Taken over as Executive Director, Visvesvarya Iron & Steel Plant (VISP), pioneer in production of high quality alloy and special steels, a unit of SAIL, at Bhadravati-Karnataka, and planned its Turn Around through acquiring of Iron Ore Mines and Strategic Partner in Joint Venture.

At Rourkela Steel Plant

Since May’08 to Aug.’12 : Executive Director – Projects, Head of Projects

At Rourkela Steel Plant: Rourkela Steel Plant planned its capacity of expansion of hot metal from 2 million ton per annum to 4.5 million ton per annum and major projects worth Rs12000 Cr have been executed.

Headed the team of professionals from Plant, and executed the massive construction work by effectively utilizing expertise of Consultants and agencies for planning the following major facilities into successful operation by 2013. The Facilities include construction of :

New 7.0 m Tall Coke Oven Battery No.6 (1 x 67 Ovens) with Coke Dry Cooling Plant New Coal Handling Plant and new By-product Plant Complex New Sinter Plant No. 3 (1 x 360m2) New Blast Furnace -5 Complex (4060m3 useful volume) New 3rd BOF (150 t), LF, RH-OB and 3rd Single Strand Slab Caster with Balancing Facilities in

Excellent track record of managing complete Automation, Hydraulics, Power Electronics, Control and Maintenance of 6.3MW and 17.3MVA DC and Synchronous Motors including 11 KV Switch Gears.

At Merchant Mill, Assistant General Manager, Bhilai Steel Plant

Spearheaded operations of Electrical Maintenance Section of the Mill and commissioning of Thermo Mechanically Treated Bar Rolling Equipment.

leading the RSM, RTS and RPDB Teams;

Led the team at Rail and Structural Mill to achieve new benchmarks in productivity. Enhanced the finished production from 8.8 Lakh tons to 9.7 Lakh tons in 3 years, 25% more

than the mill’s rated capacity of 7.5 Lakh tons. Generated phenomenal growth in Long Rail (130m and 260m) dispatch from 9000T in 2004-

05 to 72,000T in 2006-07. Increased the mill utilization from 70% to 79% by developing culture of continual

improvements through innovation, creativity, employee engagement, motivation and human resource management.

Introduced major innovations, process improvements and logistics.

Instrumental in synergizing project and shop for timely completion of 260m Long Rail Project without teething troubles; implemented a unique methodology of using dedicated erection, testing and commissioning cross-functional teams.

Effective coordination with Indian Railways, RVNL, RDSO- Lucknow and RITES.

At Electrical Section, General Manager (Electrical), Bhilai Steel Plant

Established Customer Satisfaction Model for the plant’s Electrical Department. Conceptualised & implemented innovative systems/procedures for maintenance and monitoring of

critical equipment throughout plant and iron ore, lime stone & dolomite captive mines Operation & maintenance of 220/132/11/6.6 KV Power System Network consisting of GIS including

commissioning of 2*250 MW Power Plant at Bhilai by working in coordination with NSPCL.

Established a system of regular and effective interaction between Central (Electrical Maintenance) Departments and Production Shops to monitor maintenance & innovation and ensure customer satisfaction as per internal customer satisfaction (ICS) agreements;

Successfully introduced Conveyer Belt Management across steel plant units as a special thrust area. Initiated improvements and innovations in technology, processes, maintenance & operating practices

through regular brain storming exercises with Executives. Revamped the practices of Human Resource Management in the organization;

Organised Training and Management Programs “Bhoomika” and “Anwarat” to refresh skills of Executives/ Non-executives.

Conducted Competency Mapping Exercise for Skill Development. Employed Six Sigma and KM for improvement in different areas.

Other Initiatives during tenure at BSP:

Led 4 groups of employees (20 Associates) for execution of projects on Productivity and Quality Enhancement in Plate Mill, Merchant Mill and Rail and Structural Mill who Won The Prime Minister’s Shram Awards (Shram Ratnas, Shram Bhushan and Shram Veer).

Successfully obtained ISO 9001-2000 Certification for various departments to establish sustainable operation and maintenance practices to improve plant performance.

Steered Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) & installed SAP across SAIL. Initiated implementation of Manufacturing Execution System (MES) and Uniform Codification System in Bhilai Steel Plant.

Plant Operations: Coordinated plant activities as per standards with accountability for strategic utilization & deployment of resources to achieve organizational objectives. Steered de-bottlenecking for enhancement of plant capacity and quality improvement. Human Resource Management and Administration were the key elements for successful and sustained operations. Project Management: Successfully executed the expansion of Rourkela Steel Plant from existing 2MTPY to 4.5MTPY with a cost of Rs 12000Cr. As Executive Director (Projects), headed the team of professionals from Plant, and executed the massive construction work by effectively utilizing expertise of Consultants and agencies. Project planning, project management techniques with effective monitoring and controls, administration, human resource management, team building, cost control and time management, enabled the project to complete as per schedule.

Installation & Commissioning: Preparing of test trials and commissioning procedures by taking the inputs from plant experts, project documents & vendor manuals enabled trouble free operations. Micro planning, effective supervision and coordination of entire gamut of pre commissioning & commissioning activities. as per project requirement and 3rd party inspection, resulted in smooth load trials.

Production: Executing processes as per standards and organizing manpower/machine schedules for smooth production at the shop floor within time & cost parameters. Ensuring cost reduction by implementing new techniques & working on product improvement. Preparing production budget, planning and conducting trials for improvement in productivity, quality and environment.

Operations & Maintenance: Reviewing existing processes and re-designing to enhance operational efficacy. Scheduling and planning predictive and preventive maintenance by following MTBF techniques. Conducting root cause analysis, monitoring major shutdowns, de-bottlenecking and implementing advanced management tools like TPM.

Process Improvement: Executing cost saving techniques/ measures to achieve substantial reduction in expenditure. Monitoring batch control and introducing modifications to maximize productivity. Directing the technical development of processes aimed at providing technical leadership to manufacture safe & sustainable Steel and set benchmarks for the Industry.
