The four Sundays of Advent give each of us that opportunity to preparespiritually for the Birth of the Blessed-One on the 25th. In that preparationwe seek to deepen our relationship with Him who came to earth toredeem and set us free.

The cleaning rota for next year will be drawn up shortly. As a number ofthe original ‘dusters’ have retired over the last few years if would be greatif some of the new members of the parish volunteered to help.

The work is not arduous and consists of two people dusting all the woodensurfaces in the church about 5 times a year for no more than 30-45 mins. Ifmore people volunteer then each couple will have to dust less often.

Please contact Shirley Davies at 833 6661, if you think you can fit it intoyour busy schedules. Many thanks.

Child Safety in CarsWe are approaching the time that there will be travel to events such as atable quiz, indoor football, Figure Marching Competition etc.The law hasbeen changed to afford children greater protection when travelling in cars.(Extract from Road Safety Authority Website) Under the new EU law allchildren under the age of 11/12 must be in an appropriate child car seat.No exceptions, no excuses. It’s your responsibility as a parent, grandparentor guardian to ensure that the child car seat you buy is not justappropriate for their age, height and weight but that it also conforms toEU safety standards.

This new law will be taken seriously by the BB Leadership and thereforeassistance in getting to and from events will be necessary.

Youth Notes

Youth group has been going well and it’s hard to believe I have been herefor 6 months. I have had an amazing time with each of the groups, but Ithink my favourite time has been going away with four of the youth for theAnois weekend. It was amazing to see the girls and one guy really engagingwith what God wants for there lives and really desiring to explore that.

One thing I have really come to realise since working in Clontarf is thatthe youth in Clontarf have amazing potential and I look forward to seeingeach of them see and realise this potential. The younger groups have beinggoing great and we have had a trip to bowling with the Wired Group andthe Klub saw Barnyard at UCI, Coolock on 22nd November.

I am truly blessed to be teaching these young hearts and minds. Lookingforward to the Christmas season with a trip to Ice Skating and to Essentialin Christchurch.

The Klub (age 4 - 8) meet on Wednesday from 4.00 p.m. - 5.00 p.m. in theMethodist Hall.Wired (age 9 - 11) meet on Saturday from 6.00 p.m. - 7.00 p.m. in RahenyHall.Connect 12+ meet in various venues for more information you can call meon 086 882 7258.All Youth Groups will restart on Wednesday 10th January and Sat 13thJanuary at Clontarf Methodist and Raheny Halls respectively.

Post Confirmation Group

The Post Confirmation Group has been going really well even though wehave only had three classes at this stage. We are really enjoying our timetogether learning more about the Bible and how to make it relevant to ourlives. I am really looking forward to more classes in the future.

The post confirmation classes are for anyone who has been confirmedin the last three years and they are on the second and fourth Sunday ofthe month in the Creche under the Rectory. We will be meeting on the10th and the 24th of December, and we will meet again January at 10.30a.m. on Sunday 14th and 28th. For more information you can contact meon 086 882 7258.

ReflectionThe Discovery Channel reminds us of the revolutionary changes broughtabout by the advent of occurrences over the past many years. There aretoo many to name but some stand high on the graph viz. the advent ofsteal, the telephone, electricity and communication worldwide. The bridgebuilders played their part and the trans-Atlantic cable was a tremendousfeat. The advent on the scene of the middle-classes was brought about bythe Industrial Revolution. Such historical events are truly captivating.

One Advent which is being marked presently, transcends all others andhas revolutionised the minds, hearts and lives of generations. This adventcoming on the scene is of course, the Incarnation, God’s only Son born tohumankind, the King of Kings, coming to earth in the humblest fashion.Thepurpose of his coming outstrips that of any other event and its impact iseverlasting. This Advent started in Genesis culminating in John the Baptist’sprophesy. With the coming into being - BC & AD.And thus it will remainuntil his Second Coming. The restoration of humankind back to theirmaker is ongoing for those who acknowledge Him as the saviour, at hisCross.Yes,Advent is the thrill of anticipation. The world-system has triedto highjack Christmas (and is enjoying much success) so let us mark it inthe Christian fashion, rejoicing and fulfilled and thankful.

Sunday Club Notes for December 2006

This month we are preparing for the training service on Holy Communion(10th December) and Christmas (17th December) at a Crib and CarolService. The 3rd December will be our last review/practice of the Crib andCarol Service. At this we will have a brief run through in Church afterChurch Service ends. We hope to be finished about 11.45 a.m. in Church.

On the10th December we will be meeting in Church along will all otherparishioners. We will hear why we do certain things within the service. Nowand again it is worthwhile to stop and review what we do and why, to havea deeper understanding of what it’s all about. For our younger members, they may be hearing/understanding for the first time, what Holy Communionservice is about.

We have consulted parents about children participating in HolyCommunion. We have found there are a number of parents who did, and didnot, want their child/children taking part in more than the blessing in theHoly Communion Service. As a result we, as a Sunday Club, are notproceeding further ourselves with such a varied opinion.

However, for those parents who strongly would like their child/children toparticipate should talk to the Rector on the subject.

On the 17th December we will be meeting early (10.00 a.m.) and stayingin Church. We will be telling the story of Christmas and filling the Crib as itis being told. Hopefully it will get everyone starting to focus on the specialday of Christmas!

Many Thanks J.Acheson

Parish Centre

While the excitement continues to build as the Centre takes on more andmore shape it is important to realise that it will not be ‘open for business’until after the site has been handed back to the parish by the Contractor.Would all parishioners please note that the Centre and grounds may not beaccessed at any time, however tempting it may seem. The outside of thebuilding may be finished off within the next month or so but there will thenbe a huge amount of work to be done internally on all the ‘finishes’.

The property committee have had two inspections of the site and buildingso far and expect to have another one before Christmas. These inspectionsare organised for us by the Architect (as Project Manager) with theContractor and can only be undertaken along with representatives from theDesign Team and the Contractor, while wearing appropriate clothing andhard hats. Sustenation Fund

The Sustenation Fund is a vital fund in our Parish and over the last fewyears this has gone down substantially. It is a once-off payment towards theministry of the Parish. Each household is asked to make a single donationto this fund as a way of facilitating our present level of ministry.

Please enter the amount you are donating on the form enclosed in thisissue of Parish Matters and place it in a separate envelope clearly markedSustenation Fund.

This Fund has in the past raised 5000 euro towards our ongoing costs.Thank you again for your generosity.

CMH Dioc Service

The Diocesan Church’s Ministry of Healing Service took place in theParish Church on Sunday afternoon 19th November. It took the form ofthe Eucharist with the laying-on of hands and anointing with holy oils.Theministry was led by the CMH team and Canon John Clarke, Rector ofWicklow. The Rector celebrated and the Rev’d. Darren McCallig, curateassistant at Monkstown, preached a fine sermon on the varied meaning ofthe Hebrew word Shalom meaning peace and wholeness.

The turn-out was low as a result of the awful weather and the fact thatIreland was playing Australia at Landsdowne Road, which we woncomfortable by 21-6.We are very grateful for the CMH team visiting theParish again, though parish turn-out was very disappointing. Next year theService will take place in the morning as the main act of worship.

Bequests

Over the past number of years we have received a number of very generous bequests from various friends of the Parish through theirwills. Perhaps you have considered. If this is the case, you can speak to theRector or the Church Wardens about an appropriate wording.

This is most important if the Parish is to get the full benefit of thebequest. Bequests may be general or specific. Thank You

Parish Fashion Show Update

Plans to hold a Fashion Show in March are continuing apace and we areglad to be able to tell you that we have secured commitment from twomajor retailers, Dunnes Stores and Marks and Spencer, who have agreedto participate in the show. Having such important retailers involved in theshow is key to the success of our event and it is increasingly difficult toattract major retailers such as these into local events. We are confidenttherefore that we are off to a very good start and we are looking forwardto what hopefully will be a big success for the parish and will also proveto be a big event in itself in the Clontarf area.

The Fashion Show is planned in for the 26th of March in Clontarf Castleand whereas we could never expect to match the numbers at the recentBelgrove Fashion Show we are still hoping to give them a good run fortheir money! The Fashion Show will be the cornerstone of the 2007 fundraising effort. Funds from this show will go to supporting the work of theYouth and Children’s Pastor and for parish funds in general. It is ourintention to involve as many as possible from the parish itself and to bringin good friends of our parishioners drawn from the wider community toassist. If we approach the show in this way we believe we can maximise thepotential of the show but also widen the community appeal of our workin the Clontarf area. The parish is vibrant and growing and we are keen tobe visible particularly given the arrival of the new centre shortly.

The Stepping Stones Appeal is well underway at this stage but we wouldask all who are intending to subscribe (and keep forgetting) to please doso.We are engaging in a little bit of history making here and wouldn’t it benice for future generations (perhaps even your descendants) to see yourname and that of your family in our book of record in years to come?Previous generations have made their mark so please don’t miss youropportunity to have your name included for posterity. If you don’t wantyour name included in the book of record you can of course contributeanonymously.
