The summer is a great time to practice reading together, sharing stories, and getting lost in books. You are never too old to hear a great story or learn something new together. Reading out loud is just as important when children are 15 years old as when they are 3 months old. Remember to encourage your kids to draw pictures and write about their summer, too. Included are some ideas of how you can keep your children reading, listening, and writing this summer. They’re fun and easy! Westborough Public Library Summer Reading Program All children (babies -- grade 5) are welcome to participate! Just stop by the Kids’ Department to get a program log to get started. Kids of all ages will be eligible to enter raffles and win awesome prizes! The Summer Reading Program runs from June 10 -- August 30 and kids are able to sign up at any time. Away for most or all the summer? No problem! Grab a log before you leave and come claim your raffle tickets and other goodies when you return. Looking for reading suggestions? It’s never too early to start reading to young children! Babies and toddlers are listeners, building their vocabulary before they can even talk. Choose books like this:

● Brightly colored pictures of simple objects. ● Simple texts, rhyming, and repetition.   ● Books that introduce colors, shapes, counting, and letters. ● Lift-the-flap and sturdy pop-up books to encourage

exploration. ● Board books and cloth books ● Books that help answer a preschooler’s “why?” questions

about their world. ● Classic stories with universal themes such as friendship and

generosity.
