Message from the Artistic Director In November 2004 the-Halifax Camerata Singers presented, for the first time, a concert of memory and remembrance. It was a poignant event. Scheduled between All Soufs' Day and Remembrance Day, it seived in part to honour those who had lost their lives in times of war and conflict. But it also presented the choir and the audience an opportunity to-remember all the special people - mothers and fathers, siblings and children, friends and strangers -who had had an impact on our lives but who were no longer living among us.

Our concert provided a place to remember -and together we honoured our loved ones, lost in all but memory to illness, tragedy, or just the passage of time.

After we had performea our third such concert, in November 2008, I felt it-was time to record some of the wonderful compositions that remind us how the spirit can endure everything, even the end of life. I hope you find in this recording a-place of peace where you, too, can remember.

The reaction of the audience was emotional and touching. All knew the grief that death brings. Most, perhaps, had recovered from the Jeff Joudrey pain. But no one had forgotten the people who ,),;, Artistic Director had passed away. {:S

The aim of this recording is to take each listener to a place of comfort where, without sadness, it is pos.5ible to honour and remember lives well lived. The sentiment behind SOIACE is captured in the song Remember, a setting of a Christina Rossetti poem by Canadian composer Stephen Chatman. This evocative text, set to wann choral hannonies, encourages the listener not to let remembering bring only pain, nor to let mourning extinguish happiness. Veni, Sancte Spiritus (Mark Sirett) ,Prayer Before Sleep (Sid Robinovitch), The I.ast Invocation (Stephen Smith), and Abide With Me ( Gary Ewer). These four Canadian composers have each arranged a well-e.5tablished text in a musical style that reflects iIB origins. In Veni, Sancte Spiritus, a 17th centuty translation of a Middle English text, Sirett sensitively weaves the prayers of this text together through the oontrnsting sonoritie; of men's and women's voices before bringing them together in a climactic invocation to ''fill the heart with thy light" Sid Robinovitch's strophic arrangement of Prayer Before Sleep asks God to watch over the petitioner and give strength, rest, healing, and illumination for the coming day. The I.ast Invocation, which was composed by Stephen Smith for the Halifax Camernta Singers' 2oo6 remembrance concert, is a sensitive setting of a Walt Whitman poem that speaks of the soul's inevitable journey to eternity. The clasfilc Abide With Me, which is said to have been a favorite of Mahatma Gandhi and King Goorge V, is often sung at Christian funerals. This arrangement for mixed chorus is by Nova Scotia composer Gary Ewer.

Confidence that death is not the end but a new beginning is another common theme. In Even Such is Time, English composer Bob Chilcott sets a 17th century poem by Sir Walter Raleigh to express a meditation on death and the afterlife.Mmaz:Adanai comes from the song cycle "Triumphs of the Spiri~" written by Canadian Srul hving Glick The text, from Exodus 34:6-7, tells of God's unfailing love, which sustains the faithful generation after generation. 1\vo songs in the American spiritual tradition express the same faith. Give Me Jesus is a simple and straightforward arrangement of an old song by American Wendell Whalum, who for 34 years was the legendacy director of the internationally recognized glee club at Atlanta's Morehouse College. In Like a Child, Canadian composer Ru~ert Lang gives the sopranos the solo line of a contemporary hymn by Loretta Ellenberger, while the rest of the choir sings text fragments in a gentle accompaniment. Three pieces address the tragic losses associated with war. Canadian composers Stephen Chatman and Eleanor Daley have

In mourning the deaths of the children, not to mention the loss of his famous choir school and its vast music library, choinnaster Rudolf Mauersberger was detennined that music would rise from the ashes. He wrote a motet based on the lamentations ofJeremiah ("How lonely sits the city that was full of people ... ")and conducted its first perlor-mance on Aug. 4, 1945, at the site of the burned-out church. In ~contrast to Mauersberger's h~ is the joy of Lux Aummque, which was

writtm ~the exreptionalAmeriam Eric Whitacre. This choral delight~ powerlul hannoni~ and a modem poem that has been translated into I.atin to create a sensational atmosphere of shimmering ligh~ awe, and optimism. It speaks of birth perhaps even rebirth and resurrection. ' The CD close5 with The Kontakion, Rupert Lang's inspired setting of teufrom the f.agmi Orthodox memorial liturgy. This work has a1so ended each of the Halifax Camernta Singers' remembnmce concerts of music and readin~, which run unintenupted, without intennissions or applause. For the singing of The Kontakion, the audience is invited to join the choir in an emotional tribute to loved on~ who are no longer with us, voice; soaring with the cr&endo of the organ;

1-Ialifax Camerata Singers is Atlantic Canada's leading chamber choir. Since its founding in 1986, Camerata has distinguished itself in the performance of choral repertoire covering all periods and styles. Camerata regularly presents concerts throughout Nova Scotia and in 2001 was established as the core choir of the Symphony Nova Scotia Chorus. In 2008 the ensemble was awarded the prestigious Galaxie Rising Star Award in

1 the national choral competition cosponsored by CB('JRadio-Canada and the Canada Council for the Arts. The choir is especially proud to commission music from Canadian composers, and to encourage young musicians through its Camerata Xara young women's choir, choral bursaries, Young Composers Competition, and Youth Mentoring P~ogram. Jeff Joudrey, Artistic Director

Jeff Joudrey is highly regarded for his vision, musical leadership, and standards of excellence in choral music. Founder of the First Baptist Girls Choir (1983) and Halifax Camerata Singers ( 1986), he has provided challenging and rewarding choral opportunities for many Nova Scotia singers. In addition to being Director of Music at First Baptist Church in Truro, Jeff is Chorus Master of the Symphony Nova Scotia Chorus. A native of Nova Scotia, he studied organ at Acadia University, Haarlem International Organ Academy, and McGill University. His conducting mentors include Elmer Iseler, Wayne Riddell, and Helmuth Rilling.
