TECHNISCHE HANDELSONDERNEMING B.V.

FOR INDUSTRIAL GAS ENGINES

H I S T O R Y

HistoryIn 2009 Hatraco celebrated it’s 25 anniversary. During that period of time, business quickly changed from gas turbine sales in the early days to parts for industrial reciprocating gas engines. Many spark plug cables have been sold since. The cables were purchased through a number of sources, but time and time again we were faced with the limitations of buying products from vendors. In 2008 we have started up out own production line providing us an unlimited flexibility in design variety and used components.

Used MaterialsThe majority of spark plug extension applied in the cable-program are made out of PTFE (polytetrafluo-roethylene), a synthetic fluoropolymer of tetrafluoroethylene which finds numerous applications. PTFE is most well known by the DuPont brand name Teflon. PTFE is a fluorocarbon solid, as it is a high molecular weight compound consisting wholly of carbon and fluorine. Neither water and water-containing substances nor oil and oil-containing substances are wet by PTFE , as fluorocarbons demonstrate mitigated London

dispersion forces due to the high electronegativity of fluorine. It is very non-reactive, partly because of the strength of carbon–fluorine bonds, and so it is often used in con-tainers and pipe work for reactive and corrosive chemicals. Knowing this, it is obvi-ous that this material is popular to be applied for spark plug cables. PTFE solid rod or tubing material can be easily machined, allowing for many shapes and sizes, required for a proper fit in the numerous different engines models that are running throughout the world. Hatraco is applying high grade PTFE, with respect to purity and electrical insulation.

Boots and connectorsA spark plug cable may appear to be a simple part. Functionality-wise it is - it only needs to ensure proper conductivity to allow the high tension pulse coming from the coil to go the spark plug, located somewhere remotely and deep in the cylinder head. Still, there is no world wide standard for spark plug cables and one needs to take in account that the product needs to fit many different types of ignition coils and spark plugs. There is no such thing as a standard connections and for that reason we offer our cables with many different connections. As the cable is sitting on top of the plug basically unsupported, many cables are furnished with some sort of cover boot or outer-o-ring to reduce vibration and/or prevent debris falling into the spark plug well. These boots are commonly made of EPDM or Silicone rubber. Both materials are high temperature resistant and offer excellent protection from oil and many other aggressive fluids. We also see many different types of connectors, commonly terminated with copper, brass or stainless steel contacts.

INTRODUCTION

Spark Plug Cables / Unshielded secondary leadsHatraco offers a large program of unshielded spark plug cables, based on a high quality PTFE spark plug extensions. Extensions can be fitted with RFI reducing resistorized inserts. All extensions are being checked 100% on electrical conductivity and resistance value. In addition we offer budget cables made from automtive type extensions but also special “spring loaded” extensions that are used for special applications in combination with top mounted ignition coils.

Secondary RetrofitsThere is a large number of engines in the field with special OEM secondary output configurations. Some of these special designs have turned out to be unreliable and extremely expensive to replace. Hatraco has designed a number of solutions to retrofit these special set-ups into a simple and straight forward installation making use of standard, well proven products like the ignition coils from the Altronic program. We have solutions for Jenbacher 300 & 600 series, Cummins QSK, Deutz TBG and more.
