The President’s Message

Dear Fellow Thomians,

We are into spring, my favourite season. Our Association has been quite busy during the last few months, In July, we had a very successful Gala Centenary Ball, and in August, the Transfiguration Service and a Musical Concert, the first of its kind organised by STC OBA in Melbourne.

The Transfiguration Service held in keeping with College traditions, was once again well attended. Everyone who attended the fellowship afterwards enjoyed the Kiribath, Lunumiris, Chicken Curry and Ambulthiyal.

The grand concert featured two Thomian brothers, the magnificent Rohan and Ishan De Lanerolle from Sri Lanka, backed by maestro Rushan Hewawasam and the ConChord Choir. The event was well patronized and everyone present witnessed a superb performance. The surplus from this event was donated to the College Scholarship Fund to assist disadvantaged students to receive education at College.

The next two events in the agenda for this year are the annual Carol Service on 8th December and then, a visit by the Warden and the current award winning STC Cricket Team in mid-December. We will keep the membership updated.

Gents, I urge you to keep your memberships updated and encourage young and old Thomians to join the Association. It is your participation that will keep the flag flying! Esto Perpetua!

S. Thomas’ College Old Boys Association Australia Branch (STCOBA)

STCOBA Australia Branch is based in Melbourne. This was the first Thomian OBA to be formed overseas. The founders were a group of old Thomians who migrated to Australia after their

primary and secondary studies at S. Thomas’ College in Sri Lanka in the early 1960s and 1970s.

The main purpose, of the Thomian OBA, is to foster fellowship amongst Old Thomians in Australia and to raise funds that can be channeled to the Thomian fraternity of schools in Sri Lanka (Mount Lavinia, Kollupitiya, Bandarwela and Gurutalawa).

LOCAL NEWS - By Arasu Saravanamuttu On Sunday the 27th May 2018, the OBA invited Thomians and their spouses to a lunch at the Glen Waverley Community Centre to celebrate “100 years at Mount”. The function was well attended with around 170 present. The President welcomed the gathering and then, Past President Jayampathy (Pajjo) Silva introduced the Guest of Honour Senior Past President Frankie David, drawing on Frankie’s contribution towards the success of the OBA. Frankie, in his speech, outlined his thoughts and experiences of the OBA. The writer was then invited to the podium and related an insight into the early years at Mount from 1918 to 1938 which were very challenging times for staff and students. Corinne King also gave us information as to the books donated by her to the College Library in memory of her grandfather C.V. Pereira and her Father Douglas Pereira on her visit to College in 2017. Rev. Gerald Loos was then invited to partake in the Grace. Before saying Grace, Gerald drew attention to his school days and the inspiration teachers bestowed on their students to identify their academic skills and knowledge. Next, the College song was sung with the usual Thomian gusto and the buffet lunch was served. It was a sumptuous Sri Lankan rice and curry with a touch of noticeable spice to the pallet, supplied by P & D foods. A few raffle prizes were also drawn during the function. It must be also mentioned that we had a few Thomian guests from Sri Lanka in attendance. With dessert and coffee served and the usual comradery and fellowship prevalent during the afternoon, the lunch concluded about 3.30pm. Next was the Thomian Dance held on 21st July at the Pullman Hotel, Albert Park. There were approximately 400 guests in attendance. Music was provided by Old Thomian from Sri Lanka Sohan and his band Experiments. As in previous years, it was very encouraging to note the many young and old Thomians in attendance. On the night, mention was made of the late Randolf de Silva for his valuable support and contribution towards the function for many years. His friends were also notable attendees in forming a table, to honour his contribution. Many attractive raffle prizes were on offer, the most notable being two return air tickets to Sri Lanka, sponsored by Sri Lankan Airlines together with a hotel accommodation package donated by a few Old Thomians in Sri Lanka. All those who attended had an enjoyable evening. We look forward to the next year when we meet again. Well done to the committee for a successful function. On 5th August, the Transfiguration service was held at St Aidan's Anglican Church in Noble Park. The celebrant was the Vicar Rev. Gerald Loos. The service was well attended by Old Thomians, guests and local members of the church. After the service with a few words from Rev. Gerald, the College song was sung and we were served with the traditional Kiribath and the necessary accompaniments for a late breakfast. We now move on to one of the most prestigious concerts the OBA has presented in Melbourne, on the 12th of August at the beautiful Bunjil Place Theatre in Narre Warren which opened in October 2017, as they would say is a “State of the art complex”. It was the De Lanerolle brothers in concert with Rushan Hewawasam and the ConChord Choir. I did not know what to expect when I took my seat, but when the welcome message was announced and the curtain opened, it mirrored a setting that resembled a concert in Vienna. The presentation of the choir and back up musicians on stage were well choreographed with striking and colourful attire. Once the concert got into full swing and the two brothers Rohan and Ishan occupied the stage, it was an unforgettable experience with the guests also clapping and singing with the duet.

In my opinion, these two brothers could hold their own on any world stage. They are two individuals who always rise up to the occasion when their Alma Mater needs them. For those who missed an entertaining evening, do not miss the opportunity next time, as there is a possibility they will be back again. After the concert, the OBA hosted a dinner for the choir, musicians and guests at the local bowls club in close vicinity to the concert hall. Congratulations to the OBA for hosting this event. To me, it was a fantastic evening of music all round. Esto Perpetua!

A ‘WORLD OF MUSIC’ The De Lanerolle brothers and the ConChord Choir delight Melbournians

The evening of Sunday 12th August was a melodious indulgence, when the Victorian OBA of St Thomas’ College in celebration of their one hundredth anniversary, presented “a world of music” solo and choral performance, featuring the internationally admired De Lanerolle Brothers, accompanied by the celebrated ConChord Choir in Melbourne, under the baton of the maestro Rushan Hewawasam. Rohan & Ishan through their wide musical genre, have enthralled audiences with every notation of a musical score. Their elucidation of music is simply marvellous, and do not fear to venture into the “Lanney” variations with ease. It is only apt to describe their voices as incandescently uplifting. The ConChord Choir, which has blossomed into a vibrant body of harmony, augmented the evening’s musical grandeur. I was soon overcome with the power of these fifty choristers, all harmonizing their voices to create this wave of emotion that flowed over the audience. I attribute this amazing quality to the diligent dedication of its members and its Director, who in my view left no stone unturned in his quest for perfection and to exude the musicality of every voice. Rushan’s virtuosity in adapting music to suit the ability of its members, who came together as a community choir, is testimony to his remarkable talent. Himself a lyric tenor with a warm, bright and graceful timbre, Rushan leapt out of the programme to captivate the audience with his rendition of “Wind beneath my wings” & “I know him so well” from the musical “Chess”, a different facet to the brothers. The first part of the evening's choral performance opened with Pasek & Paul’s award winning composition from the “Greatest Showman”, which was the perfect introduction to Rohan and Ishan, who then took us on a journey to the mid-19th and early 20th centuries with "You Are My Heart's Delight" & “Mattinata”, which was clearly impressive. The well-known chosen works, spanning the 19th century of Lehár & Leoncavallo, to Presley and the West end/ Broadway genius of Lloyd Webber, provided the full house with some of the finest in musical contribution. The rendition of Arwyn’s “Benedictus” was particularly poignant, as the brothers sang it with the choir with much reverence, invoking the biblical text of “Benedictus qui venit in nomine Domini”. The children’s choir under the guidance of the gifted Rashika Perera Gomez, a choral conductor, fine soprano and cellist herself, brought extra delight to an already colourful event. Their portrayal of the three songs, admirably filled with their beautiful voices, and the audience enjoyment of their renditions, was apparent. The two “big boys” joining the little ones in “Tomorrow” from Broadway’s “Annie”, was a special moment, as it highlighted their inner child.

The tail end of the first half was Jerome Kern’s “Show Boat” classic of “Ol man river”, sung by Ishan, whose resonant lower registers purely transported me into a Paul Robeson performance, the great bass baritone who made this a timeless piece of music. Choral snippets from “Grease” concluded the first half, with the younger choir members very cleverly producing some carefully choreographed dance sequences. The costumes were equally impressive. During the second half Rohan and Ishan took the audience on a journey with D’Hardelot, Presley, Neil Diamond and Humperdinck. One will concede the enduring Sri Lankan classics in “Ganga Addara” and “Master Sir” was covered in nostalgia. The multilingual ability of the soloists and chorus demonstrated to the audience that nothing was beyond the realms of possibility. The audience was encouraged to tickle their vocal chords and unravel all hidden talents during the singing of ‘Oh when the saints’ which was sung in the final segment with ‘Senzenina, two very different but well harmonized pieces. Excerpts from Les Misérables crowned a fine evening of entertainment. Rohan was very polished in his vocal portrayal of Valjean in “Bring him home”, an enchanting piece of music which he sang with much passion right to the final bar, and to pin drop silence. Lorna Ogilvie's eloquent piano accompanying created the perfect musical expressions with her expert touch and prolific mastery of the keyboard. What an elegant support for the soloists and choir. Rushan stepped into a few segments with his outstanding style as a versatile pianist. The cohesive musical ensemble combined very well, to sound like a full orchestral band rather than a small ensemble. They produced a tone that brought out the full colour and richness of the musical masterpieces. An audience of over 400 walked out of the hall with a great sense of fulfilment to a pleasant evening of superb music. It is impossible not to concede that the entire performance lived up to the expectations of all those present that evening, Bravo.

World TT title for Dr Buddy Reid

Former Sri Lanka cricketer and table tennis player Dr Buddy Reid

crowned himself with glory when he won the over 75 doubles

title with Australian partner Igor Klaf at the World Table Tennis

Championships held at Las Vegas. Dr Reid also took the bronze

medal in the singles event of the same category to boot.

In the Doubles, Dr Reid and Klaf beat players from Germany and

America in straight sets and Japan, Germany (twice) in five sets

each in the quarterfinals, semi-finals and final.

Dr Reid and Klaf had lost to the same German pair in the final two years ago in Spain.

Dr Reid said, “My picture is now complete, having won all the available titles singles, doubles and mixed

from junior level in Sri Lanka to Victoria, Australia and the World Championships.”

S.Thomas’ and Dellon Peiris the Best of the Best

Inspirational leader and talented all-rounder, Thomian skipper Dellon Peiris was instrumental in S.Thomas’ winning the coveted Best All-Island Team.

Needless to say, Peiris was adjudged Best Captain and Runner-up Best Schoolboy Cricketer 2018.

The secret behind the success of the ‘School-by-the-Sea’ is their bonding and coordination, which is more like a family unit. Peiris leads

from the front by example, and is a willing listener to his team’s opinions, while being firm with his decisions to ensure their successful execution.

Peiris always speaks to the team before the start of a match to remind them of their ‘duties and responsibilities’ on the field, as a team, and the individual part each one has to play for a successful team effort. A notable feature of Peiris’ leadership is the use of his bowlers in short spells. Speaking to the Sunday Times, Peiris revealed that using his bowlers in short spells never allows batsmen to get their eye in and settle into a pattern.

Peiris is an exceptional all-rounder, having scored over 500 runs as a right-handed middle-order batsman, capturing nearly 75 wickets with his left-arm spinners, and taking 30 catches. These speaks volumes of his capabilities.

Being adjudged Best Team is no small achievement by any standards, and who better than the Best Captain All-Island, to lead such a team to the pinnacle of success in All-Island Schoolboy Cricket.

To Shane Pinder, rugby is not just a game – it’s a passion and a passionate pastime in his life. As a financial businessmen, he still cherishes the lessons he learnt as an outstanding rugby captain for his alma mater S.Thomas College Mount Lavinia. Perhaps, sports would have been the very reason for his gaining an employment opportunity in one of USA’s major financial institution. Talking to the ‘Daily News’ in his Colombo residence hours before his departure to USA, he recalled how an illustrious sports career could help build one’s character. “I believe in teamwork. This is one major lesson that my favourite game – rugby has taught me throughout years,” said Shane Pinder. “Sports helped me to infuse qualities such as leadership, sharing work, character building, delegating work, determination and having faith in my team mates,” he said. Like in many others, school time was the best era of Pinder’s life. “I owe everything to my school; actually it is not just a school, but an institution where students’ characters were nurtured with dignity and honesty.” Speaking further Pinder said, “After winning all our matches including a 6 all draw against arch rivals Royal we unfortunately lost to Trinity 6-27 in 1978. This loss made me determined to somehow win the Centenary knock out Rugby championship in 1978 under my captaincy. S.Thomas had great years in rugby in 1989 under Rizvie Zuhaib, 1990 Naren Perera and 1991 under Charya De Saram, but Pinder chose 1978 as the pick of it. “All above are great years of our college rugby and great teams led by those fabulous leaders but I personally believe it’s undoubtedly the 1978 team that stands out the very best from the rest, not because I was the captain but due to the fact that we played with only five colours men and 10 fresher’s,” recalled Pinder. “My best moment in school rugby was when under my captaincy in 1978 in the Centenary knock out championship we won against the unbeaten league champions Royal College in the semi finals with my team mate and cracking centre Christopher Jordash intercepted and ran nearly 85 meters to score the match winning try which I still cherish and can recall the commentator for the match Bob Harvey stating “ The spectacular Jordashe’s try which tore the heart of all Royalist”. When a group of young men play as team and not as individuals they can achieve great success against all odds.

“Further from that 1978 Thomian team, several players played club rugby, some captained their respective clubs and some players went on to represent the Sri Lankan national team which was a real pleasure for me as their captain,” Pinder said. Turning his attention on and going down memory lane Pinder spoke highly of his centre, ex CR & FC captain, Sri Lanka national player and 1979 Thomian captain Christopher Jordash. “Christo” was a true and humble gentleman on and off the field, a superb unprecedented player who at a glance knew all our moves” I

knew all his moves very well as the captain cum full back and supported him all the way. With our combination we scored many tries for S.Thomas. Speaking further he said Christo was undoubtedly one of the best players in the front line of the 1978 Thomian team. Pinder added that every one of his team members, played their very best in each of their positions. Shane Pinder had the unique feat of representing champion Havelock Sports Club in the knockout tournament in 1978 as a full back while still a schoolboy and earned a reputation as a much sought-after ruggerite. He said “in the 1977 SLRFU knock out rugby tournament, I played for Havies as a full back and came out with flying colours in the quarter finals as well as in the semi-finals but I did not play in the finals as the selectors decided I was too young. I was selected to play in the 10 man touring squad to play for Sri Lanka national sevens team in Hong Kong and was awarded my national team jersey as well as I was in the touring 10 man team photo. In that 10 man Sri Lankan national sevens team which went to Hong Kong comprised Bharatha Hegoda, Hisham Abdeen, late Sandy Hameed, Wimal Aparachchi, Saman Jayasinghe, Angelo Wickramaratne, Ajith Silva and Rohantha Peiris which participated at the Hong Kong Sevens tournament in 1978. In 1979 I decided to hang my boots and move to Australia when I sustained a knee injury during the Mercantile Sevens Tournament. I later moved to the US and have been living there since with my wife, son and daughter. In conclusion Pinder said, “My father, mother , my two uncles Jeff and Dan Ratnam, and STC head coach Quintin Israel “Quinta” have been my major inspiration for who I am today, and I am eternally grateful to all of them”.In order for Sri Lankan rugby to improve and reach higher standards, I believe we should leave politics out of the game, and that goes for school, club and national rugby.
