Raymond F. Kravis Center for the Performing Arts

Fueled by your generous support and the fresh start of a new year, we at the Kravis Center are excited by what lies ahead, which ranges from the continuation of our Kravis 2020: The Future is

Now expansion project to the rest of our captivating season. Our eclectic performance schedule reflects ourcommitment not onlyto providing diverse entertainment, but also to serving Palm Beach County through Kravis Cen te r Commun i t yOutreach Events.

I hope that you will join us at our Gospel Gala on February 1, an annual soul-stirring concert hosted by our Community Relations Committee that seeks to uplift and inspire. Accomplished vocalist, multi-instrumentalist andCarnegie Hall veteranDamien Sneed wi l l honor the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. through classical selections, gospel and

jazz, with a special appearance by the Ebony Chorale, under the direction of Dr. Orville Lawton, which first performed at the Kravis Center in 1992. Next month also brings the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra on February 5, the Russian National Orchestra on February 10, and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra on February 26, all part of our acclaimed Regional Arts Classical Concert Series, which is celebrating its 44th season.

Ticket sales alone, however, do not cover world-class performances such as these, plus the innovative arts education programs and other events that make the Kravis Center a premier cultural destination. With that in mind, I invite you to consider attending our first fundraiser of the season, the Palm Beach Wine Auction on January 24. This highly anticipated five-course dinner and live auction, held in the Cohen Pavilion’s Gimelstob Ballroom, supports Kravis Center arts education programs, ranging from Family Fare to the African-American Film Festival and Lunch & Learn lectures to Kravis-on-the-Road programs for students. Tickets for this elegant and exciting evening, which feature some of the most sought-after wines in the world, are $1,000. For details, please visit palmbeachwineauction.org or call 561.651.4320.

We are also looking forward to our second yearly fundraiser, the Kravis Center Gala, which takes place on March 1 and includes a red-carpet reception prior to a spectacular show in Dreyfoos Hall. This year, guests will be treated to a performance by the illustrious David Foster and Friends featuring the Kravis Center Pops Orchestra. Dancing and a delicious dinner prepared by Catering by The Breakers at the Kravis Center will follow in the Gimelstob Ballroom.

As our season continues —from this month’s launch of the ArtSmart continuing education series,The Writers’ Academy at the Kravis Center, to Kravis On Broadway’s Les Misérables in February and Waitress and School of Rock in March, I remain deeply grateful for your support and attendance. Thank you for making the Kravis Center yours, truly, as we aim to exceed your expectations in our artistic, educational and community endeavors. s

DISNEY MUSICALS IN SCHOOLS PROGRAMENTERS SECOND YEAR WITHM O R E M A G I CThe Kravis Center is thrilled to announce that its second year of the Disney Musicals in Schools program, designed to create sustainable theater programs at underserved elementary schools, will include a number of special perks for students from Disney in honor of the national program’s 10th year.

Eight Title I elementary schools in Palm Beach County are participating in the program. The ‘Year One’ schools, new this year, will see each student receive a Disney Musicals in Schools Journal to document and reflect on their experience, $1,000 per school to spend on sets, costumes, props and other items, plus tickets for all students in the program to attend a performance of The Lion King at the Kravis Center. The ‘Year One’ schools enrolled for 2018-2019 are: Academy for Positive Learning in Lake Worth, Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune Elementary in Riviera Beach, Meadow Park Elementary in West Palm Beach and Lincoln Elementary in Riviera Beach.

‘Year Two’ schools in the program will each receive $750 for their performance needs. The ‘Year Two’ schools are: Egret Lake Elementary School, Forest Park Elementary School, Glade View Elementary School and Starlight Cove Elementary School.

Additionally, all eight schools will be eligible to participate in Donors Choose. Disney will match all Disney Musicals in Schools projects on Donors Choose, up to $1,000 per school. Donors Choose is a school-specific crowd funding site that allows teachers to fundraise for materials related to a specific project.

“We are thrilled to be able to share the news from Disney about these wonderful ‘extras’ our local students will receive,” said Tracy Butler, Director of Education for the Kravis Center. “Our first year of the program showed us what a tremendous partner Disney is in helping us create sustainable theater programs. The unique world of musical theater allows students to develop the wide spectrum of skills needed when producing a piece of musical theater, including critical thinking, problem solving, ensemble building and more.”

The four new schools will participate in a 17-week musical theater residency, led by a team of teaching artists trained by the Kravis Center and Disney Theatrical Productions. Each school will receive performance rights, educational support, materials and guidance from the teaching artists at no cost. The program features a professional development focus, through which participating school teachers partner with Kravis Center teaching artists to learn how to produce, direct, choreograph, and music direct, culminating in their first 30-minute Disney KIDS musical at their school. The four original schools will continue in the program with new musicals this year and support from the Kravis Center and Disney.

As a capstone to the experience, the Kravis Center will host a Student Share Celebration on April 2, 2019 during which, each ‘Year One’ school cast performs one production number from their show on the Kravis Center’s Dreyfoos Hall stage for an audience of students, teachers, family and community members.s

de george academy for performing arts

The Kravis Center’s De George Academy for Performing Arts, now in the seventh of its 12-year mission, supports Palm Beach County’s economically-disadvantaged third- through eighth-grade students’ efforts to attend Bak Middle School of the Arts, Dreyfoos School of the Arts or a performing arts college, or to embark on a career in the performing arts.

Approximately 80 students representing 16 Title I schools participated this summer in the The De George Summer Launch, a weeklong workshop for current and incoming elementary youth, providing a sampling of performing arts experiences in theater, music, and ballet and modern dance with the opportunity to focus on specific interests. The third- through fifth-grade students studied with professional arts educators as well as high school-level De George Academy students who shared their own experiences and mentored the younger students.

“The De George Academy is more than halfway through its 12-year mission with the Kravis Center and we have seen tremendous results,” said Tracy Butler, Director of Education for the Kravis Center. “Since 2012, the De George Academy has served approximately 660 students. De George students who apply to art schools such as Bak Middle School of the Arts and Dreyfoos School of the Arts have experienced an acceptance rate of approximately 50%, compared to the 20% acceptance rate of students not enrolled in the program.”

During the 2018-2019 school year, more than 130 students – three times that of the program’s first year – are expected to participate in the Academy’s afterschool and weekend workshops. These workshops prepare Academy students for auditions for performing arts schools. The acceptance rate for De George Academy students at arts magnet schools is 50 percent, compared to only 25 percent for students not enrolled in

the program. Students are nominated by arts teachers in their Title I home schools to participate in the De George Academy.

The De George Academy is named in honor of Kravis Center major supporters Lawrence J. and Florence A. De George. This spring, the De George Residency will mark its sixth year welcoming fifth-through eighth-grade students in a two-week artist residency program. Students will create an original production, to be performed in Persson Hall, under the guidance of teaching artists.

For more information about the De George Academy, or to help support the Kravis Center’s education mission, please call the development department at 561.651.4320 or visit kravis.org and click on Giving & Support.s

Since 2014, more than 4,000 local schoolchildren have benefited from a partnership between the Kravis Center and the South Florida Sc i ence Cen t e r and Aquarium to experience STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and M a th ) educ a t i on enhancements f o l l ow ing se lec t Kravis Center theater performances.

Thanks to a generous donation from Kravis Center Life Trustee Amin Khoury and his wife, Julie, the students attend post-performance workshops at the Kravis Center following several S*T*A*R (Students & Teachers Arts Resource) Series events with scientific themes.

“We know how important STEAM education is for our youth and believe that by helping students make connections to science through art, we enhance their retention and enjoyment of learning these concepts,” said Tracy Butler, Director of Education for the Kravis Center. “Mr. and Mrs. Khoury’s gift continues to make this program available to students throughout Palm Beach County, and we are grateful for the Science Center’s ongoing commitment to STEAM education.”

This season, students who attended Lightwire Theater Company’s performances of The Ugly Duckling in September – during which performers donned electroluminescent-wired costumes and danced in the dark to create dazzling light visuals – also experienced a workshop with Science Center educators called “Energy Efficiency & LED Wearables.”

The workshop compared the energy efficiency of three different types of light bulbs and revealed why LED lights are the most energy efficient, cost-effective and environmentally-friendly. The students also made their own light-up, wearable LED jewelry.

In October, students attended a performance of The Magic School Bus: Lost in the Solar System by Theatreworks USA, then participated in a workshop called “Glow Constellations,” where they learned about the stars in the fall night sky, along with the myths behind the famous constellations. They also made glow-in-the-dark constellations. s

MUSIC “AT EIGHT” MUSIC “AT TWO” Series sponsored by Leonard and Sophie Davis

Two extraordinary soloists opened the 44th season of the Regional Arts

Classical Concert Series. Organist Cameron Carpenter, on tour with the

Jacksonville Symphony, maneuvered easily between a concerto with

near-mystical overtones to an improvisation full of musical pyrotechnics.

Returning to the series after many years, pianist Jeremy Denk added

superlative insights to Beethoven and Schumann.

Of the high-caliber performances to come this spring, don’t miss young piano

sensation George Li, Silver Medalist of the 2015 International Tchaikovsky

Competition, in his Kravis Center debut, starring in Rachmaninoff’s Piano

Concerto No. 2 (February 10 at 2 pm, with the Russian National Orchestra).

The month of March heralds a double debut: the Brussels Philharmonic

and phenomenal violinist Nikolaj Znaider (March 11 at 8 pm). For the April

finale, the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra returns with conductor

JoAnn Falletta in great Romantic-Era hits (April 1 at 8 pm).

THE 2019-2020 ANNIVERSARYFor the 45th Regional Arts Classical Concert Series season, think alliteration

plus piano. Six orchestras – including the Russia, Royal, Russian, Rotterdam,

and RTÉ, for short – bring some of the world’s great pianists to West Palm

Beach: Olga Kern, Jan Lisiecki, Khatia Buniatishvili, Polina Osetinskaya,

Emanuel Ax, and Barry Douglas.

Another exceptional keyboardist, organist Martin Haselböck, leads the

Orchester Wiener Akademie (Vienna Academy Orchestra, December 16, 2019,

at 2 pm) and as guest soloist, the crystalline soprano of American Robin

Johannsen, a specialist in Handel, Haydn, and Mozart.

Kravis Center is honored to introduce the West-Eastern Divan Ensemble, from

the now-20-year-old orchestra, co-founded by Daniel Barenboim, with a roster of

Middle-Eastern musicians: Egyptian, Iranian, Israeli, Jordanian, Lebanese,

Palestinian, Syrian, and Spanish (February 23, 2020, at 8 pm). s

MORE THAN 400 GUESTS GOT THE

ROYAL TREATMENT!

In an event fit for a king, hundreds of Kravis Center guests got a sneak peek into the making of Disney’s The Lion King. On October 29, community leaders, group leaders, media and Kravis Center Board Members, volunteers and staff gathered in Dreyfoos Hall in anticipation of the upcoming Kravis On Broadway premiere of the multi-award winning musical.

The evening, hosted by Disney Theatrical Productions, kicked off with hors d’oeuvres and cocktails and included performances by three Broadway cast members: Adrienne Walker, Tshidi Manye and Kyle Lamar Mitchell accompanied by local choir, The Ebony Chorale, under the direction of Dr. Orville Lawton. Jack Eldon, VP, Domestic Touring and Regional Engagements for Disney Theatrical, treated everyone to a look at the creation of the show, including a behind-the-scenes view of the show’s costumes and set design. We learned that the tour travels with 350 Tony® Award-winning costumes and that six African languages are spoken in the show.

The Lion King will be in Dreyfoos Hall for the first time from April 24 through May 5. s

The Kravis Center has embarked on a $50 million capital campaign to support a campus redesign and facility expansion - Kravis 2020:The Future is Now.

Why is the Kravis Center LAUNCHING this PROJECT? Michael Bracci, Kravis Center Board Chairman

Our Board decided the time was right to enhance and elevate the guest experience at the Kravis Center. We recognized the city had changed around us since we opened in 1992 and we needed to adapt to the community’s needs. We are so proud to be a magnet destination for performing arts lovers, students, residents, tourists and businesses.

What are some HIGHLIGHTS of this REDESIGN and EXPANSION PROJECT? William Meyer, Kravis Center Board member and Chairman of the Operations Committee

Grand-scale improvements are planned for Dreyfoos Hall – increasing the lobby space by almost 6,000 square-feet to accommodate additional food and beverage seating, and to add men’s and women’s restrooms. We are creating beautiful park-like terraced greenspaces and expanding sidewalks to make our campus more pedestrian-friendly. We are also focusing on traffic flow – providing direct Okeechobee Boulevard access and egress from the main parking garage, as well as building a new 280 space valet garage on the east side of the Center.

Why should people consider MAKING A GIFT to the KRAVIS 2020: THE FUTURE IS NOW CAPITAL CAMPAIGN? John Kessler, Vice Chairman of the Kravis Center Board of Directors and Kravis 2020 Capital Campaign Chairman

In the 26 years of serving the community, the Kravis Center has contributed half a billion dollars to the local economy. In the last season alone, the Center served more than 500,000 guests at more than 2,200 events.

We hope the public will consider their gift to the campaign as a gift to the community. This expansion will accommodate a growing base of customers with expanded ease of accessibility to enjoy our schedule of performances.

We are excited about where the project is now and where it’s going.

We welcome community support for this exciting project. For more information or to make a gift to Kravis 2020: The Future is Now, please visit kravis.org/kravis2020 or call the Kravis Center’s Development Department at 561.651.4273.

The Kravis Center honored its Board of Directors and Life Trustees on Wednesday, November 14 in the Kravis Center’s exclusive Carl and Ruth Shapiro Founders’ Room.

Judith Mitchell, the Kravis Center’s CEO, welcomed Kravis Center Board Members and Life Trustees expressing gratitude for their support and commitment to the Center.

“The Kravis Center would not be functioning without the generosity, leadership and continued support that you all provide year in and year out,” Ms. Mitchell said. “Everything that happens here, happens because of you. It is unique in our community and nonprofit world that all four Chairs of the Board of Directors remain so actively involved, Founding Chairman Alexander Dreyfoos, past Chairman William Meyer, immediate past Chair Jane Mitchell and current Chairman Michael Bracci. We are indeed grateful for the guidance, commitment and devotion each of you contributes on a regular basis.”

Ms. Mitchell then recognized with a moment of silence, the recent passing of former Board Member David Kosowsky before turning the program over to Board Chairman, Michael Bracci.

Mr. Bracci provided a recap of Kravis 2020: The Future is Now, the $50 million expansion project currently underway.

“Tonight is a very special evening honoring very important people,” said Mr. Bracci. “As you can see we have made a lot of headway with our expansion. And thanks to everyone on the Board and our Life Trustees, we are well on our way to our goal. We have a lot more to do, but with this fantastic team in place, it’s not only going to be a great season but a successful campaign.”

Two Fine Dining ExperiencesKick Of f the 1 2 T H A N N UA L PALM BEACH WINE AUCTION AN ELEGANT AFFAIR!I f the pre-events are any indication, the 12th Annual Palm Beach Wine Auction on January 24, 2019, promises to be one of the best yet, from the food and wine pairings that evening to the incredible lots on offer.

“This Auction is an ongoing commitment to the future of Palm Beach County and has raised more than $4 million in net proceeds for arts education at the Kravis Center,” said Auction Founder and Chairman Ted Mandes. “We will be offering wines and experiences for purchase at the Auction that you simply cannot otherwise buy.”

As 2018 drew to a close, Auction supporters gathered for two events to celebrate the 2019 event, which will be held at the Kravis Center’s Gimelstob Ballroom in the Cohen Pavilion. In November, the Auction’s committee met for a luncheon at Café Boulud to kick off the festivities. They dined on autumnal delights prepared by Executive Chef Rick Mace.

In December, Trevini Ristorante and owner Gianni Minervini hosted the White Truffle Dinner, a decadent annual pre-event of the Auction featuring three courses infused with the famed white truffles of Alba, Italy. The dinner was sponsored by Jen and Ed Dudnyk.

Chef de Cuisine Zach Bell, Executive Chef of Addison Reserve Country Club, Delray Beach, will be joining Jeff Simms, Executive Chef of The Breakers Palm Beach at the helm of the Auction’s dinner service. Diners will enjoy pairings of “Y” Ygrec, a Sauvignon Blanc, Sémillon blend from Château d’ Yquem, followed by Alexana 777 and Revana Corazon del Sol Luminoso 2012 and Château Palmer 2005. Brian Chamis, sommelier of Café Chardonnay in Palm Beach Gardens and co-owner of The Vine Post wine shop in Juno Beach, returns to the helm for the event’s wine service.

For bidding, the event will feature among its signature lots a stay at Château d’Yquem in Bordeaux, which also includes a visit with CEO Pierre Lurton, lunch at Château Cheval Blanc, dinner at Château d’Yquem and the Imperial of Château d’Yquem 1987 and a Double Magnum of Château Cheval Blanc 2010. Other highlights of the Auction lots include 100-pt wines from Carter Cellars and Guado al Tasso Mattarochio direct from Marchesi Piero Antinori’s cellar in Tuscany. Magnums, 3-, 5-, 6- and one-of-a-kind 9-liter formats from various private cellars will also be featured.

Dr. Barbara Evans Golden

Ever since 1995, when Jerry and I moved to Palm Beach County, the Kravis Center has played an important role in our lives. Coming from the Chicago area, we have always enjoyed the cultural happenings that enrich our lives.

It would break my heart if children could not experience the performing arts at the Kravis Center. As a former elementary school teacher, I have seen firsthand how children’s exposure and participation in artistic expression is an important element to

encourage positive behavioral attributes that can last a lifetime. From my years as a Board member and Chair of the Education Committee, I know how important the education program is to the quality of the lives of children and their families who live in our community, especially for students who attend Title I schools. The Kravis Center’s education program that helps teachers integrate the arts into academic studies such as math, science, and history is a well-researched teaching tool; not easily duplicated, and worthy of the most generous support now and for future generations of schoolchildren. As of 2018, our 26th season, the Center has given more than 2.5 million children, their teachers, family members and friends the opportunity to experience the thrill of the performing arts.

It is a great privilege to have the ability to designate a gift to the Permanently Restricted Endowment Fund to ensure that children for generations to come will be able to participate in the Kravis Center’s education programs.

Corporate Partners

The first Kravis Center Corporate Partners Business Speaker Series event of the season featured the Kravis 2020: The Future is Now capital campaign which supports the campus redesign and facility expansion. At the luncheon, which was held on November 7 in the Gimelstob Ballroom, a distinguished panel of Kravis Center leadership presented the architectural details and construction timelines forthe ongoing expansion project.

Corporate Partners Executive Committee Chairman and President of Cenvill Recreation, Inc., Mark Levy welcomed members and guests and introduced the panel: Michael Bracci, Kravis Center Board Chairman; William Meyer, Kravis Center Board member and Chairman of the Operations Committee and John Kessler, Kravis Center Board Vice Chairman and Kravis 2020 Capital Campaign Chairman.

Mr. Bracci, who leads Northern Trust’s Palm Beach/Treasure Coast Region, opened the discussion, providing the reasons why the Kravis Center Board decided to move forward with the expansion project.

Mr. Meyer, Chairman of Meyer Jabara Hotels, was the next speaker who addressed the details of the project, including expanding Dreyfoos Hall Lobby and adding restrooms; guest gathering space and seating; adding a new valet parking garage; creating pedestrian-friendly plazas; adding a new entrance/exit ramp to the existing garage; and improving overall traffic flow on and around the Kravis Center campus.

Mr. Kessler, Chairman and principal stockholder of Royal Bank of Canada, addressed the financing of the project, reporting the $50 million capital campaign has raised $14 million to date.

“This is an extraordinary performing arts center. Since the Kravis Center opened, it has generated over half a billion dollars into the local economy. In addition, over 2.5 million students have experienced the theater, complete with complimentary bus transportation. Our community is far better off in many ways since the Kravis Center opened. Please join us by contributing to this capital campaign so that all of us will enjoy the new Kravis Center experience well into the future.”

Kravis Center Corporate Partners members are the corporate and professional leadership in Palm Beach County whose mission is to support and enable the Kravis Center to continue its extensive educational and community outreach programs. Corporate Partners membership offers business leaders the opportunity to act as an integral part of the Kravis Center, building awareness of the Center within the business community.
