Dear Parishioners,

Every year, each parish in the Archdiocese welcomes a visiting missionary. This program organized through the Missionary Cooperative Program gives us here in the parish an enlarged view of the Church world-wide.

I am delighted to welcome Fr. Ignatius Cetoute who is with us this weekend and will speak on behalf of the Missions at all our Masses.

For those writing checks to support the Missions, please make them payable to Holy Infant, and we will see that they receive your donation. And for those who give through Faith Direct, you will find an opportunity to give online.

Holy Infant is blessed to have had such a longstanding relationship with the Missionary Cooperative Program, so we are constantly reminded of how we who have received so much are obliged in charity to assist those in need. This weekend, we are given yet another opportunity to reach out to some of our poorest brothers and sisters. Thank you in advance for your generosity.

It’s nearing that time of the year again when we begin the process of Inquiry for any among us who may have an interest in becoming Catholic. We also welcome those with an interest in completing sacramental initiation that may have begun with Baptism as a child but may have never been pursued to completion through Confirmation and Eucharist. The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (R.C.I.A.) will host its Period of Inquiry on Wednesday evenings this fall in Rosario Hall. If you, your spouse, or a family member is not Catholic and is interested in inquiring about the Catholic faith or if a friend or neighbor has a desire to complete their Christian initiation begun in Baptism, please call Laura Marlo at (636) 346-7983 or you may contact us at the rectory. We are looking forward to another rich and grace-filled opportunity to share our faith with those who are inquiring and to welcome new members into our Communion of Faith next Easter! God’s blessings to you and your family!

D C ,A !Matrimony

Contrary to how it is often portrayed in popular culture, marriage is a Sacrament instituted by Christ that is ordered to the sanctification of the spouses and the generation and education of children. Marriage is also a sign of the love that Christ has for His church. In this Sacrament, spouses are given a special grace “to live out their marriage as a symbol of Christ’s love for his bride the Church” (Compendium, 341). How often do you and your spouse pray together? Let us also pray for a renewal of marriage culture in our country.

There’s a bit of a “missing link” in the first two sentences of today’s Gospel from Mark. In the first, the apostles return from having been sent out on mission two by two (“one who is sent” is the meaning of “apostle”). Their instructions were to preach repentance, drive out demons, and heal the sick in Jesus’ name. In the second sentence, Jesus tells them to come away with him and rest a while. It would be nice for us to imagine that, between those two sentences, a look of amazed gratitude and pleasure crossed the face of Jesus as he hears of the kingdom proclaimed in his name, and how they didn’t have to shake the dust off their feet anywhere. They deserved a rest! It might not be bad for us, when we gather together with Jesus as the apostles do today, to do this kind of debriefing, allowing the Lord to hear what we’ve sought to do in his name, our successes, our failures, our need to get away with him for a while to be fortified for further work in God’s name. For we, the baptized, are not only the flock of Jesus Christ; through water and the power of the Spirit we have also become the Body of Christ, the presence of the Shepherd for the life of the world.

When someone requests a Stephen Minister, our Stephen Ministry Referrals Coordinators will meet with that person, explain what Stephen Ministry is, and help determine whether Stephen Ministry is the kind of care that person needs. Our Referrals Coordinators then match that person with one of our available Stephen Ministers. (Male Stephen Ministers for men and female Stephen Ministers for women.) The Stephen Minister will then call that person and begin meeting with him or her for about an hour each week as long as the need is there.

Everything a care receiver says to his or her Stephen Minister is kept confidential. The Stephen Minister doesn’t try to solve problems; rather he or she listens, cares, prays and helps the care receiver find his or her path to healing and wholeness.

If you know someone who might benefit by having a Stephen Minister, you can call Patricia, (636) 227-0802, #3 or Gene at (636) 527-5385. There is also a confidential email at [email protected] that you can use if you prefer.

I ’ N T L !!! The 2015 Annual Catholic Appeal is coming to a close. The generous commitment of so

many individuals and families could make this the most successful Appeal ever. If you already have made a gift, THANK YOU! If you missed the opportunity at your parish, please refer to the recent reminder sent to your home, or go online at archstl.org/aca to make a gift today.

Recently, nearly 200 sixth and seventh grade students gathered at Kenrick-Glennon Seminary for an inside look at what it is like to be a seminarian. A seminarian’s day is filled with academic pursuits, praying together, serving in parishes and other apostolates, and, of course, daily Mass together. Kenrick-Glennon Days gave young men a sampling of all of the above and more. Activities included racing down a 20-foot, homemade waterslide into a mud pit while shooting hoops. This probably isn’t the first impression most people have of seminary life, but for many young men, it was a fun part of their experience at this summer camp the Seminary hosts each year.

Your gift to the Annual Catholic Appeal helps make possible the many outreach activities of the Archdiocesan Office of Vocations to foster vocations. The Kenrick-Glennon Days summer camp is one important way young men meet seminarians and the young priests of the archdiocese. The future of our faith and the sacramental life of the Church depend on our future priests. Your generosity will encourage vocations to the priesthood and religious life, and help build the church, strengthening parishes, schools and ministries that reach out daily to serve others in the archdiocese.

St. Mary Magdalen Parish in Brentwood has recently installed a new shrine dedicated to the unborn. The shrine features a statue of Mary, visibly pregnant, as a sign of hope to families who have lost children, whether from miscarriage, abortion, or a later death of a child. The shrine also holds a book of remembrance for families to include the name of their unborn child. The shrine is open to all who wish to pray and reflect.
