Last month marked 44 years since the terrible 1973 Yom Kippur war, an event that changed so much in the history of the State of Israel. For me personally this year is also 44 years since Sima & I met and left Israel together and came to the U.S. to complete my undergraduate studies at UC Berkeley. Looking back over that period of time, we

can see so much has happened in Israel, both for good and bad.

Israel has had all too many wars, too many terrorist attacks, too many false starts at peace and the assassination of a Prime Minister because of his stand regarding peace. On the good side, Israel has made peace with two neighboring states, Egypt & Jordan, has seen the fall of the Soviet Union, mass aliyah from the Former Soviet Union, and mass aliyah from Ethiopia. Yet for 40 years the basic problems and conflicts within Israeli society haven’t changed greatly. Israel is still conflicted over the question of peace versus territories. The social problems within Israel have not disappeared. Nevertheless we should not despair; we must never give up hope - Israel is too important.

The creation of the modern Jewish State was the most important event in Jewish history in 2,000 years. Israel is an unfinished work whose future has yet to be determined. Modern Israel was truly the culmination of the vision of Theodore Herzl described in his seminal work The Jewish State. In many ways that book can be seen as a modern parallel to the Torah of Moses. Both Herzl and Moses faced the situation of a people living in exile, without a land. Both had not only to perform the political work to allow our people to go free; they also had to prepare the vision of what life would be like in their new land. Moses' ideas concerning the ideal society are embedded in our Torah.

Much the same situation was faced by Herzl in more recent times. Herzl saw the way in which enlightened nations of the world continued to hate Jews even after the emancipation. Herzl envisioned a better way for Jews to live: in a Jewish land in which Jews and Judaism would be a majority, where Judaism could flourish freely in creative ways. Herzl outlined a utopian society where the power of religious authorities was confined to the synagogue, where Jews lived together with non-Jews in peace and harmony, where there was equity, justice and honesty in government.

Obviously modern Israel has not fulfilled that vision any more than the vision of Moses was fulfilled. The gap between rich and poor is too great. The gap between Ashkenazim and Sephardim has yet to be closed. Ethiopians still face some problems of discrimination. The lack of equality between Arabs and Jews is still a problem.

And looming large the religious problem remains to be solved. The monopoly of the Orthodox rabbinate over religion, the Orthodox control of marriage and divorce and conversion is an infringement on religious freedom. Above all, the attainment of peace has yet to be achieved.

There is so much to do to create the society envisioned by Herzl; the same ideals enshrined in the Israeli Declaration of Independence. Over the last 44 years the positive outweighs the negative. Today Israel remains the key place in the hearts and minds of most Jews everywhere. It is the only place where a Jew can live as a member of the majority. Now is the time for Israel in partnership with Jews outside of Israel to move forward and realize the great ideals upon which the state was founded. May peace come soon, yet in our lifetimes,

B’vrachot, blessings, Rabbi Dennis

First, I must express my deepest thanks to YOU and YOU and YOU for your generous response to our Yom Kippur Appeal. You recognized our need and we are so grateful. Our Temple Judea family is the backbone of our existence, without which we could not exist. Each of you has made it possible for our yearly budget to continue on track. As your Co-President, I speak for myself and for Dolores, for our Clergy, as well as for our officers and board of directors in expressing our sincerest appreciation for your continued support. We do have one specific goal in which each of you can assist, which has no money involved – and that is MEMBERSHIP GROWTH. Our membership committee, under the excellent direction of Michele Dorris continues to work and plan tirelessly to promote our Temple and enroll new members. They have had success, but they want more. We have a good thing going here at Temple Judea. Our dues are, by far the lowest full-service synagogue in Orange County. We provide so much including Free Hebrew School. Our Temple offers Champagne on a Beer budget. So talk us up with your friends, family and neighbors. Invite someone to join you at a Friday night and/or a Saturday morning service. Become someone who shares our high-end product, Temple Judea, with family, friends and neighbors. Growth is our goal – please make it yours and watch us succeed. Respectfully submitted,

Jean Janowsky Co-President

HELP BUILD OUR FUTURE An easy way is to make a charitable gift through your

will. Simply use these words in drafting your will: “I give and bequeath unto Temple Judea, a nonprofit corporation, that is recognized as exempt from tax under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code, ID# 95-2503535 the sum of $____ to be used for general purposes.” If you don’t wish to specify an amount, you may wish to state the amount as a percentage of your estate. Your assets remain in your control during your lifetime and you’re able to modify your bequest should circumstances change. Please let us know if we can be of assistance to you or your advisors.

Gobble Gobble...

October was a very busy month at Temple Judea as we observed Sukkot, Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah immediately after September’s High Holidays. Thus, we did not have a Men’s Club breakfast. We return to our regular schedule in November and December. Dalia Taft, archivist of the Orange County Jewish Historical Society, will be the featured speaker at the November 1st Men’s Club Breakfast. She is responsible for increasing awareness of the role Jews have played in the development of Orange County which began in 1857 when the first Jew settled in Anaheim. Author Chris Epting will follow on December 6th. Chris participated in the August breakfast alongside Olympic gold medal-winning swimmer Shirley Babashoff. Chris will speak about the historic three day camping trip in 1903 between President Theodore Roosevelt and naturalist John Muir in Yosemite Valley that led to the creation of the United States National Park Service. Men’s Club breakfasts begin at 10 AM in our social hall. They are a great way to mingle with your friends, meet new friends, and have a tasty meal of lox/cream cheese spread, bagel, eggs, Danish, coffee & tea - all this for $5. Remember Women are invited too. We encourage you to bring your friends.

RELIGIOUS COMMITTEE

In the Beginning… For the past few weeks, and extending into the middle of December, we experience a lull in Jewish Holiday activity: the High Holy Day period during which we observed Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, then followed immediately by Succot, Shemini Atzeret and Simchat Torah have come and gone; Chanukah is more than a month away. This gap allows your Religious Committee Co-Chairs to do some teaching. Have you ever wondered when and why synagogues started in history? Here are the facts: The First Temple built in Jerusalem by King Solomon in 966 BCE had animal sacrifices conducted there by the priests and the practice of congregants praying had not yet been developed. Then the First Temple was destroyed in 586 BCE; the priests and educated members of the Jewish community were exiled to Babylonia. During the Babylonia captivity (586 – 537 BCE) ritual sacrifices were not permitted so temporary synagogues were created as a place for communal worship and instruction. ‘Synagogue’ is derived from the Greek synagein, which means “to bring together” and is a translation of the Hebrew term Bet Knesset “a house of gathering.” Upon returning to Jerusalem from Babylonia, religious life was reorganized. While the Second Temple was built, congregational worship, consisting of prayer and the reading of sections from the Bible, continued and led to the building of permanent synagogues after the Second Temple was destroyed in 70 CE. We can make the claim that Temple Judea is really more than 2,500 years old! We look forward to seeing you on holidays and at our Minyan on Monday and Thursday mornings as well as our Shabbat services on Friday evenings and Saturday mornings. We have so much to offer to our Temple family.

Men’s Club Humor by Arnold Miller

A Jewish day school teacher was explaining the history of Thanksgiving to her kindergarten class. She asked: “Why did the Pilgrims sail from England to America?” Melvin, the class wise guy, quickly jumped up and said: “Because they missed their plane.” ===================== Jewish newlyweds were hosting their first Thanksgiving dinner for the husband’s parents. The wife was not a very good cook so she called the “turkey hotline” for help. She asked: “How long should I cook the turkey?” The advisor said: “It really depends on how frozen the bird is.” The advisor then asked: “What state is your bird in?” The wife replied: “Florida.” =================== A man and his wife were having Thanksgiving dinner at a fancy restaurant. And the husband kept staring at a very drunk lady eating alone at the next table. After a while the wife became annoyed and she hissed at her husband “Do you know her?” “Yes” admitted the husband. “She’s my ex-girlfriend. I heard she started drinking after we split up seven years ago.” “Really” said the wife. “Who would think a person could go on celebrating for that long!”
