p r a i s e f o r The Character of Virtue

“What happens when one remarkable moral theologian asks another one to be godfather to his newborn son? This book is the surpris-ing, original, and powerfully moving answer. Seeing Stanley Hauerwas’s treatment of the virtues through the eyes of Sam Wells’s grow-ing son, reflecting one minute on vast reaches of truth and the next on close-up political and personal challenges, all with a light touch and characteristic Texan grit—this is a treat. A book to read and savor . . . and perhaps to give to one’s own teenage godchild.”

— N. T. Wright

“The church should be the community where we’re honest that we can’t raise children on our own. The myth of the nuclear family is graciously pierced by the sacrament of bap-tism; the godparent is the tangible hands and feet of this reality. Hauerwas’s marvelous letters in The Character of Virtue are not only wisdom for those growing in the faith; they are also a model for how all of us can come alongside parents in the hard good work of raising children in the faith.”

— James K. A. Smith

The Character of VirtueLetters to a GodsonStanley Hauerwas

With an introduction by Samuel Wells

Candid wisdom from a renowned theologian on living well

From the fairy godmother’s pumpkin coach to Herr Drosselmeyer’s nutcracker, godparents have long been associated with good gifts. In The Character of Virtue theologian and ethicist Stanley Hauerwas offers his real-life godson something far more precious than toys or trinkets—the gift of hard-won wisdom on life and the process of maturing.

In each of sixteen letters—sent on the occasion of Laurence Wells’s baptism and every year thereafter—Hauerwas contemplates a specific virtue and its meaning for a child growing year by year in the Christian faith. Writing on kindness, courage, humility, joy, and more, Hauerwas distills centuries of religious thinking and decades of self-reflection into heartfelt personal epistles that are both timely and timeless.

An introduction by Samuel Wells—Laurence’s father and Hauerwas’s friend—tells the story behind these letters and offers sage insight into what a godparent is and can be.

“Bound to become a classic, Stanley Hauerwas’s wise, gentle, and compassionate letters to his godson are, in fact, timeless teachings from a great spiritual master to all of us.”

— James Martin, SJauthor of The Jesuit Guide to (Almost) Everything

“Emerson thought that achieving aversion from conformity might require the enabling attentiveness of an older friend. These letters show how a godparent can embody the same emancipatory, upbuild-ing aspirations in a distinctively Christian idiom, exhibiting exactly the virtues that it sets itself to discuss.”

— Stephen Mulhallauthor of On Film

Stanley Hauerwas is Gilbert T. Rowe Professor Emer- itus of Divinity and Law at Duke University. One of America’s best known and most highly regarded living theologians, he is the author of many notable works, including Resident Aliens, A Community of Character, Living Gently in a Violent World, and Hannah’s Child.

“When you make a list, if you stay with it and take it slowly, take it seriously but playfully,

give yourself plenty of permission to put down whatever comes up, you begin to clarify your

values, your concerns, the direction your life is taking, your relationship to your inner voice,

your humor, your secrets. You discover the larger things that lists can reveal.”

Make a ListHow a Simple Practice Can Change

Our Lives and Open Our HeartsMarilyn McEntyre

What if writing lists could radically transform your life?

From the ancient book of Numbers to the latest click- bait listicle, list-writing has been a routine feature of human experience. Shopping lists. To-do lists. Guest lists. Bucket lists. Lists are everywhere you look.

But what if our lists did more than just remind us to buy milk and take out the trash? What if the practice of list-making could help us discover who we truly are and even point us to our deepest joys, hopes, and desires?

In Make a List teacher, writer, and wordsmith Marilyn McEntyre shows readers how list-writing can open doors to personal discovery and spiritual growth. Deepening her reflections with abundant writing prompts and real-life examples, McEntyre turns the humble list into a work of art—one that has the power to clear minds, open hearts, and change lives.

“Marilyn McEntyre reminds me of the power of language— to heal and instruct us, to challenge and shape us.”

— Shauna Niequistauthor of Bread & Wine and Savor

“It was only a week ago that Make a List made its way to me. I opened it immediately, as I do any new Marilyn McEntyre book, and began both soaking in its wisdom and applying myself to the suggested practices.  Just one week into living with Make a List, I can already tell that this small book, which both invites me into a new practice and reframes one of my existing daily habits as spiritual practice, will be life-giving and edifying.” — Lauren F. Winner

“Robert Hudson’s revealing ‘parallel biography’ shows how two of the most prolific and influ-ential figures in the 1960s, both perpetually restless spiritual pilgrims, shared a passion for prophetic poetry, an opposition to the war in Vietnam, and a boundless inquisitiveness. . . . Hudson connects dots that other Merton scholars have overlooked.” — Steve Rabey

“A warm and vivid picture of two very different but unexpectedly related countercultural icons in that extraordinary mid-sixties moment of hope and imaginative enlargement. This book enables us to see some of the deep currents of that era and to reacquaint ourselves with two great, unclassifiable figures.”

— Rowan Williams

“Artfully demonstrates how the minds of two individual cultural icons merge with a message that all the world needs to hear. Difficult to put down once you open the first page and begin to read.” — John W. Whitehead

“A gloriously detailed account of two solitary yet world-famous artists in a decade that still bears surprising fruit. Hudson’s book takes you on an unexpected journey with Merton and Dylan—an enlightening, challenging, and refreshing hiatus from the demands of our digital age.”

The Monk’s Record PlayerThomas Merton, Bob Dylan,

and the Perilous Summer of 1966Robert Hudson

Foreword by David Dalton

The story of a monk, a minstrel, and the music that brought them together

In 1965 Thomas Merton fulfilled a twenty-four-year-old dream and went to live as a hermit beyond the walls of his Trappist monastery. Seven months later, after a secret romance with a woman half his age, he was in danger of losing it all. Yet on the very day that his abbot uncovered the affair, Merton found solace in an unlikely place—the songs of Bob Dylan, who, as fate would have it, was experiencing his own personal and creative crises during the summer of 1966.

In this parallel biography of two countercultural icons, Robert Hudson plumbs the depths of Dylan’s influence on Merton’s life and writing, recounts each man’s interactions with the woman who linked them together—Joan Baez—and shows how each transcended his immediate troubles and went on to new heights of spiritual and artistic genius. Readers will discover in this fascinating book a story of creativity and crisis, burnout and redemption, in the tumultuous era of 1960s America.

“You may think, as I at first did, that pairing a Utopian hermit monk and a demon-haunted rock star is just plain perverse or at the very least willfully paradoxical. But there you’d be dead wrong. . . . In the end it’s Bob Hudson’s love for Thomas Merton and Bob Dylan that’s the alchemical fire that makes [this book] work. As curious as this cockamamie pairing is, The Monk’s Record Player is a meditation on inspiration, contact highs, and the unknowable workings of the cosmos.”

— David Dalton ( from foreword)

Robert Hudson is a recognized Bob Dylan scholar, a member of the International Thomas Merton Society, and a veteran editor who has worked with a number of best-selling authors, including Philip Yancey, Walter Wangerin Jr., Leonard Sweet, and Lee Strobel. Who God Says You AreA Christian Understanding of Identity

Klyne R. Snodgrass

Biblical answers to humanity’s most basic and pressing question

WHO ARE YOU?For respected New Testament scholar Klyne

Snodgrass, this is the most important question a person can ask—the question from which everything else in life flows. Other questions follow: What made you who you are? Who gets to say who you are? And—perhaps most vital—Who does GOD say you are?

In this book Snodgrass offers wise guidance to all who are wrestling with such universal human questions. He examines nine factors—including one’s body, personal history, commitments, and boundaries—that shape human identity, and he expertly draws out what the Bible tells us about who God says we are, how we fit within God’s purposes, and how our God-given identity can and must impact the way we live our lives.

“Klyne Snodgrass looks at one of the oldest questions of humanity—Who am I?—and brings wisdom that is at once ancient and fresh. To read this book is to better be prepared to understand yourself.” — John Ortberg

Incarnational MissionBeing with the World

Samuel Wells

“With,” says Samuel Wells, “is the most important word in the Christian faith.” In this compelling follow-up to Incarnational Ministry: Being with the Church, Wells explores what it means for mission-minded Christians and churches to be with the world.

Drawing on the Gospels, Acts, and personal insights gleaned from his more than two decades in ministry, Wells discusses such subjects as being with the lapsed, being with seekers, being with those of other faiths, being with the hostile, being with institutions, and being with the excluded. His vivid narratives and wise reflections will help Christian readers better under-stand how to be with all kinds of people outside the church, both individually and collectively.

“Being with Sam Wells, in person or through his writing, is a journey of profound discovery and joy. It is a discovery of the power of the gospel, of how to navigate this world faithfully and well, and of seeing familiar issues in remarkably fresh ways. . . . This book shines with the wisdom we have come to expect from Wells.” — L. Gregory Jones

Duke Divinity School

“Jesus lived radically and authentically in the world, so a faith that has anything to do with him will be radically incarna-tional. Sam Wells knows this profoundly from his public ministry in academia and now in the heart of one of the world’s great cities. His thinking is grounded in Scripture and informed by his experience as a pastor. This fine book is a delight to read, and I recommend it highly.”

Christian Hospitality and Muslim Immigration in an Age of Fear

Matthew KaemingkForeword by James K. A. Smith

Millions of Muslims have migrated to Europe and North America in the last fifty years. Their arrival has ignited fierce public debates on both sides of the Atlantic about religious freedom and tolerance, terror - ism and security, gender and race, and much more. How can Christians best respond to this situation?

In this book theologian and ethicist Matthew Kaemingk offers a thought-provoking Christian perspective. Rejecting both fearful nationalism and romantic multiculturalism, Kaemingk makes the case for a third way—a Christian pluralism that is commit-ted to both the historic Christian faith and the public rights, dignity, and freedom of Islam.

“This is a wonderfully written, ambitious, and urgent work of theology, ethics, and political theory. It rings with unusual vitality and passion.” — Shadi Hamid

author of Islamic Exceptionalism: How the Struggle over Islam Is Reshaping the World

“A pathbreaking, theologically rich Christian intervention into contemporary public debates over the place of Muslims in Western societies. . . . Matthew Kaemingk has pulled off a feat many would have thought impossible.”

— Jonathan Chaplinauthor of Multiculturalism: A Christian Retrieval

“Kaemingk is a winsome guide through difficult terrain. He avoids the easy dead-ends—assimilate or stay out—that too often shape responses to the real challenges of Muslim immi-gration in Western democracies. . . . Along the way, he stays grounded in real-world experience while never losing sight of basic convictions. The result: A book that is both timely and compelling.” — Kevin den Dulk

I Pledge AllegianceA Believer’s Guide to Kingdom Citizenship

in Twenty-First-Century AmericaDavid Crump

Foreword by Soong-Chan Rah

Bitter partisan conflict. Economic injustice. Ethical corruption. Even a cursory glance over daily news head-lines shows a stark contrast between the American political state and the kingdom of heaven. Where does the Christian’s ultimate allegiance lie?

In I Pledge Allegiance David Crump issues a clarion call to Jesus’s twenty-first-century disciples, stirring them up to heed God’s word and live out their kingdom citi - zenship here on earth. Examining the ethical teachings of Jesus and his apostles in the New Testament and using real-world examples to illustrate the vital issues at stake, Crump challenges Christians to embrace the radical, counterintuitive, upside-down way of Jesus.

“This book meets two needs. The first is for a biblically based analysis of the ethical issues of our day aimed at an educated lay audience. The second is for a book by an evangelical Christian that challenges evangelicals to take Jesus seriously in living out their citizenship.” — William T. Cavanaugh

DePaul University

“Crump is a New Testament scholar who has the courage to write a book in Christian ethics that explores how Christians must learn how to negotiate a world in which they are no longer in control.” — Stanley Hauerwas

Duke Divinity School

“A powerful, passionate plea to American Christians to follow Jesus rather than conform to a broken culture. . . . Biblical, urgent, provocative. A must-read.” — Ronald J. Sider

Jonathan EdwardsAn Introduction to His Thought

Oliver D. Crisp and Kyle C. Strobel

Jonathan Edwards (1703–1758) has long been recognized as one of the preeminent thinkers in the early Enlightenment and a major figure in the history of American Christianity.

In this accessible one-volume text, leading Edwards experts Oliver Crisp and Kyle Strobel introduce readers to the formidable mind of Jonathan Edwards as they survey key theological and philosophical themes in his thought, including his doctrine of the Trinity, his philo- sophical theology of God and creation, and his under- standing of the atonement and salvation.

More than two centuries after his death, theologians and historians alike are finding the larger-than-life Edwards more interesting than ever. Crisp and Strobel’s concise yet comprehensive guide will help students of this influential eighteenth-century revivalist preacher to understand why.

“This is an outstanding introduction to the theology of Jona-than Edwards. Drawing upon the latest scholarship and a mastery of Edwards’s writings, it is well written, comprehen-sive, and concise. I expect it to be widely used in the classroom and to become a standard point of reference in the field.”

— George HunsingerPrinceton Theological Seminary

“Written by two of the most astute contemporary commenta-tors on Jonathan Edwards, this volume performs a valuable service by focusing on salient topics in Edwards’s philosophi-cal thought that are currently engaging the wider community.”

Redeeming Transcendence in the ArtsBearing Witness to the Triune God

Jeremy Begbie

It is widely believed that there is something transcen-dent about the arts, that they can awaken a profound sense of awe, wonder, and mystery, of something “beyond” this world. Many argue that this opens up fruitful opportunities for conversation with those who may have no use for conventional forms of Christianity.

Jeremy Begbie—a leading voice on theology and the arts—in this book employs a biblical, Trinitarian imagi- nation to show how Christian involvement in the arts can (and should) be shaped by a vision of God’s tran- scendence revealed in the person of Jesus Christ. After critiquing some current writing on the subject, Begbie goes on to offer rich resources to help readers engage constructively with the contemporary cultural moment even as they bear witness to the otherness and uncon-tainability of the triune God of love.

“This book is a revelation. Jeremy Begbie has distilled much of modern theological aesthetics—and has done so with a sensitiv-ity that is alert to the realities of a practicing artist. I feel both chastened and emboldened by his thoughts.”

— Christian Wimanpoet, editor, essayist

“Brilliant theological writing that illumines our cultural setting and challenges readers to receive the arts with newly opened eyes and ears.” — Richard B. Hays

scholar at Duke Divinity School

“Here is Jeremy Begbie at his best—full of theological wisdom and aspiration, with abundant artistic inspiration. A stellar guidebook for our complex journey of art, faith, and theology; a must-read for the church’s navigation into culture.”

Remembrance, Communion, and HopeRediscovering the Gospel at the Lord’s Table

J. Todd BillingsForeword by Gerald L. Sittser

“Celebrating the Lord’s Supper,” says award-winning author and theologian J. Todd Billings, “can change our lives.” In this book Billings shows how a renewed theology and practice of the Lord’s Supper can lead Christians to rediscover the full richness and depth of the gospel. He develops a vibrant, biblical, distinctly Reformed sacra- mental theology and explores how it might apply within a variety of church contexts.

At once strikingly new and deeply traditional, Remembrance, Communion, and Hope will surprise and challenge readers, inspiring them to a new understand-ing of—and appreciation for—the embodied, Christ-disclosing drama of the Lord’s Supper.

“Todd Billings has done it again. In the clear and heartfelt prose we have come to expect, he calls the church to renewal through deep engagement with the Lord’s Supper as the ‘true icon’ of the good news of Jesus Christ, the form of the gospel that we can taste and see.” — Martha Moore-Keish

Columbia Theological Seminary

“A rich, thick, pastoral, and theologically sensitive approach. . . . The Lord’s Supper needs to be baptized into the Bible’s most significant texts as well as into the riches of the deep traditions of the church. Todd Billings does just that!”

— Scot McKnightNorthern Seminary

“Billings here challenges churches in many confessional tradi-tions to take up his Reformed catholic wager to theologize and see that the Lord’s Supper is good. . . . The contents page sets the table, the chapters serve up the main courses, and the conclusion brings this theological feast to a sumptuous end.”

— Kevin J. VanhoozerTrinity Evangelical Divinity School

Dying and the VirtuesMatthew Levering

In this book Matthew Levering explores nine key virtues needed to die (and live) well: love, hope, faith, penitence, gratitude, solidarity, humility, surrender, and courage.

Retrieving and engaging scriptural, theological, and contemporary resources ranging from the book of Job to present-day medical science, Levering journeys through the various stages and challenges of the dying process, beginning with the fear of annihilation and continuing through repentance and gratitude, suffering and hope, before arriving finally at the courage needed to say goodbye to one’s familiar world.

“I love this book! In Dying and the Virtues Matthew Lever-ing explores the path of discipleship in life’s final chapter with an acute mind and an attentive heart. . . . Gives a compelling theological portrait of how the triune God is at work even amidst fear, suffering, and loss on our mortal journey, bring-ing life through the crucified and risen Lord.”

— J. Todd BillingsWestern Theological Seminary

“This is a rich and sophisticated ars moriendi for our time, drawn from the storehouse of the Christian tradition that Levering has been so profoundly exploring over the past years. . . . His focus upon the divine graces of Christian virtue now shaping the fullness of living and dying in Christ provides extraordinary fruit.” — Ephraim Radner

Wycliffe College, University of Toronto

Preaching AdverbiallyF. Russell Mitman

Foreword by Gordon W. Lathrop

Christian preaching obviously entails the sermon, but in reality it involves much more. Preaching happens when the entire worshiping congregation gathers to speak and sing, pray and listen, eat and drink, bless and baptize. Preaching at root is a dynamic event that is best captured not in adjectives but in adverbs.

In Preaching Adverbially pastor and teacher Russell Mitman shows how eleven select adverbs—biblically, contextually, invitationally, doxologically, and others—serve to identify what essentially happens in Christian preach - ing. Each chapter draws on scriptural paradigms, liturgical and musical forms, the insights of scholars and teachers, and Mitman’s own rich experience. His purpose is for these adverbs to become practical, revitalizing guides for all who are called to proclaim the Word of God within the framework of Christian worship.

“Russell Mitman brings to his discussion the wisdom of many good years of pastoral experience and much critical reflection on his wide and informed reading. This well-crafted study is an invitation to think again in a fresh way about preaching. . . . Winsome and compelling.” — Walter Brueggemann

Columbia Theological Seminary

“Mitman’s informed reflections on homiletical and liturgical arts are simply a delight to read. At times he is the wise story-telling pastoral theologian, or the sensitive presider conducting liturgy, or the preacher-poet rendering God’s Word. For him preaching and worship are one.” — Paul Scott Wilson

University of Toronto

F. Russell Mitman has served as a parish pastor and as conference minister for the Pennsylvania Southeast Conference of the United Church of Christ. He is the author of several books on preaching and worship, including Worship in the Shape of Scripture.

For the Gospel’s SakeThe Rise of Wycliffe Bible Translators and

the Summer Institute of LinguisticsBoone Aldridge

Foreword by Bob Creson

The two-sided mission agency comprising Wycliffe Bible Translators and the Summer Institute of Lin - guistics is a paradox that begs explanation. The scientific Summer Institute of Linguistics has worked in many countries around the world to translate the Scriptures, develop unwritten languages, and educate indigenous communities. At the same time, Wycliffe Bible Translators has been one of the largest, fastest growing, and most controversial evangelical Christian movements during the last century.

In this wide-ranging study Boone Aldridge—a reli - gious historian and twenty-year insider at WBT-SIL—looks back at the organization’s early years, from its inception in 1934 to the death of its visionary founder, William Cameron Townsend, in 1982. He situates the iconic institution within the evolving landscape of mid-twentieth-century evangelicalism, examines its complex and occasionally confusing strategies and policies, and investigates the factors that led, despite persistent criticism from many sides, to its remarkable rise to prominence.

“A thorough and intelligently presented study. It proves that the more closely we examine American fundamentalism and evangelicalism, the more fascinating and unpredictable the story becomes. . . . There is a remarkable second generation of evangelical studies emerging just now, and this book is one of the best.” — Joel Carpenter

author of Revive Us Again: The Reawakening of American Fundamentalism

Boone Aldridge has served with Wycliffe Bible Translators and SIL International in both Africa and the United States since 1996. He holds a PhD in history from the University of Stirling in Scotland.

The Story of Latino Protestants in the United States

Juan Francisco MartínezForeword by Justo L. González

This groundbreaking book by Juan Francisco Martínez provides the first major historical overview of Latino Protestantism in the United States from the early nineteenth century to the present.

Beginning with a description of the diverse Latino Protestant community and a summary of his own historiographical approach, Martínez examines six main periods in the history of American Latino Protestantism, paying special attention to such key issues as migration patterns, immigration policies, enculturation, and assimilation. He concludes by outlining the challenges currently facing Latino Protestants in the United States and considering what Latino Protestantism might look like in the future.

“People continue to associate Latino Christian identity as primarily Roman Catholic, but Martínez’s work highlights it as also Protestant—and significantly so. Given how the story of Latino/a Protestants has been relatively understated, this book fills a major void.” — Daniel Castelo

Seattle Pacific University and Seminary

“For far too long, the rich contributions of Hispanic Protes-tants in the United States have been ignored. Beyond a facile caricature of Latino Protestantism, Martínez’s narrative is a necessary and powerful unearthing of the deep histories and diverse contributions of one of the fastest growing and most influential groups in American Christianity.”

— Gabriel SalgueroNational Latino Evangelical Coalition

Juan Francisco Martínez is professor of Hispanic studies and pastoral leadership at Fuller Theological Seminary. A fifth-generation American Latino Protes-tant himself, he is a recognized expert on the history of the movement.

Participating in God’s MissionA Theological Missiology for the Church in America

Craig Van Gelder and Dwight J. ZscheileForeword by John R. Franke

This book explores how the church has engaged—and should engage—the American context at large. Craig Van Gelder and Dwight Zscheile review and critique the long, complex, and contested history of Christian mission in America from the beginning of the colonial era to the present day, finally suggesting what participating in the triune God’s mission may look like in an uncertain tomorrow.

“The parsing of the Christendom legacy provided here is a rich resource for further explo-ration of what it means, biblically and theologically, to be God’s witnessing people in the North Atlantic mission fields. This a welcome and challenging expansion and deepening of the missional discourse.” — Darrell Guder, Princeton Seminary

Craig Van Gelder is professor emeritus of congregational mission at Luther Seminary, St. Paul, Minnesota. Dwight J. Zscheile is associate professor of congregational mission and leadership at Luther Seminary. Both of them serve as consultants with churches and other faith-based organizations.

This Incredibly Benevolent ForceThe Holy Spirit in Reformed Theology and Spirituality

Cornelis van der KooiForeword by Daniel Castelo

In this book leading Reformed theologian Cornelis van der Kooi examines the relationship of the Holy Spirit to Jesus Christ. He demonstrates how a fuller understanding of the interplay between Christology and pneumatology can encourage the Christian church to have open eyes and ears for the inbreaking of God’s “incredibly benevolent force” into the emptiness of today’s world.

“How do we know that the Holy Spirit is an incredibly benevolent force? Cornelis van der Kooi has a compelling answer: Jesus Christ. He develops this answer with unusual insight and clarity. A truly enjoyable read for students and seasoned theologians alike.”

— Frank D. Macchia, Vanguard University

Powers, Principalities, and the SpiritBiblical Realism in Africa and the West

Esther E. Acolatse

Among the many factors that separate churches in the West from those of the global South, there may be no greater difference than their respective attitudes toward supernatural “powers and principalities.” In this groundbreaking follow- up to For Freedom or Bondage? African theologian Esther Acolatse bridges the enormous hermeneutical gap not only between the West and global Christianity but also between the West and its own biblical-theological heritage.

“Acolatse’s book goes to the core problem of the church today: the church is fleeing from the Holy Spirit in its engagement with the world and interpretation of Scripture. With pene- trating insight, searing candor, and unflinching loyalty to Scripture, she wields the double-edged sword of biblical realism and African Christian spirituality to execute modern and postmodern theologies that have contributed to this problem. . . . Eye-opening.”

Spirit HermeneuticsReading Scripture in Light of Pentecost

Craig S. KeenerForeword by Amos Yong

“A compelling guide to reading Scripture experientially, eschatologically, and missionally. Craig Keener resources the Pentecostal tradition, including its global breadth, to guide readers on how to draw from the Spirit, how to develop disciplined reading habits, how to understand debates about interpretation, and how to dutifully get the most out of the text. This book is nothing less than hermeneutics with holy fire!” — Michael F. Bird

Ridley College, Melbourne

“Some may wonder if a new, fresh look at biblical hermeneutics is truly possible. Keener demonstrates that it is. He brings his scholarly biblical expertise and mastery of secondary literature together with his deep conviction that the experience of the Spirit should shape a Christian (not only a Pentecostal) reading of Scripture. . . . A wide range of readers will discover in Spirit Hermeneutics much to engage with and ponder.”

For Better, for WorseStories of the Wives of Early Pastors of the Christian Reformed Church

Janet Sjaarda Sheeres

“These fascinating, assiduously researched profiles of the first ten Christian Reformed ministers’ wives provide new insights into the denomination’s early existence, its tight social networks both internally and with the Reformed Church in America, and the condi-tions these women met and sacrificially endured. Their stories need to be told and deserve our sober appreciation.” — James A. De Jong

Calvin Theological Seminary

“Absent from existing histories, these Dutch immigrant women lived lives marked by hardship and loss, labor and fortitude, birth and death. By focusing on the experience of women, Sheeres adds another dimension to our understanding of the history of the Chris-tian Reformed Church—one in which masculine ambition, human foibles, congregational squabbles, and the sacrificial labor of women take center stage and challenge us to rethink the origins of the Christian Reformed Church in America.”

Janet Sjaarda Sheeres is former president of the Association for the Advancement of Dutch-American Studies. Her other books include The Not-So-Promised Land: The Dutch in Amelia County, Virginia, 1868–1880.

This new series collects the best and most trusted Eerdmans commentaries from years gone by in a format that will make them available to readers for years to come. Some of the ECBC volumes were originally published in major commentary series, others as freestanding books. Some were first published many decades ago, others more recently.

Though written over the years for various levels of readers, the Eerdmans Classic Biblical Commentaries all have this in common: pastors, scholars, and serious students of the Bible continue to read them, study them, and rely on them to help unlock the meaning and message of the Scriptures.

The Gospel of JohnIntroduction, Exposition, and Notes

F. F. Bruce

In this classic commentary on the Gospel of John, first published in 1983, F. F. Bruce leads readers through the rich and complex words of John the Evangelist with a careful verse-by-verse exposition of the Gospel’s original text, its historical context, and its ongoing relevance for the Christian life.

F. F. Bruce (1910–1990) was Rylands Professor of Biblical Criticism and Exegesis at the University of Manchester, England. Author of numerous commentaries and other books, he served as general editor of the NICNT series from 1962 to 1990.

The Books of Haggai and MalachiPieter A. Verhoef

Originally published in 1987 as part of the New International Commentary on the Old Testament series, this commentary by Pieter Verhoef offers a thorough exegesis and exposition of Haggai and Malachi and highlights the ongoing relevance of these prophets' messages for the Christian church.

Pieter A. Verhoef (1914–2013) was professor emeritus of Old Testament at the University of Stellenbosch, South Africa, and the author of numerous books and articles in the field of biblical studies.

RomansA Shorter Commentary

C. E. B. Cranfield

First published in 1985, this book offers an accessible, nontechnical abridgement of C. E. B. Cranfield’s magisterial two-volume International Critical Commentary on Romans—which N. T. Wright once called “the finest work on Romans to appear this century” and F. F. Bruce hailed as “well worthy to take its place alongside the really great commentaries on Romans.”

C. E. B. Cranfield (1915–2015) was a leading British New Testament scholar who served as an army chaplain in World War II and as a minister before teaching theology for thirty years at Durham University (1950–1980).
