the September
issue.
JULY-AUGUST 2014 ST. LUKE’S EPISCOPAL CHURCH — BRINGING YOU GOOD NEWS PAGE 2
Deadlines: Newsletter – 10th of each month (to Kate Dolan at [email protected]) Sunday bulletin & “Let’s Connect” – Wednesdays by noon (to parish office at [email protected])
Allow me to share with you a perspecve on
Chrisan hope which I discovered in my reading of
the English writer of many books on the spiritual life
and myscism, Evelyn Underhill, from her work, The
House of the Soul:
Hope finds all of life penetrated by a significance
that points beyond itself, and has a trus,ul
expectaon that the ceaseless stream of events,
thoughts, joys, trials - the whole stuff of
experience - means something, contributes to
something; and only has value because it points
beyond itself to God, is an earnest of rich fields of
experience awaing the soul.

Giving in Action — THANK YOU!
The parishioners of St Luke’s for many years have
made individual contribuons to the monthly
reverse offering campaign. Each month from 250 to
400 pounds of non-perishable goods are leA at the
back of the church. These contribuons are
donated to food banks in Coeur d’Alene, Post Falls,
Rathdrum and Athol. Special gatherings are made
for the North Idaho Violence Prevenon Center
twice a year and the Kootenai County SPCA Shelter
once per year. At least once a year we give the
donaons to Fresh Start. The small slips the ushers
make available list those things we hope to receive
in the current month.
Recently we’ve noced how bare the shelves are at
the food banks. Reduced contribuons from other
sources and increased demand driven by the slow
economic recovery both take their toll. St Luke’s
can be very proud of its consistent charity towards
these causes.
So please connue to take those
slips of colored paper during the
offering on Sunday and bring in your
donaon! Contact John or Betsy
McTear (208-665-0809) with
quesons or suggesons.

St. Luke’s Madeline Hennig To A3end the Episcopal Youth Event
Our own Madeline Hennig is among the 11 youth from our diocese attending the Episcopal Youth Event (EYE) near Philadelphia this summer. Melinda, Madeline’s mom, had attended EYE as a teen and wanted Madeline to have that same opportunity.
EYE is a triennial event organized by the Episcopal Church Center Youth Ministry Office and is a blend of play, worship, fellowship, mission and music. They depart Spokane as a group on July 8 and join approximately 1,200 other youth for this wonderful five-day experience. For more information on this event, please visit http://www.episcopalchurch.org/page/episcopal-youth-event-2014.
As you may be aware, Madeline is an acolyte and lector here at St. Luke’s. Apart from church life, she is a Sophomore at Lake City High School where she participates in soccer and student council. She also plays with CDA Sting Soccer Club and will devote much of the summer to her soccer training.

Important Message — Call St. Luke's!
Recently, Rev. Jane went to the hospital to visit a member of our congregation. Rev. Jane had been told by this person’s friend, who also is a member of St. Luke's, that this person was hospitalized after an accident. Unknown to Rev. Jane, another St. Luke's member was also in the hospital, having been admitted the night before. Unfortunately, Rev. Jane didn't know, Parish Administrator NJ Daniel didn't know, the Prayer Chain didn't know, etc.
This happens too often and is really a breakdown in our communications. Hospitals are no longer allowed to make patient's names available to clergy or pastoral visitors due to privacy policies. Many times, family members don't think to inform the church when someone is ill or hospitalized. Friends assume that the church already knows and that may not be the case.
St. Luke’s respects the privacy of everyone if that
is their wish, but we are a church family and we
want to be there for each other. If you have an
elective surgery coming up or if you become ill,
whether you are at home or in the hospital, make a
call to the church office (208-664-5533) or have a
friend or family member call for you. If you hear
that someone is ill or in the hospital, do not
assume that the church has been
informed. NJ has said that she would
rather receive ten calls about the same
person than not know at all.

Episcofollies Saturday, October 4 and Sunday, October 5
Don't forget to put these dates on your calendar!
The Episcofollies will be held on Saturday evening,
October 4 at 7:30pm and Sunday aAernoon,
October 5 at 2pm. This event is held in the parish
hall and ckets will go on sale in September. This
is an event you will not want to miss!
We started this bi-annual performance in 1996 as a
fundraiser for Dr. Carole Denison, who at that me
was a missionary in Honduras. We have connued
to raise money for various charies, i.e. Fresh Start,
Boys and Girls Club and Coeur d'Alene Homes. This
year will be a benefit for the North Idaho Violence
Prevenon Center (formerly the Women's Center).
October is Domesc Violence Awareness month so
we hope to be able to help the Center in the
important service they provide to the community.
All the performers in the Episcofollies are members
of St. Luke's. You will be impressed with the talent
and courage of our congregaon. We will be
planning and praccing over the summer and
looking forward to entertaining you in October.
This will be an unforge#able experience. It
produces much laughter and lots of memories.
Don't miss it!
If you are interested in performing or have
quesons, contact the Episcofollies Commi#ee
(Carolyn Alberts (208-765-6526) or Phyllis Albee
(208-777-7213)).
It’s Not Too Late to Sign Up for July through September Dinner Circles
A sign-up sheet for July-August-September Dinner
Circles is posted in the Parish Hall. Dinner Circles
are groups of about eight people who get together
once a month for three months for a potluck meal
in a member's home.
Dinner Circles are a great way for new people to get
to know others in the parish and for people who
have been coming a while to get to know new
people — or even people they have been saying
hello to on Sundays for years! The program is
sponsored by the Welcoming Commi#ee.

August Coffee Hour Hosts S-ll
Needed
Can you help us with a coffee hour following the 10:30 a.m. service in August? There are still two open Sundays on the summer schedule. A sign-up sheet is posted on the bulletin board in the Parish Hall.
Remember, it isn't the intention of a coffee hour to provide lunch! Cookies and coffee are just fine. If you can help, please sign up and participate in two of our core values at the same time—hospitality and service. Thank you.
If you have any questions about Coffee Hour, please contact Gwen Letson (208-762-1199).
6th Annual Outdoor Cinema Saturday, August 16, 7 p.m. in the St. Luke’s parking lot
Join us for a family-friendly movie with FREE hot dogs, chips and soda for the
church and community. The movie will be Disney’s huge hit, Frozen, which is
rated PG for mild acon and rude humor.
Food will be served at 7 p.m. and the movie will begin at dusk. Bring your lawn
chair or a blanket to sit on under the stars. Bring and tell your friends!

In attending EYE, Madeline is excited to meet new people; it is her hope to engage with other youth who are also Episcopalian and become closer to the church.
This trip is made possible through the financial support of the attendee, the congregation and the diocese, equally, and St. Luke’s portion is $316. If you would like to provide a donation on Madeline’s behalf, please make the notation "EYE-Madeline" on your check or envelope. It is quite an honor to be included in this small group. We are proud to sponsor you, Madeline, and are blessed that you will be representing us. Dana Smith
