True or false?

I should……

Play with science equipment.

Tie back long hair.

Wear eye protection if necessary.

Keep paper and books near the

burner.

Not pay attention to the teacher.

Today, we

should….

NOT play with science

equipment.

Tie back long hair.

Wear eye protection if necessary.

But today, it is NOT necessary!

Just be careful.

And of course, pay attention to

Ms. Milan!

On to the experiment!

Step 1: Define the Problem

What will happen if I combine

baking soda and vinegar?

Step 2: Form a Hypothesis

After mixing water and vinegar

together with baking soda, I

think….

Write the hypothesis in your

book on page 22.

For this experiment, we will use…

Test the hypothesis: Step 1

Using your funnel

pour vinegar into

your bottle.

1/3rd of the bottle

should be filled

Step 2

Using another

(dry) funnel pour

baking soda into

your balloon.

Fill the balloon

approx. 1/2 way.

Step 3

First, stretch the balloon.

Then, cover the top of the

bottle with your balloon.

Make sure you don't let the

baking soda spill into the

bottle early.

Step 4

When ready, lift

your balloon and

let the baking

soda fall into the

vinegar.

Let’s watch and see what happens!

Step 6: Analyze and draw conclusions

Open to page 25 and

answer the questions in

your book.

Include any other

observations.

Step 6

Discuss how the

baking soda &

vinegar produce a

gas which fills the

balloon.

Because HC2H3O2 (the acetic

acid in vinegar) + NaHCO3

("baking soda") gives:

NaC2H3O2 (sodium acetate) +

H2CO3 (carbonic acid). The

carbonic acid then

breaks down into H2O (water)

and C2O( carbon dioxide).
