NOBODY’S PERFECT IS A PLACE WHERE PARENTS CAN: MEET with other parents of young children SHARE questions, concerns and ideas about being a parent LEARN about child development, safety, health & behaviour DISCUSS real-life parenting situations WORK together with the support of a trained facilitator DISCOVER positive ways of parenting

2012 – 2013 showed continued growth in the

Nobody’s Perfect Program Delivery!

This past year 592 parents were reported* having participated in the Nobody’s Perfect Parent program either in a group, or one to one setting

30 different organizations throughout the province delivered the program

98 parent programs were reported being held 64 groups and 34 one to one

2012 – 2013 saw an increase in Facilitator Training

across the province. There were 7 held with only 2 in Winnipeg. Focus was on training in First Nation Communities and for Rural Parent/Child Coalitions

Greatest successes this year for NPP Manitoba in 2012 – 2013 are the partnerships with the Parent Child Coalitions and the First Nations Communities plus the special projects funding that were awarded. (2 by the Public Health Agency of Canada and the other by Healthy Child Manitoba.) See page 6 for details!

*it is important to note that not all programs are reported to the provincial office and therefore are not included in this report

HIGHLIGHTS NPP Annual Report

2012-2013

201

NPP was developed jointly in the early 1980s by the Atlantic Office of the Health Promotion Directorate of Health and Welfare Canada and the Departments of Health of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland and Labrador. It is now offered all across Canada. In Manitoba, this program has operated since 1988. Nobody’s Perfect Parenting is successful because it is part of an evaluated health promotion approach aimed at supporting the diverse needs of parents and young children, particularly those with limited access to resources. Chili, Dominican Republic and Japan all use NPP because it is a community-based program designed to support the development of healthy children by increasing the confidence, skills, knowledge and support of and for parents. Germany has recognized it as Best Practice.

Average length of program:

2.5 hrs x 7 wks

From a parent feedback sheet after they attended Nobody’s Perfect:

I liked: “the open communication and no judgment” I did not like: “that it ended”

NEWS FROM NPP NATIONAL OFFICE Regular telephone conference meetings between the national office at the Public Health Agency of Canada and provincial/territorial coordinators took place throughout the year. Parent kit revisions and illustration are still being made. Translations in French and 6 other languages are also being made. Plans to promote the program and the new look are being made for the 2014 Early Years Conference in Vancouver! A Nobody’s Perfect Pre-Conference day is being planned. A NPP facilitator training, in partnership with the Public Health Agency of Canada and the Government of Nunavut, was being co-coordinated and planned for by NPP Manitoba. Many hours of correspondence, preparation and planning was spent on a project and at the last minute funding was not secured from Nunavut. We hope the project moves forward in this fiscal year.

Along with being busy with training and professional development, NPP Manitoba was awarded funding for two Public Health Agency of Canada projects; one for a Research project on NPP home visitors 1:1 parent groups and one to create a Nation-wide Knowledge Sharing Forum for NPP Trainers, Facilitators and parents. As well, Healthy Child Manitoba gave funding for the development of a Newcomer NPP program adaptations module and to support facilitators with workshops in the province. NPP RESOURCES 2012-2013

www.nobodysperfect.ca Manitoba is the only province with its own Nobody’s Perfect website. This website was updated two years ago and is currently viewed from all over the world. It is more interactive and user friendly for parents and facilitators. Parents, Social Workers, support staff etc. use the “find a group” link frequently. Funds are being made available through a special project to convert the website to a National Knowledge Sharing Forum for all Nobody’s Perfect Coordinators, Trainers and Facilitators, as well as for the general public in 2013. Manitoba will remain the host and have its own pages.

Communication for Facilitators

Facilitators continue to receive email information which include notices of upcoming Professional Development opportunities, summaries of the Brown Bag PD sessions, announcements from Healthy Child Manitoba, resource information etc. Information is also posted on the website along with Steering committee meeting dates. Other social media is being developed to help promote the program.

Parent kits – Storage and distribution Regional Health Authorities of Manitoba (RHAM) is responsible for storage and distribution of resources. RHAM has contracted Materials Distribution Agency (MDA) to implement this task. Resources are only available to active facilitators and they are provided free of charge. MDA sends monthly reports to the coordinator who monitors the supply of resources in stock and places new orders as needed. The coordinator is the only authorized person to order the resources from MDA.

Parent Kits- Revisions The Public Health Agency of Canada has committed to completing the revisions of the parent kits. The kits will contain updated images such as the ones shown on the page. We anticipate the kits to be available to facilitators in early 2014.

Other Resources The BC Council for Families is working on a set of Nobody’s Perfect Fact Sheets that highlight the updated information in each of the five parent books and the new look of Nobody’s Perfect. These fact sheets will also contain some activities parents can do with their children at home. The sheets will be released by fall of 2013 and can be downloaded from our website, www.nobodysperfect.ca and on the BC Council for Families website.

Another year and has come and gone and Manitoba continues to help strengthen families by offering this program. I have had the pleasure to see how this program changes lives. Trainers, Facilitators, Facilitator mentees, and parents have all had a positive experience when they encounter the program! My zealous commitment to the program will have me striving to the accomplish the following in the 2013-2014 fiscal year:

• to focus on support for NPP Trainers and Facilitators throughout the province with workshops, promoting the use of the new

National Facilitator Blog, etc

• to continue with NPP promotion within the province

• to continue to work with the remaining Parent Child Coalitions throughout the province to provide training opportunities

• to promote and facilitate the use the Home Visitor Project and Newcomer Project Adaptations to Trainers and Facilitators in

later 2013 and in early 2014

• to promote the revised materials and the Knowledge Sharing Forum at the Early Years Conference in Vancouver with the

National Coordinator, and then again in Manitoba!

Nobody's Perfect is an education and support program for parents of children from birth to age five.
