CountryConfigurationwithGlobalWizard
Differentcountrieshavedifferentrequirementsforhowmodemsmustfunction.Therefore,beforeyouuseyour
modem,youmustconfigureittomatchthedefaultsofthecountryinwhichyouareusingit.Youcanuseoneof
twoconfigurationmethods:

TheGlobalWizardconfigurationutilityisrecommendedforcomputersrunningWindowsServer2008,Vista,XP,
and2003.TheGlobalWizardcanconfigureyourmodemforaspecificcountrywithjustafewmouseclicks.
1. InserttheProductCDintotheCDROMdrive.TheAutorundialogboxappears.
2. ClickInitialSetupandCountrySelection.
3. Chooseeither:
RunGlobalWizardfromCD.Thiswillnotloadthewizardontoyourharddrive,or
InstallGlobalWizardontheHD.Thiswillinstallthewizardontoyourharddriveforfutureuse.
4. TheGlobalWizarddialogboxappears.ClickNext.
5. TheGlobalWizardsearchesforyourmodemandidentifiesit.ClickNext.
6. Selectthe
country
in
which
the
modem
will
be
used
and
then
click
Next.
7. Reviewyourchoiceofcountry.Ifitiscorrect,clickNexttoconfigurethemodem.
8. WhenGlobalWizardannouncesthattheparametershavebeenset,clickFinishtoexit.
UsingATCommandstoConfigureYourModemNonWindowsuserscanconfigurethemodemusingATcommands.Youmustenterthesecommandsinyour

BasicProcedure
ThefollowingstepsarevalidregardlessofwhethertheconnectionisestablishedbythelocalortheremoteMulti
Techmodem.
1.EstablishadataconnectionwitharemoteMultiModemproduct.
2.SendthreeremoteconfigurationescapecharactersfollowedbyATandthesetuppassword,andpress
ENTER.Example:%%%ATMTSMODEM.Youhavefourtriestoenterthecorrectpasswordbefore
beingdisconnected.Ifthepasswordiscorrect,theremotemodemrespondswithOK.
3. YoucannowsendATcommandstoconfiguretheremotemodem.
4. Whenyouhavefinishedconfiguringtheremotemodem,savethenewconfigurationbytyping
AT&W0,and
pressing
Enter.
5. TypeATOandpressEntertoexitremoteconfiguration.Youcanthenbreaktheconnectioninthe
normalway.
CAUTION:Ifyouhangup/disconnectwhileyouareinremoteconfigurationmode,itmaylockuptheremote
modem.
Setup
MultiTechmodemsareshippedwithadefaultsetuppassword(MTSMODEM).Becauseanyonewhohasan
ownersmanualknowsthedefaultsetuppassword,forsecurityyoushouldchangethepasswordandpossiblyalso
theremoteconfigurationescapecharacter.
ChangingtheSetupPassword1. OpenadatacommunicationsprogramsuchasPhoneToolsorHyperTerminal.
2. Tochangethepassword,typeAT#S=xxxxxxxx,wherexxxxxxxxstandsforthepassword,andpress
ENTER.Thepasswordcanincludeanykeyboardcharacter,andmustbeonetoeightcharacterslong.
ThemodemrespondswithOK.
3. Thenewpasswordissavedautomatically.YoucannoweitherentermoreATcommandsorexitthe
datacommunicationsprogram.Thenexttimeyouremotelyconfigurethemodemyoumustusethe
newsetuppassword.
Note:Youcanonlychangethesetuppasswordlocally;youcannotdoitremotely.Also,passwordsarecase
sensitive.Thenexttimeyouenterthepassword,itmustbeinthesamecaseasyousetitup.
ChangingtheRemoteEscapeCharacterToincreasesecurity,youcanchangearemotemodemsremoteconfigurationescapecharacter.Theremote
configurationescapecharacterisstoredinregisterS9.Thefactorydefaultis37,whichistheASCIIcodeforthe
percentcharacter(%).ForASCIIcodecharacters,refertoAppendixE.SettingS9to0(zero)disablesremote
configurationentirelybutifyoudothisremotely,youwontbeabletochangeitbackremotely!

Yourmodemwasthoroughlytestedatthefactorybeforeitwasshipped.Ifyouareunabletomakeasuccessful
connection,orifyouexperiencedatalossorgarbledcharactersduringyourconnection,itispossiblethatthe

defective.

it
is

likely
that
the
source
of
your
problem
lies
elsewhere.

TheModemDoesNotRespondtoCommands Makesureyouareissuingthemodemcommandsfromdatacommunicationsoftware,eithermanuallyin
terminalmodeorautomaticallybyconfiguringthesoftware.(Youcannotsendcommandstothemodem
fromtheDOSprompt.)
Makesureyouareinterminalmodeinyourdatacommunicationprogram,thentypeATandpressENTER.
IfyougetanOKresponsefromyourmodem,yourconnectionsaregoodandtheproblemlikelyisinthe
connectionsetup
in
your
communication
software.
TryresettingyourmodembyunpluggingtheUSBcablefromthemodem,andthenpluggingitbackin.
Tryrebootingthecomputer.
Themodemmighthaveaproblembeyondthescopeofthisuserguide.IfyouhaveanotherMultiTech
modem,tryswappingmodems. Iftheproblemgoesaway,thefirstmodemispossiblydefective.
TheModemCannotConnectWhenAnswering Autoanswermightbedisabled.Turnonautoanswerinyourdatacommunicationsprogramorsendthe
commandATS0=1(ATS0=2ifyouhaveCallerIDservice)tomakesureyourmodeminterminalmode.
TheModemDoesntWorkwithCallerID CallerIDinformationistransmittedbetweenthefirstandsecondrings,soifautoansweristurnedoff
(S0=0)orifthemodemissettoanswerafteronlyonering(S0=1),themodemwillnotreceiveCallerID
information.Check
your
initialization
string,
and
if
necessary
change
it
to
set
the
modem
to
answer
after
thesecondring(S0=2).
MakesurethatyouhaveCallerIDservicefromyourtelephonecompany.
FaxandDataSoftwareCantRunattheSameTime Communicationsdevicescanbeaccessedbyonlyoneapplicationatatime.InWindows2003andhigher,

Youcannarrowthelistofpossibilitiesbyusingextendedresultcodes.Extendedresultcodesareenabledby
default.Iftheyhavebeendisabled,enterATV1X4andpressENTERwhileinterminalmode,orincludeV1X4inthe
modemsinitializationstring.Whenyoudialagain,themodemwillreportthecallsprogress.
IfthemodemreportsNODIALTONE,checkthatthemodemstelephonelinecableisconnectedtoboth
themodemsLINEjack(notthePHONEjack)andthetelephonewalljack.Ifthecablelookssecure,try
replacingit.Ifthatdoesntwork,theproblemmightbeinyourbuildingstelephoneinstallation.Totest
thebuildinginstallation,plugatelephoneintoyourmodemstelephonewalljackandlistenforadial
tone.Ifyouhearadialtone,yourmodemmightbeinstalledbehindacompanyphonesystem(PBX)with
an
internal
dial
tone
that
sounds
different
from
the
normal
dial
tone.
In
that
case,
the
modem
might
not
recognizethedialtoneandmighttreatitasanerror.CheckyourPBXmanualtoseeifyoucanchangethe
internaldialtone;ifyoucant,changeyourmodemsinitializationstringtoreplaceX4withX3,whichwill
causethemodemtoignoredialtones(note,however,thatX3isnotallowedinsomecountries,suchas
FranceandSpain).
IfthemodemreportsBUSY,theothernumbermightbebusy,inwhichcaseyoushouldtryagainlater,or
itmightindicatethatyouhavefailedtoadda9,prefixtothephonenumberifyoumustdial9foran
outsideline.
Ifyoumustdial9togetanoutsideline,theeasiestwaytodialitautomaticallyistoincludeitinthe
modemsdialprefix,e.g.,ATDT9,.Notethecomma,whichinsertsapausebeforethenumberisdialed.By
