Swedenborg and Five artistsWilliam Blake, John Flaxman, Hiram Powers, William Page, and George Inness

Diane apostolos-Cappadona and Jane Williams-Hogan

From its earliest publication, Emanuel Swedenborg’s visionary theology has appealed to artists, innovators, and thinkers of all types and backgrounds. In this volume, two experts in the fields of art history and Swedenborgian studies examine Swedenborg’s little-understood influence on five different visual artists.

Starting chronologically in Great Britain in the late eighteenth century, the authors discuss author and painter William Blake and sculptor John Flaxman, looking not only at the Swedenborgian motifs in their art but at the two men in the context of early British Swedenborgianism. Following the expansion of Swedenborgianism across the Atlantic, the authors then consider three American artists: sculptor Hiram Powers and painters Wil-liam Page and George Inness. Each chapter focuses in on key pieces of art that demonstrate Swedenborg’s influence and the controversies that grew up around those pieces. The volume wraps up with an examination of the iconographical threads that connect all five of these artists.

This richly illustrated volume sheds new light on the way Swedenborg’s ideas were interpreted in visual media. Art lovers and fans of Swedenborg alike will benefit from this fresh insight into his influence.

Diane apostolos-Cappadona is adjunct professor of religious art and cul-tural history in the Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding, adjunct professor in visual culture (formerly art and culture) in the Graduate Liberal Studies Program, and adjunct professor of Catholic studies at Georgetown University. She currently lives in Washington, DC.

Jane Williams-Hogan is a professor of history and social science at Bryn Athyn College, where she holds the Carpenter Chair in Church History. She has a BA in English, an MA in human relations, and a PhD in sociology, all from the University of Pennsylvania. She chaired the 1988 Swedenborg Symposium in Bryn Athyn and organized the Swedenborg Seminar at the American Academy of Religion in the 1990s. She lives in Bryn Athyn, Pennsylvania.

Emanuel Swedenborg (1688-1772) was a Swedish scientist, nobleman, and theologian who spent his life investigating the mysteries of the soul. Born in Stockholm to a staunchly Lutheran family, he graduated from the University of Uppsala and then traveled to England, Holland, France, and Germany to study the leading scientists of the time. He gained favor with Sweden’s King Charles XII, who gave him a position on the board of overseers of the Swedish mining industry. Later, he was granted a seat on the Swedish House of Nobles by Charles XII’s successor, Queen Ulrika Eleonora. Between 1743 and 1745 he began to have visions of heaven, hell, and Jesus Christ which resulted in a stream of books about the nature of God, the afterlife, and the inner meaning of the Bible. He devoted the last decades of his life to studying Scripture and presenting his own unique theology to the world.

The Mission of the Swedenborg Foundation, organized in 1849, is to foster an affirmative, informed, and increasingly broad engagement with the spiritual experiences and theological works of Emanuel Swedenborg. In addition to publishing books by and about Swedenborg, the Foundation supports research and translation projects, conferences, lectures, and a library. The Swedenborg Foundation is a charitable, nonprofit corporation. (See pages 17-18 for membership information.) Swedenborg Foundation Press is the publishing imprint of the Swedenborg Foundation.

in the Presence of angelsReflections on Mattie Pearl and Emanuel Swedenborg

andrea R. Garrison introduction by Stephen Larsen

In October 2004, Andrea Garrison’s mother, Mattie Pearl, passed into the spiritual world. The weeks leading up to her crossing were a powerful time for Andrea and the rest of her family as Mattie Pearl shared her love, her insights, and her visions of heaven with those around her.

Andrea knew from the time she was a little girl that there was a spiri-tual reality beyond what we could see, and her mother encouraged her to explore different understandings of the Divine. As an adult, Andrea encountered the writings of Emanuel Swedenborg and was struck by the similarities between his theology and her experiences. Her quest to find others who knew about the Swedish mystic led her to new friends and, ultimately, a deeper exploration of her family history.

Originally published as The Crossing Over of Mattie Pearl, this expanded edition tells more about Andrea’s family history, including the role her father played in her life, as well as her reflections on Emanuel Swedenborg. Anyone who has mourned the loss of a loved one or been curious about the other side will be inspired and uplifted by this true story of a remarkable woman.

andrea R. Garrison is the author of The Crossing Over of Mattie Pearl, co-author of the children’s book Abernathy the Basset Hound, and the host/producer of Online With Andrea, a global, multidimensional Internet radio program that connects heart to heart. Andrea is committed to her spiritual explorations and studies. Visit www.onlinewithandrea.com. She lives in New York City; New Haven , Connecticut; and northeastern Pennsylvania.

Flight of the TrogonBook 2 of the Mexican Eden Trilogy

Sylvia Montgomery Shaw

When an eccentric Mexican general dies and leaves his entire fortune to Isabel Brentt, the American daughter-in-law whom he never met, his widow suspects foul play—especially when Isabel disappears with the lawyer responsible for drawing up the will. Manuela Vizcarra de Nyman has her husband disinterred and launches an investigation that ends with her own son, Benjamín, being convicted of his murder. Heartbroken and outraged, Manuela makes Isabel a prisoner on her isolated plantation, delighting in tormenting the woman she blames for the family’s plight. But could she have the wrong person?

Set in Mexico during the revolution of 1910–20, this is a story of love, revenge, and the choices that define us: A young lawyer sets off on a quest to find the truth about the general’s death. A bodyguard is ordered to mur-der the man he is supposed to protect. A brutal criminal falls in love with a prostitute. A priest is forced to maintain an elaborate lie. A patricide seeks redemption through a brotherhood of criminals.

Follow the continuing romance of Benjamín and Isabel as both seek their freedom against the backdrop of a brutal war and learn the unex-pected strength that can come from one’s inner will.

Sylvia Montgomery Shaw is a Mexican-American writer and scholar who was born in Mexico, grew up fully bilingual, majored in Spanish literature as an undergraduate and earned a doctorate degree in English. Her teach-ing career has taken her to the University of Rhode Island, Clark Uni-versity, Boston University, and Bryn Athyn College. She is the author of Paradise Misplaced, the first book in the Mexican Eden trilogy, and is in the process of completing the final installment, Planting Eden. She currently lives in The Woodlands, Texas.

PatternsMake ’Em and Break ’Em

Robert F. Lawson and Carol S. Lawson

What are the patterns that define our lives? How do we create them? How do we know when it’s time to break them? How do we handle it when they’re broken for us? The twenty-eighth edition of the Chrysalis Reader series, which includes both the quarterly journal Chrysalis and the annual Chrysalis Reader anthology, explores all these questions through poetry, essays, and short fiction.

Among more than seventy entries in this volume are works from poet laureates, acclaimed authors, and up-and-coming voices alike. Patty Chris-tiena Willis tells the story of a woman from a family of holistic healers who suddenly is unable to use her special gift. Michael Barber paints a poignant picture of a soldier’s return from Baghdad. Richard Lines steps back into the past to explore a debate among early followers of Sweden-borg about whether or not to split from existing Christian churches to establish one of their own. Rounding out the volume are two Bailey Prize winners: Katherine Noble, a young poet whose work is already winning awards, and Kristin Troyer, whose essay moves between descriptions of being an actress in Arthur Miller’s play “The Crucible” and life as a univer-sity student dealing with her father’s illness.

The volume is a treat for literature lovers of all backgrounds as well as Swedenborgians who are interested in the deeper spiritual aspects of art.

Robert F. Lawson’s poetry has appeared in Three Rivers Poetry Journal, Salt Lick, Plum Review, Phoenix, Negative Capability, Lullwater Review, Kalli-ope, Hampden-Sydney Poetry Review, and others. He recently retired from Maine Public Broadcasting as the major gifts and planned giving officer. A co-editor for the Chrysalis Reader and former editor for Simon & Schus-ter, Lawson does freelance editing and writing consultation.

Carol S. Lawson holds a master’s degree in literature from Bennington College. Her long and varied career in publishing has included managing a medical journal for Harper & Row, publications and press work for the US Public Health Service and the Environmental Protection Agency, and the executive editor position at the American Birding Association.

• Incorporates poetry, essays, and short fiction for a variety of voices

Secrets of Heaven, volume 2Emanuel Swedenborg Translated by Lisa Hyatt Cooper

Secrets of Heaven is Emanuel Swedenborg’s magnum opus, a fifteen-volume work that explores the inner meaning of the Bible. This annotated Deluxe Edition of volume 2 gives new insight and inspiration to scholars and seek-ers alike.

The second volume of Secrets of Heaven is a verse-by-verse exegesis of Genesis 9–15, beginning with God’s covenant with Noah after the Flood and then following the familiar story of the patriarch Abraham. In the process, Swedenborg discusses the concept of regeneration (spiritual rebirth) and describes the way the people act before and after rebirth. He also talks about an epoch of human history that he calls the ancient church and the spiritual state of the people in that church. Interspersed with the biblical commentary are chapters on related topics such as the lives of angels in heaven, how distance and time work in the spiritual world, and the nature of hell.

Secrets of Heaven provides essential insight into Swedenborg’s theology and lays the groundwork for the rest of his writings. This Deluxe Edition includes more than six hundred notes illuminating the meaning of obscure references within the text, making it the ultimate study aid for serious students of Swedenborg.

Emanuel Swedenborg (1688–1772) was a Swedish scientist, nobleman, and theologian who spent his life investigating the mysteries of the soul. Born in Stockholm to a staunchly Lutheran family, he graduated from the University of Uppsala and then traveled to England, Holland, France, and Germany to study the leading scientists of the time. Lisa Hyatt Cooper is translator of the fifteen-volume Secrets of Heaven for the Swedenborg Foundation’s New Century Edition of Swedenborg. Her past publications include a Latin edition of Swedenborg’s work Other Plan-ets. She contributed translations to Debates with Devils by Donald L. Rose and was the main consultant for five of the twelve volumes of John Elliott’s translation of Arcana Caelestia, published by the Swedenborg Society in London. She currently lives in Bryn Athyn, Pennsylvania.

images of Knowing / The other Side of LifeImages of Knowing is a stunning visual poem exploring our place in the universe, inspired by the teachings of Emanuel Swedenborg. The Other Side of Life is not so much an argument for immortality as an explora-tion of our spiritual being here and now, a confirmation that our souls are far more significant and durable than our transient bodies.

about the Swedenborg FoundationHoused in a historic building in West Chester, Pennsylvania, is the Swedenborg Foundation, publisher of the writings of Emanuel Swedenborg in the US for over 150 years. This nonprofit organization also publishes works that relate to Swedenborg’s influence on the arts, religion, theology, psychology, and literature. His work covers such areas as the afterlife, heaven and hell, dream imagery, angels, and a new under-standing of Christianity. People such as Helen Keller, Johnny appleseed, william blake, Henry James, ralph waldo emerson, and d.t. Suzuki were all influenced by his insights. Currently, in addition to other publications, the Foundation is in the process of preparing a new translation of all of his writings, the New Century Edition.

The Swedenborg Foundation Library offers many resources for scientific, religious, cultural, historical, and spiritual inquiries.

Over two thousand books and documents are available for research needs—from recently published scholarly books to transcriptions of New Church radio broadcasts; DVDs and novels featuring Swedenborgian themes; works on science, history and religion; and biographies and bibliographies. Some of the library’s unique documents include historical New Church periodicals such as the New Church Children’s Magazine and meeting minutes from the 1800s.

An on-site catalog of the library’s contents has been categorized by topic as well as by author and by title. An electronic catalog is available on the Foundation’s website.
