Competition Secretaries don’t look so glum!

We’re here to help

MidPhot 2018has gone on-line

MidPhot 2018 now has an online entry system. Your members can enter and upload their images themselves or you can do it for them. All we ask is that the prints come collectively as a Club in as few boxes as possible

Make sure that you read the rules as there are important changes to the Nature sections and that your members are aware of them as well.

All Entrants and Competition Secretaries PlEASE rEMEMbEr to Put A PriNtEd CoPY of Your ENtriES iN thE box AloNg with thE PriNtS.

Either the form that appears on-line when completing your entry or the email confirmation.

Competition Secretaries - Please keep Joe Bloggs’s mono prints together, then their colour, then nature. Followed by the next author, you don’t have to put the authors in alphabetical order anymore.

Mark your boxes as well as your entry forms how you will be collecting your returns at the end of the exhibition. If you are using a collection point, such as the Ducketts then please indicate this on the box with a label stating MidPhot 2018 Collection DUCKETT or for Ian Bailey label the box MidPhot 2018 Collection BAILEY. If collecting from Smethwick Club rooms then SPS. And don’t forget to notify the collectors so they are aware of whose boxes they need to take with them. More details can be found in the guidance notes on line.

Rules and some guidance notes will be sent to all club secretaries and can be found in the MCPF Newsletter and on the website.

The on-line System will be open for entries from Jan 2nd up until midnight Feb 9th (print entries have to handed in Feb 10th)

DefinitionsBlack & White Photography (Monochrome - FIAP)A black and white image is one with tones from very dark grey (black) to very clear grey (white). A black and white image toned entirely in a single colour will be able to stand in the black & white category and can be reproduced in black & white in the catalogue. On the other hand a black and white image modified by partial toning or by the addition of one colour to a part of the image becomes a colour image and should be entered in the colour category. This type of image will be reproduced in the colour pages of the catalogue.

Nature PhotographyNature photography is restricted to the use of the photographic process to depict all branches of natural history, except anthropology and archeology, in such a fashion that a well- informed person will be able to identify the subject material and certify its honest presentation. The story telling value of a photograph must be weighed more than the pictorial quality while maintaining high technical quality. Human elements shall not be present, except where those human elements are integral parts of the nature story such as nature subjects, like barn owls or storks, adapted to an environment modified by humans, or where those human elements are in situations depicting natural forces, like hurricanes or tidal waves. Scientific bands, scientific tags or radio collars on wild animals are permissible. Photographs of human created hybrid plants, cultivated plants, feral animals, domestic animals, or mounted specimens are ineligible.

Nature Pictures which have been modified but preserve the truth of the statement may be entered. Any images that show an obvious alteration cannot be entered into the nature section but can be entered into the Open sections.

Open SectionsThese are open to any form of photography and can be of any subject matter with the exception of Nature pictures unless they have been obviously altered from reality. Any Nature pictures that do not show any obvious modification cannot be entered into the Open sections.

Contemporary PhotographyMay be defined as the concept which stimulates the mind of the viewer, to interpret the message conveyed through the creative use of line, form and colour.

How to make your MCPF MidPhot entry

You can enter as an individual or your club competition secretary can enter them on your behalf. Whichever method you choose to use, please send your work collectively with your club’s. This will not only help with unpacking but with package storage and returns. Please note any packages sent as individuals will be returned with your club’s entry.

These instructions show you how to enter the titles for your Colour, Monochrome and Nature prints and image files for projected digital image (PDI) entries. You will do this for each member in turn. When you have finished reading this, click on the link below to start. You will be asked first for your email address, then your name and postal address and then to select your club from the list of MCPF clubs.

You can now enter your own images. If you are entering work on behalf of other club members and want the information to come to you then click the “No” button. You will be asked to submit your email address again, and to enter the name of the entrant, the address details will default to the original one entered, leave as they are. Submit the titles and or upload the images as before.

You will be asked to re-submit your email address, each time you want to enter details of another member. This is for security reasons, to check that you are not a robot.

A title is required for each image but it must not contain the member’s name or your club’s name. You do not need to rename the PDI files. PDI images will be projected at 1600 x 1200 pixels. If you upload an image whose dimensions are larger than this it will be resized for you. Note that when you upload an image file, the file name is used to suggest a title. If you use this suggestion, please make sure you edit it to remove any names.

Once you have finished entering the details for one person you can either go back to the start (click on list shown on left hand side of screen) or close and re-open the programme.

You do not have to put all the entries in at one time – you can stop the process at any time and return later using the link below. When you return, you will see a list of the members whose work you have entered. If you need to make a change you can select one of these, or you can click the “click here” link to add a new member’s work.

Reminder - If you have entered individually please send your prints together with any other club members work, collectively in as few a boxes as possible, this will help with the unpacking and storage of print boxes. Please note any packages sent as individuals will be returned with the rest of your club’s entry.

Competition secretaries, please pack the prints as per entry forms printed from the on-line system in author order. And please submit a copy of everyone’s entry in the box, along with any entry fees and cheques. And remember if you want your prints returned by post or courier to include the costs with your entry fees. Cheques should be made payable to “MCPF”.

MCPF ROLL OF HONOUR

TO ALL MCPF CLUB MEMBERS and SECRETARIES. The Midland Counties Photographic Federation introduced a Roll of Honour in 1996, and the first awards have been made at the subsequent Annual General Meetings. Recipients to date are listed in the current Guide and Directory. This award recognises outstanding service to the Midlands Counties Photographic Federation, and clubs are invited to nominate individuals whom they consider to have made a significant contribution. This can be work in any area, practical or administrative, for instance: lecturing, judging, setting up a service to the Federation. It does sometimes happen that work is being done without the knowledge of Council, for a variety of reasons, and we would really appreciate hearing about any person that you would like considered for this honour. Please get in touch if you would like to have a chat about this award. If your club has a member who has contributed greatly to the MCPF would you please write to the President or MCPF General Secretary, stating your case for that person. GRAHAM HODGKISS ARPS AFIAP MPAGB APAGB

Jane and the Family

would like to say a big Thank You for all the cards and letters of condolence

Since Graham passed away.

We were overwhelmed by the number of people who attended Graham’s Funeral

on Friday 19th January

and once again a big Thank You.

A big gap has been left in our lives which cannot be filled.

A book of photographs was left on a table at the Cricket Club where we went after the Funeral,

space at the back was left for people to write any memories they had of Graham.

We had a real laugh later when we read “ does God know what he’s letting himself in for “

I’m sure Graham would have appreciated that.

With love from

Jane and Family

Congratulations to Richard Brown (Sutton Coldfield PC) who in his 40th year of entering MidPhot won two major awards at this year’s competition. Richard won the Tom Prince trophy for the best Open AV and the Martin Fry trophy for the audience vote, with his sequence “In Search of Christina”. This is one of the best sequences I have seen for many years.

2018 saw the introduction of the Photo Harmony section, which is a lot more difficult to achieve, than perhaps it looks on paper. It was a beautiful sequence “Winter White” by Martin Fry (Cheltenham CC) that won the Howard and Carole Bagshaw trophy.

Throughout the well-attended day, the audience were treated to some excellent sequences (34 in total), on a variety of subjects though trains (I wonder if Dr. Beeching would ever have believed he would still be so prominent in the British consciousness) and WW2 were a popular choice of content this year. But whatever the story, we were treated to some wonderful images and beautiful music. The two light-hearted sequences will remain in the memory for a long time and Ziggy Stardust will now always be Lego man sat in a bean can for evermore.

Congratulations to all the award winners (full list can be seen overleaf). And a selection of sequences will be shown at the MidPhot Exhibition on Sunday 25th March, I would encourage you come along.

The New Year has not got off to the best of starts, with the funerals of two very contrasting characters, Graham Hodgkiss, who was larger than life and John Leadbeatter, who was quiet and self-effacing. There will be special tribute to Graham published soon. If you would like to contribute with any of your memories of Graham, please send them to [email protected]

The New MCPF Exhibition and Competition season has started with the MidPhot AV Championships, held on Jan 29th. Our thanks to Staffs AV Group who put on a flawless day, which is much appreciated by the entrants and audience alike. It was a good day, with lots to see and enjoy. Congratulations to all the winners, a full report follows in this Newsletter.

MidPhot main exhibition is open for entries, I know that the new system is taking some getting used to but I’m sure you will find it less labour intensive than the old manual system. From an organiser’s perspective and as one who enters work for their club, it is simpler to collate the work not having to worry if it’s all in alphabetical order, and not to have fill entry form after entry form. At the other end, we can save a lot of time and manpower when unpacking, as we can now generate the labels as we require them and not have to pre-print and manually fill in club numbers. Also won’t have the risk of accidentally missing someone’s entry. There will not be the long delay in getting your results, as we will not have wait so long for all the other jobs to be done before we can photocopy your sheets and post them out. I’m sure we will all get used to it.To those who have entered, I wish you every success and look forward to seeing you at the exhibition, don’t forget to write it in your diaries, Weds 21st to Sun 25th. Posters and information will be sent out to all clubs.

We have had some enquires as to the Panel Exhibition part of MidPhot. As we announced last year, this has been moved from the main exhibition to be an Exhibition on its own, though still classed as MidPhot. Confused! To refresh your memories, it was a close call to drop the panel competition in MidPhot altogether. Everyone from the judges, to the organisers, to the entrants could not agree what “Creative” meant, to have dropped the word Creative, could have opened the flood gates but we could not accommodate any more than 7 acceptances without having the knock-on effect of accepting fewer individual prints. We thought the best option was to have a separate exhibition but still use the MidPhot banner and trophy. The exhibition will be held at the Old Schoolhouse in October with the closing date to coincide with the September General Meeting. Details have yet to be finalised and will be published as soon as they are available.

Congratulations to MCPF clubs in the PAGB Print and PDI Cups, and to those members who won awards.

I hope to see you at either our meetings or exhibitions or at your club.

John Leadbeatter learnt his photography in the RAF whilst on National Service, and was a very keen sports fan and, certainly for me, he will be remembered for his photographs of athletics taken at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham. John was a gentle man, devoted to his late wife Jill and his family. He set up his own very successful electronics business, working with some very prominent clients such as the BBC. He was a member of Walsall PS, Handsworth PS and Smethwick PS. In 2005 he was awarded APAGB, nominated

by Walsall PS, for all his time and efforts in turning the club around and saving it from closing. In 2010 he was enrolled onto the MCPF Roll of Honour. John was elected to Council in 2000, but before that he helped out at many of the MCPF events, and was the go-to man if anything broke down. Fortunately he was present at the inaugural PAGB Print Championships held at Pershore Agricultural college. When the slide projector jammed, yes the slide projector, (in those days clubs had to send copies of their prints on slides, for the audience to view), John was there to save the day. John was Print and Slide Championship organiser from 2001 to 2009, and even after he had retired from that post, he helped Roger P with the event until he retired from council in 2012. I’m sure he would have continued much longer but for the demands of looking after Jill, who had developed Huntingtons disease, and the toll this was having on his own health. But John continued to be an active member of his clubs and was seen most Thursdays at Smethwick, along with some of his closest colleagues, sharing a bottle or two of red wine, putting photography and the world to rights.

One abiding memory I have of John was when he was hanging the award winning images on the front board at Smethwick, including one of his own of a long jumper. He suddenly cried out “I will have to replace this print before we open on Wednesday!” John could not have been happy with the final position of the athlete’s feet and had done some manoeuvring of said feet. But on closer inspection of the print, he discovered that he had forgotten to clone over some of the image and the athlete had ended up with three feet! And this had gone through judging and been awarded a top award!

Ron J Poppleton APAGB DPAGB

Ron was born in Birmingham on the 24th October 1923. He first became interested in photography in the early forties eventually joining Handsworth Photographic Society in 1947 where the pictures he often saw in competitions left him full of admiration of the photographers concerned. Landscape work was very popular, and being a person fond of the countryside and particularly the Lake District, they appealed immediately. One of the members that produced what he thought were fine landscapes was Albert Pinfield. Although a total novice, he became determined to try his hand and succeed.

After building an enlarger out of an old plate camera, using an old Rolleicord (bartered with cigarettes in Germany) his search for landscapes commenced. He did not do very well at all. However as friendships developed within the club, a member who had a car arranged a Whitsuntide: holiday break in Snowdonia and joining the group was Albert Pinfield. One day on a walk, the group came across an attractive scene. Pictures were taken and the group continued the walk. After a while the members realised that Albert was not with them so they retraced their steps and eventually met him. The lighting had not been quite good enough at the time, when the members had made their exposures, for Albert - so he had waited until it was. Ron produced his print of that scene for the next competition, a winner surely!! However, when Albert’s print was shown it was so very different. This had been Ron’s first lesson that in landscape photography you need the right lighting, a good foreground and patience advice which he was never to forget.

Landscape photography to Ron was to endeavour to capture the changing moods of the countryside. He was a traditionalist with landscapes – a bit ‘old fashioned’ according to some judges. But he did his photography to please him, and not the judges. To try and produce a print which was pleasing to look at, with half-tones, a slightly warm image, and one you could live with hanging on the wall of the lounge in your home. He did however start to produce outstanding landscape pictures, and became dedicated worker for Handsworth Photographic Society. Black and White prints were taken over by colour, and for many years Ron organised slides to be shown at the close, of the evening programmes on BBC TV. Along with Fred Rea and Tom Prince they put together, slide shows of travels throughout the country and they had prepared accompanying music.

The club had a prestigious Annual Exhibition, with prints submitted from all over the world, and Ron was always deeply involved with this. His interest also took him to serve on the Midland Counties Photographic Federation. In the course of time, both Handsworth Photographic Society and the Midland Counties Photographic Society honoured him for the tremendous amount of work he did for both institutions. In 1993 he was awarded the APAGB in recognition of meritorious service over many years within the PAGB community of member Federations and affiliated Clubs. The MCPF introduced the Roll of Honour in 1996 to mark outstanding service by members to the Federation and Ron was among the first group of people to be placed on the list in 1996.

In 1996 his first wife, Beryl died, and a life on his own would not have been good for Ron, and happily he was rescued by his present wife Jill and moved to Tetbury where he joined Gloucester Camera Club. During the forty nine years Ron was a regular member of Handsworth Photographic Society apart from the various club activities he was involved with he also served as President in 1958 & 1959 also in 1975 & 1976 a role he undertook with great distinction. On the 28th January 1978 Ron was made Life Vice President of HPS for the many years of dedicated service to the society over a period of some thirty years this was an honour which gave him a tremendous amount of pleasure.

Ron Poppleton, President of Handsworth Photographic Society is shown presenting the Ruth Handley Memorial Trophy to W.T. Gay, President of the Midland Counties Photographic Federation at the opening of the Society’s 27th International Exhibition.

In 2016 the president of France appointed him, along with other “D” Day veterans to the rank of Chevalier in the Order National dela Legion d’honneur. Ron was not always willing to speak about his experiences whilst serving with the Dorset Regiment during the War but the honour he received was very well deserved and he really appreciated it.

Sadly Ron died on Thursday 12th October 2017. Everyone who met Ron said that he was always cheerful, always a pleasure to meet, always willing to help and be involved, always ready with a story. Ron could be best described as one of life’s true gentlemen.

Sincere thanks to members of the Midland Photographic Societies and his nephew Derek Poppleton for their support in providing the historical background information.
