St John the Baptist BNS Cashel Work package for Mr Coskeran’s (Room 9) and Ms Quinn’s (Room 8) Third Classes Week beginning Monday 27 April 2020 Hello everyone/Dia dhaoibh go léir! Another week has come around and we hope it finds you and your family keeping well. This week has been designated Active Home Week by the organisers of the Active School Flag initiative in Ireland and we are asking you to get involved by getting active! We have reduced some other areas of work just a little (anywhere you see the * symbol) to allow some more time to get out and about in the fresh air which we’re sure you are doing anyway. There’s still lots of non-active work to also get stuck into. More riddles, a story starter that requires you to save the world, a floating and sinking experiment and a card game. Please note below there is a change as to how we will be communicating with our teacher email being used as opposed to the Homework mail you were using to date. Finally, and we know all you boys will love this, we did make a mistake last week with the Maths Puzzle answer! The square was equal to two and not five as stated in the answer. Teachers, eh! Thank you to the eagle eyed LD who spotted this. He has assured us he will not bring it up when we get back to school! We’re sure the rest of you won’t either. Here’s your plan for the week ahead. Remember to continue to do your best and note that you can now communicate with us via our school email addresses either [email protected] or [email protected] . You can send us photos of your work, send photos of you completing some of the tasks that we’ve set or ask us a question or query about the assigned work package. If you don’t want any pictures uploaded to the website, then you can just state this in the email. But please, do get in touch with us. We would ask that your parents send us an email this week, regardless, so that we’ve got your families’ email address for correspondence. Our special education teachers have also been preparing work for boys receiving extra support at school. They can be contacted by email at: [email protected], [email protected], [email protected] We will talk to you all soon. Mr Coskeran and Ms Quinn

Story Starter

As they lowered me from the chopper I gazed out at the unfolding destruction. I had trained my whole life for this moment. The world was under attack and The President needed to be rescued. It was up to me to rescue him/her. Use the above image and information as inspiration and write a story detailing your mission to rescue The President. Please find a Story Starter Hints and Guide at the bottom of the package that might help you write your story. Oral Language Topic Challenge - Being Active How many items relating to being active can you name in 60 seconds? Riddle 1: I have 13 hearts but no other organs. What am I? 2: I shave everyday but my beard never gets any shorter. Why?

Short Story Generator - Cheat Mode Last week it was a fairytale, this week you can generate your own short story by following the link below and inputting information into the prompts. https://bit.ly/2yJP0BM Hint: A protagonist is the main character in your story. Bonus Oral Language - Explorify https://bit.ly/2Jmm1q4 I know what you’re thinking, not another website to sign up to! However, the lads do enjoy this. When you sign in, type ‘Zoom in Zoom out’ into the search bar. Here they have to identify what an item is from really close up, they can then ‘zoom out’ to make it easier.

Weekly SESE project (Science/History/ Geography)

Topic of the Week - Floating/Sinking When we think about what items float or sink, it can be confusing. Why does a marble sink in a glass of water but a large ship can float in the sea? What we must remember is that: Things that float weigh less than the water they replace. Things that sink weigh more than the water they replace. Why not do an investigation at home? ⟹⟹

Question: Will an orange or lemon float or sink in water? Will it float or sink if you remove the peel? If you can’t try this out at home, perhaps you can watch this video→ The peel or rind of an orange is full of tiny air pockets which help give it a lower density than water, making it float to the surface. Removing the rind (and all the air pockets) from the orange increases its density higher than that of water, making it sink.

Video What makes something float or sink - video https://bit.ly/2zsHbRr Investigation: Experiment with some items at home and don’t forget to make predictions first. You can draw out your own table similar to the one further on in this document. Choose some items from your home to test e.g. a pencil, an egg, an apple, a door key, a sponge or any suitable items (check with a parent first - it would not be a good idea to place a car key or mobile phone in water!!!)

● Fill a sink, a bucket or a bath with water.

● Leave around ¼ empty. ● Make/record your prediction ● Slowly lower one item into the water. ● Remove the item from the water and

test the next item. Orange sink or float https://bit.ly/353jWJs

Length

We measure length using centimetres and metres.

cm = centimetres m = metres There are 100cm in 1 metre. 100cm = 1m.

Rulers are used to measure small objects. Most rulers are 15cm or 30cm long.

Remember some rulers have an extra space at the beginning. Do not use this when measuring.

Always begin at the ‘0’ or the ‘cm’.

Find some objects in your home that can be measured in centimetres (cm).

First estimate the length then measure it. Write the difference between the two.

You could complete a table like this in your copy.

Story Starter Hints and Guide - You don’t have to use all the hints, pick and choose ones you like. To create paragraphs consider skipping a line between the Beginning, Middle and End of your story.

Beginning ➢ As they lowered me from the chopper I gazed out at the unfolding destruction. I had trained my whole life for this moment. The world

was under attack and the President needed to be rescued. It was up to me to rescue him/her……

The reader's attention has been grabbed by starting in the middle of the ‘action point’ of the story. From here you might consider taking a step back and talking about some or all of the below.

● Telling the readers a little about yourself, name, where you’re from, family etc. ● Why you joined the special forces. ● Where you trained. ● The special skills you have. ● Your previous experience of dangerous situations.

Middle ➢ This is where the action happens. You're back to being lowered from the chopper. The ball is in, the game is on!

● As you're being lowered what can you smell, hear, see, touch. Describe your senses. ● Who is helping you? ● Where is the president being held or where is he/she hiding? ● Describe your journey to reach him/her. ● How do you and your team manage to rescue him/her?

Ending (Conclusion) ➢ The final part where you bring a conclusion to the story.

● Was your mission a success? ● What happened when you got home? ● Did the president organise for you to be rewarded? ● What did he/she say to you? ● A possible closing line where you hear about your next mission.
