INTRODUCTIONA plant grouping is not in and of itself a landscape, but poor placement of a group will ruin the overall look of the landscape design. The current homeowners wish is to ‘open up’ the approach to the front entry, creating an aesthetic more in line with their neighbor's front yards. Previous owners bordered the sidewalk with hedges, and near the curb, planted Sago palms that have become a safety hazard as far as the new owners are concerned.

Removal of the hedges creates a more expansive view and simplifies lawn maintenance. As this vista shows, the front yard is now similar in appearance to neighboring yards, creating a cohesive environment.

Removal of Sago Palms improves visibility of oncoming cars and pedestrians when owners back out of the driveway. Rosebush will also be re-located.

The renovation began with metal edging and shrub removal. The shrubs were planted decades ago so the root systems were substantial and laborious to remove. Next, deep roots were removed as well as landscape river rock used in the old landscape design.
The soil level was lowered to bring the areas even with the sod grade. During this stage, metal edging for curb-side beds was temporarily installed to assist in sod placement.
Finally, a shallow trench was dug for extension of the sprinkler system. Once completed, final grading and smoothing was done and the areas were ready for sod.

The philosophy for landscaping the curb-side planting beds was that of minimalism. A small selection of low-growing plants impart color and textures without blocking sight lines.
Phase One of planting introduced three Juniper ground cover shrubs per bed, Foxtail Ferns, and a handful of Vinca(periwinkle) varieties.
Near the front entry, retaining walls were completed via new arcs of matching stone. Geraniums were planted in the curve of each bed for accent color.
