store manager Mohammed Mohsen said.

A friendly staff including Alexis, Marcus, Teresa, Noseem and Moham-med are knowledgeable and are ready to assist you in finding whatever you need. A grand opening is in the plan-ning stages and will take place some-time in April.

“We want to complete our mer-chandising of the store and make sure everything is ready for our grand opening,” Mohsen said. The store has already paid dividends for a lot of residents who have taken advantage of having such a selection in Shafter. “I usually have to make a trip to Bakers-field when I do my yard work and get supplies for my garden, but True Value

has everything I need. This is a great thing for the people of Shafter,” said Luis Martinez, who came in the store to pick up some fertilizer, potting soil and a new hose and sprinkler.

“We just love the people of Shafter and they have been very good to us. This is a great place for our family, and we want to keep serving the com-munity for a long time.”

The Shafter varsity basketball team took on Kennedy on Feb. 4 in a very intense game that the Generals ended up losing,

77-72. The next day they played rival Wasco in a win-or-go- home game, since

the Generals had to have a .500 record to make the playoffs. The Generals came to play and beat the Tigers 61-41. They finished 6th in league play with a 5-7 record, and had

a 14-14 record over all. The Generals got the 16th seed

for Division 3 and will play at the number 1 seed

Mt. Whitney. The team says they are looking to “shock

the Section.”The Lady Generals bas-

ketball team had a home game against Kennedy on Feb. 4, and they lost a heart-breaker after Kennedy scored to take the lead with just 7 seconds to play. But the Lady Generals bounced back with a lopsid-ed victory against rival Wasco, 55-36. They finished the regular season with a record of 8-4, which was good enough for 2nd place in league. Their overall record is 16-7, and they have the 7th seed for the Division 2 playoffs. They will have a home game against number 10 seed Monache.

The Shafter Generals boys soccer team started off with an impressive win against Kennedy Feb. 4, winning the game, 4-2. Then on Wednesda,y the Generals took on rival Wasco in a very close game that ended in a 1-1 tie.. The Generals 4-6-2 record got them 4th in league play, and an overall re-cord of 7-10-7. The Generals did not make the postseason, but they played hard every game and had a great season. Tristan Mal-donado, a senior on the team, said, “I’m

going to miss playing with these groups of guys, and it was a fun ride for these past four years of high school soccer.”

The lady Generals soccer team had a game vs. Kennedy on Tuesday that they won by a score of 2-1. Then on Monday they took on rival Wasco for 2nd place in league. The Generals won the game 2-1.

They had a 9-2-1 record in league play and a 14-9-2 record overall for the regular sea-son. The seedings for Division 5 have not came out yet, but it looks like the lady Gen-erals will most likely have a home game because of their dominant performance in league play.

The Shafter lady wrestling team had their valley meet this week at Mission Oak High school. Esmeralda Torres took 4th, Stephania Ledesma took 5th, Cloie Her-nandez took 5th, Areyal Hernandez took 8th, and Jennifer Fernandez took 8th place. These 5 girls all qualified to for the Masters meet for a chance to qualify for State. For the boys, Christian Garza took 7th, Nate Gonzalez took 8th and Rafa Zamudio took 5th, which all secured them spots for Mas-ters. Fernando Carreno, Conner Rubalcado and Richard Herrera all finished 9th and are alternates for the Central Section Mas-ter Meet.

At least three Shafter High Generals wrestlers will be in action for another week as they moved forward to qualify for the Masters tournament.

Coach Rick Gabin and the Generals came into the Central Section Division II tournament with a full slate of wrestlers looking to make it through to Lemoore. Shafter had several grapplers who placed in the league tournament, giving them the chance to move on to the Division II cham-pionships.

For the second consecutive year, Shafter High was the site for the tournament that serves as a qualifier for the Masters tourna-ment Feb. 15-16 at Lemoore High School. The top placer at the divisional tournament was Rafael Zamudio, competing in the 170 lb. class. Zamudio went 1-1 on Friday, al-lowing him to move on to Saturday. He then opened the final day with a pin against Juan Perez of Corcoran

Zamudio got another pin in his next match against Sebastian Romero of Exeter. Zamudio just missed a spot in the semi-finals with a loss to Juan Alonso of Ken-nedy High School. Rafael then took on Alfred Carpenter of Kingsburg in the 5th place match. Zamudio made short work of Carpenter, getting a pin in the first period, capturing the 5th place medal and a trip to

the Masters. In the 120 lb. class, junior Christian Gar-

za took 7th place. Garza opened up the tour-nament with a 1-1 record on Friday. On Sat-urday, Garza pinned Victor Rojas of Liberty High School. Christain then lost his match with Andy Ojeda of Pioneer Valley by pin. Wrestling for a spot in the Masters tourna-ment, Garza then pinned Andrew Alejo of Kerman, stamping his ticket to Lemoore.

Nate Gonzalez was the third Shafter High wrestler to earn his spot in the Mas-ters tournament. Gonzalez also went 1-1 onFriday. On Saturday, Nate got a pin against Nick Morales of Sanger High School.Gonzalez then lost to Eric Vera of PioneerValley, knocking him into the consolation round against Dawson Hubert of Hanford. Nate pinned Hubert, setting up a match against Cal Muxlow of Kingsburg. Drop-ping the match to Muxlow, Gonzalez went up against Oscar Perez of Kennedy HighSchool for 7th place. Gonzalez defaultedthe match, ending the tournament in 8thplace, also earning him a spot in Lemoore.

There are also three additional wrestlers from Shafter who will be making the trip toLemoore. Fernando Carreno, Conner Rub-alcado and Richard Herrera all finished in 9th place in their weight divisions, makingthem alternates, allowing them to competeif any of the top eight wrestlers are unable to compete.

Hello friends, meet Shy. Shy is a gold with black shepherd mix who is about 3 years old and weighs about approximately 50 pounds. He owners surrendered this sweet girl because she kept jumping their chain length fence. We would recommend a tall fence-in yard with a gate to help keep Shy safe.

Shy has adjusted well at the shelter and has done well meeting new dogs. This girl has had a few litters and she is ready to be a single lady. When you first meet Shy, she may be a little shy at first, but with a little attention and affection, her true per-sonality comes out.

She loves to play and enjoys chas-ing after toys. Some basic training and simple commands would be great for her and help her with her confidence. If you would like to meet Shy, come out to the Shafter Animal Shelter.

If you have not already, view our home page at shaftercritters.petfinder.com. Our website will answer many questions that you may have about adopting from us. We cannot recom-mend any dog as “good with children” since there is no way to be certain that

they are safe for children. The age of the animal is an estimation that has been based on the knowledge and training of the shelter staff.

If you have further question. email [email protected] or call 661-746-2140. The shelter, 18849 Shafter Ave., is open Monday-Saturday 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Wednesdays 1-7 p.m.

PASTOR JIM NEAL“He who covers his sins (wrongdoings)

will not prosper, But whoever confesses and forsakes them Will have (fi nd) mercy.” --Proverbs 28:13

Wise King Solomon penned that tru-ism many, many years ago -- approximately 3,000 years, long before there was a NFL, Roger Goodell or any professional sports. The book of Proverbs was written for the reason of giving individuals wisdom in virtuously every aspect of life. What does that have to do with the thought of the day? Simply this: Over the last several years, dat-ing back to the steroid era of Major League Baseball and perhaps before that, grown, powerful and wealthy men have attempted to hide illegal activities. When the truth be-gan to unfold they then attempted without success to deny their involvement, and even

some would make a weak effort to blame someone else.

Is it only me, or does there seem to be a pattern unfolding -- a common thread through all of these challenging circum-stances, from illegal steroid and drug use to spousal and child abuse. The common denominator appears to be the propensity to try and “sweep” wrong doing under the rug through whatever method seems plau-sible and most believable to the public. The methods range from out and outlying to jus-tifying the wrong with whatever story fi ts. The amazing thing is that the more it hap-pens the more the common thread is applied and used.

Lest we think this is something new, shall we think again. This tendency to try and fi nagle our way out of things goes way back to the Garden of Eden and our ances-

tral father Adam. When he was caught “red handed” in his sin, he took it like a man and “blamed it on his wife.” Throughout all of recorded history, we can fi nd example after example of this dilemma of the human race. And almost without exception the “cover-up” causes more heartache than the mistake.

We seem to forget that one cover-up leads to another, and before long we forget what we said and to whom and the tangled web is soon too large and “sticky” to work our way out of the quandary. There is also an ancient teaching that says, “Beware your sin will fi nd you out.” The thought of the day and this ancient teaching should be “road signs” enough to keep us from trying to cover up a wrongdoing; however, unfortunately, it doesn’t and won’t as long as ingenious man is prowling around say-ing, “My situation is different.” It may be different, but it still looks and smells the same, doesn’t it?

Look again at the “thought,” and focus on the second part: confession and forsak-ing leads to mercy. Those who have taken that road have found out that even though there are ramifi cations for sure, most men

and women are eager to forgive and to ex-tend the olive branch leading to a second chance to make good.

After all, are we not so wired with a con-science -- when wrong is done and we knowit -- the conscience is supposed to springinto action. What ever happened to that aspect of our makeup? Lots of lying and covering-up will lead to a conscience that becomes insensitive to wrong and can evencall wrong right; the Bible refers to that as a “seared conscience,” as one that has beenrendered unresponsive by the burning of a hot iron.

Stop a moment and give your conscience a chance to catch up. Is it clear, clean andpure? Are there a couple of episodes thatneed clearing up? If so, remember to clear them up is to fi nd mercy and grace -- andisn’t that a better “neighborhood to live in? It is said that a guilty conscience is “that partof a young boy that causes him to tell to his mother -- just before his sister does.

Have a great week fi nding mercy and grace.

COMING TO COLOURS

Cans d’Arte is com-ing to the Depot Mu-seum.

With the Shafter Colours Festival ap-proaching, the Shafter Woman’s Club is again preparing for their an-nual “Canstructional” design-build compe-tition to be held the weekend of Feb. 23-24. This is a unique project to encourage artistic en-deavor and make a dif-ference by feeding the hungry.

Participants are encouraged to construct architectural structures or designs with nonperishable cans and boxes of food. Awards will be given in three categories: adult, high schoo, and elementary.

Those interested in designing a nonperishable art display can register their team with the Shafter Woman’s Club and ask for the details by email-

ing [email protected] creations will be featured the

weekend of Colours on Saturday, Feb. 23 from 11 am to 4 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 24 from 1 to 4 p.m.

The display will remain at the De-pot from February to March. After the competition, all of the food items will be donated to a local food pantry for use in the Shafter community.

Cans d’Arte feeds body, soulAvenue and Tulare Avenue. It is one of the county’s oldest recreational parks.

Mannel Park is also the site of a exercise stations, in-cluding new exercise equip-ment that was installed along the walking path around the park. Residents can walk the route and stop along the way to exercise at the dif-ferent stations. This proj-ect was made possible by the partnership of the City of Shafter and the Shafter Woman’s Club. The project was the brainchild of the Woman’s Club, which did the bulk of the leg work.

There is also Kirschen-mann Park, which features a large baseball fi eld, com-plete with sports lighting for night events. Rodriguez Park, located on the north side of Los Angeles Av-enue, features a new play-ground area, new restroom facilities, lighted basketball courts, a fenced-in soccer

fi eld and lighting. The newest park is Vet-

erans Park, located at the in-tersection of Schnaidt Street and Los Angeles Avenue. This park features open fi elds, a football fi eld with goal posts, soccer fi elds, a new playground area, picnic tables and a splash park.

Public Works Director Michael James has been studying the feasibility of adding additional basketball courts in Shafter. James said his department has a plan in place that will refurbish the existing courts at Rodriguez Park. This would include painting, resurfacing and up-dating the lighting.

James also brought up the possibility of adding courts to Mannel Park, explaining more research needs to be done to determine the feasi-bility and cost of the project. The project would include courts, backboards, rims, painted surfaces and lighting. Mayor Alvarado asked about

the possibility of also addinga tennis court to the location.

“It is a possibility and anoption, but we have to con-sider that each individual sport would need its ownspecifi c dimensions andfencing,” James responded.“For example, a tennis court needs a fence around thecourt area, instead of just theneed for space around the pe-rimeter of a basketball court.

In addition to the school teams and the Shafter Rec-reation Department leagues,Shafter boasts a number of local competitive travelingteams, including teams in bas-ketball, softball and baseball. But additional recreationaloptions are needed, accordingto Mayor Pro-Tem Lopez.

“We have a need here inShafter for more places for our kids to participate in anactivity,” he said. “We have tosupply them with an outlet to give them the exercise, physi-cal, and mental well-beingthat they deserve.”
