Welcome to historic St. Rose of Lima Catholic

Church! Built over a century ago, we all owe a debt of

gratitude to the Irish faithful who were the first to call

this church their parish. For apart from the countless

sacrifices made by that first generation of faithful to

build a suitable house of prayer and divine worship for

the greater glory of God, this beautiful church would

not exist.

Many of the beautiful stained glass windows, perhaps

the most stunning feature of the church, have been

newly restored. Rendered in the Munich Pictorial

style, they depict scenes from the life of Christ as well

as images of various angels and saints. By the end of

this year, we hope to complete this restoration project.

The careful observer will discern elements from the

Gothic, Romanesque, and Byzantine styles which

together make up the style known as Venetian Gothic.

When the church was entrusted to the care of the

priests of the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter in 2008,

the sanctuary was renovated and restored for the

celebration of the usus antiquior (more ancient usage)

of the Roman rite. Bishop Paprocki consecrated the

new main and side altars in 2012 and established the

church as a personal parish on New Years Day, 2014.

After both Sunday Masses, visitors are invited to meet

From the Pastor’s Desk — 11th Sunday after Pentecost

The deaf and dumb did not deserve to be healed and

could not even desire it since he was not aware of his

impediment.

When the disciples of St. John went to see Jesus to

know whether he was truly the Messiah that the Baptist

was announcing, Our Lord said: “Go, tell John what you

have seen and heard. The blind receive their sight, the

lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the

dead are raised up, the poor have the good news (gospel)

preached to them.”

Our Lord does not say: "I am the messiah" at this point

but points out the fulfilling of the prophecies of the

messianic time. Look at what I am doing! The hour is

come. The blind see and the deaf hear. Messianic times

have arrived. Salvation is at hand! These signs of the

messianic times were given by the prophet Isaiah. When

the witnesses of this miracle proclaimed: "He makes the

deaf hear and the dumb speak", they were not only in

admiration of the divine power of Jesus but they

proclaimed that the prophecy of Isaiah had been fulfilled:

the Messiah is here.

It was the entire mankind that was deaf and dumb

before Our Lord Jesus Christ redeemed us. He is the

Word of God! He has brought the message of salvation.

He has come to save us. Not only does he teach us what

to believe and what to do, but because he is the

Incarnate Word of God, we need to welcome him in our

soul. We have been redeemed by his passion and death

on the cross and his resurrection as St. Paul reminds us.

St. Paul was deaf and dumb before he converted. He was

one of the most zealous persecutors of Christians. Yet,

he met the Lord on the way to Damascus and he became

his most zealous apostle.

Religion is not a mere question of sentiments or

emotions. It is a question of hearing the Word of God not

only with our body ears but with those ears of our heart.

Too Many people believe they should belong to a religion

only if they feel good in it; they should go to church only

if they enjoy it or are emotionally moved. No, religion is

not primarily about emotions. It is about truth. We

have the duty to belong to the true religion, the one

founded by Our Lord Jesus Christ, the Catholic Church

even though we might not feel comfortable in it. Religion

is about giving to God what we owe him.

Of course, we should also enjoy studying our

beautiful faith. We must be docile to the motions of the

Holy Ghost and the grace of God. Let us not seek

extraordinary graces, mystical experiences, or private

revelations but let us strive to do the will of God.

From Birthright

Birthright of Quincy will once again have their

annual bake sale fundraiser booth at the Quincy

Knights of Columbus Barbeque (KC BBQ) on August

13-16. Birthright is once again asking the Catholic

churches to help by donating home-baked goods for the

bake sale.

St. Rose is asked to donate 10 to 15 baked

items for Friday August 14th. These can be brought

directly to the K of C grounds on Friday or arrangements

can be made for Birthright to pick them up from St. Rose.

For additional questions, please contact Patty Adam at

217-440-8388.

In conjunction with the bake sale, Birthright will

raffle a beautiful hand-made quilt and a dining package

with gift certificates to area restaurants—winner’s choice.

Each person who bakes for the bake sale will have their

name entered into this raffle with our grateful thanks for

your generosity. If Birthright is picking your items up,

please include a tag with your item listing your name,

parish and phone number. If dropping off your baked good

at the KC BBQ, you may choose to fill out your own raffle

ticket as well.
