Factory in-dash wire harness that snaps into the factory radio

Most likely, if you use an optional snap on wire harness adapter tohelp you wire the new radio, the snap on wire harness adapter willinclude the 2 wire connector in its package, NOT the 3 wireconnector.

However, this vehicle uses the 3 wire connector. One of thesewires, the Orange wire, is the (+) 12 Volt Battery wire and you willneed to make a connection to this wire for the new radio to work.Please see the photos below on how to connect to this wire.

Remove Factory Radio

STEP 1:

Open the glove box. Locate and remove two(2) phillips screws that secure the right side of

the plastic dash panel surrounding the radio.

STEP 3:

Once all 3 screws have been removed, thedash can be pulled away from the radio.

The radio is secured to the dash by plasticbrackets attached to the side of the radio.

Locate and remove two (2) 7mm boltscrews that secure these brackets to the

dash.

STEP 2:

Pull out the ashtray to its extended position.Locate and remove one (1) phillips screw atthe bottom left corner under the plastic dash

panel.

STEP 4:

Pull the radio out of the dash. Unplug the blackcable plugged into the rear of the radio. Unplug theplastic wire harness connector from the rear of the

radio.

Plastic wire harness note:

1986 to 1989 models: There will be 3 plasticconnectors: (1) blue, (1) white, (1) black.

1989 and newer models: There will be 1 white orblue connector.

Mounting The Radio To A Kit

The Install Doctor STRONGLY recommends removing thebrackets attached to the sides of the GM radio andmounting these brackets directly to the radio installation kit.

These brackets are secured to the radio with 10 mm bolts.Loosen and remove the bolts. Radio installation kitsdesigned for GM vehicles already have the provisions tomount these brackets to the side of the radio. This methodis the BEST method for mounting and securing the radioinstallation kit to the dash.

NOTE: The GM Delco radio is shorter in depth than the newradio. Directly behind the radio is an air conditioner vent.Read the note in the “Mount New Radio” sectionregarding the selection of a kit to adjust the depth of the newradio.

Smaller sized antenna cable and connectorfound on 1989 and newer General Motorsvehicles

Standard sized antenna cable and connector

General Motors vehicles manufactured after 1989 havea smaller antenna connector than standard antennacables. When you install a new radio, this smaller GMantenna cable will not fit properly into the antenna plugon the new radio. You will need an adapter called a GMantenna adapter to convert this smaller sized GMantenna cable over to the standard size antennaneeded for the new radio.

Wiring The New Radio

Single ‘DIN’ and “Shafted” style radios require theuse of a radio installation kit to mount the radio.

Double ‘DIN’ or ‘1-1/2 ‘DIN’ style radios are designedto install into GM vehicles without the use of a kit.

Completing The Radio Installation

STEP 1:

1986 to 1989 Vehicles:Plug the black antenna cable into the rear of the

radio.

1989 and Newer Vehicles:Plug one end of the GM antenna adapter into theblack antenna cable in the dash. Plug the other

end of the GM antenna adapter into the rear of thenew radio.

All Years:Make sure all wire connections to the new radiohave been completed and plug in any connectors

into the rear of the new radio.

Slide the radio and kit into the opening in the dash.Secure the side mounting brackets attached to the

installation kit with the same two (2) 7mm boltscrews that originally held in the original GM

factory radio.

STEP 2:

Reattach the plastic dash panel surrounding theradio.

The installation is now complete.

Wiring Instructions:The power and speaker wires needed to connect the new radio are attached tothe connector of the wire harness located inside the vehicles dash. The InstallDoctor STRONGLY recommends using an optional snap on wire harness thatis specifically designed to snap into the vehicles dash wire harness connector.This will keep you from cutting the vehicles wires. This optional snap on wireharness will have wires on the opposite side of the connector that will allowyou to splice these wires to the new radios wires. The only other option is tocut off the vehicles dash wire harness connector and splice the new radioswires directly to these wires. The optional snap on wire harness takes all theguess work out of trying to figure out what each wire is in the vehicles dashwire harness. The optional snap on wire harness tell you what each wire is.

Connect the GROUND wire of the new radio to the ground wire of asnap on wire harness OR crimp a ring terminal connector to this wire

and screw the ring terminal to metal inside the vehicles dash.

Connect the +12 Volt Battery or Constant wire of the new radio toeither the +12 Volt Battery wire of a snap on wire harness OR connect

this wire to the +12 Volt Battery wire found in the wire chart above.

Mounting A Radio To A Dash Kit All information needed to complete the mounting of the newradio to the installation kit is included on this sheet. If you need

Before you begin: The radio installation kit needed for this vehicle is shownbelow in pictorial form. There are many manufacturers of General Motors dashinstallation kits available. Each manufacturer produces slightly differentvariations of the same kit. But for our purposes, there are (2) two different styles

of kits for all General Motors vehicles. Why two styles? The reason is that General Motorsuses an abnormal size radio in their vehicles. New replacement radios are thinner but deeper,whereas General Motors radios are taller but less deep. This causes a problem with installingthe new replacement radio. The new radio might be too deep to fit in the dash. Thus, kitmanufacturers produce kits for General Motors vehicles that extend the front face out of thedash to allow new radios to fit. One style is a one piece design where the extension depth isnot adjustable. The second style allows the installer to adjust the depth by using snaps builtinto the kit. The Install Doctor recommends a one piece design for many reasons.

NOTE:

Slide the radio throughthe backside of theinstallation kit. Slide theradios front face plateonto the front surface ofthe installation kit. Noticehow much of the radiosshafts are protruding pastthe front of the kit. Youwill need to remove theexcess by adjusting the

depth of the new radios shaft spin nuts. Pull the radio out of the installation kitand spin on the nuts that are included with the radio. Slide the radio back intothe installation kit. Adjust the nuts by spinning them forward or back to adjustthe depth that the new radios shafts protrude out the front of the kit. To assurea “flush” and professional appearance, make sure that the new radios frontface plate is flush with the new radios display box that is visible through theopening of the installation kit. Complete the installation by securing the frontface plate with the remaining nuts provided with the new radio. The new radiois secured to the installation kit by “sandwiching” the installation kit betweenthe new radios front face plate and the nuts spun onto the shafts of the radiobehind the installation kit.

Once the radios installation sleeve iscompletely slid into the kit, bend out thetabs on the installation sleeve behindthe rear surface of the installation kit.The radios installation sleeve issecured to the installation kit by“sandwiching” the installation kitbetween the front lip and the bent tabsof the radios installation sleeve.

What you need to mount your radio

CAUTION:Do not overtighten thespin nuts securing the frontface plate. Tighten tosecure the radio withoutcracking the plastic.

TIP:If your radio manufacturerprovides 6 spin nuts, use 4 tosecure the radio to theinstallation kit and 2 to securethe front face plate.

For best results, use the bracket that wasattached to the bottom of the General Motorsradio by mounting it onto the installation kit.

Unbolt the mounting bracket from the bottom of the General Motors radio. The new installation kitshould be packaged with (4) nuts and bolts. Use these nuts and bolts to secure the bracketsfrom the General Motors radio to the installation kit. This kit is designed to mount the bracket tothe kit. The manufacturers of these kits have pre-drilled holes into the kits to allow directmounting of these brackets. Make sure to align the bracket the same as it was mounted to theGeneral Motors radio. To orient the kit properly, we need to find which side of the kit is the topand which side is the bottom. Look at the sides of the kit. Notice two screw holes. Notice onehole is bigger than the other. The proper positioning of the kit requires that the larger hole beBELOW the center of the kit. See drawing to right.

2Remove the two bolt-screws from either sideof the lower steering column. Use a socketwrench or a large Phillips screwdriver.

3Grasp the top edge on the left side of thelower-steering column. Pull it down firmly torelease it. It's not necessary to remove it,only to lower it. Behind it you'll find anadditional bolt-screw. Remove this.

4Remove the bolt-screw from thespeedometer cluster. The bolt is mounteddirectly above the RPM gauge.

5Grasp the the dash panel with both hands.One hand should be above thespeedometer cluster; the other should beabove the radio. Get a firm grip on the paneland pull it rearward. This gives you accessto the radio bolts. Remove the two bolt-screws and slide the radio out. Unplug thetwo connections at the rear.

1Loosen the nut on the negative battery cablewith pliers. Lift the cable away from thebattery post. Move it to the side to preventaccidental contact with the post. This willprevent shock; it ensures your safety.

2Open the ashtray beneath the stock radio. Inthe left corner of the ashtray compartment,you'll see a Phillips screw. Remove it.

3Open the glove compartment. Remove thetwo Phillips screws from the left side of theglove compartment. These screws securethe panel around the stock radio.

4Grasp the dash panel around the radio. Pullit sharply to unhook it and access the radio.Remove the two 7 mm bolt-screws from theradio. Pull the radio out. Unplug theconnections behind it.

Tips & Warnings

The S10 had two "twin" vehicles: the GMC Sonomaand the Isuzu Hombre. The radio removal procedureis the same for each vehicle.
