LEADER DEVOTIONALIn ancient Israel, it was customary when a man would propose to a woman that he would pour a

cup of wine and offer it to his beloved. The wine was symbolic of his blood, the very life coursing through his body. So in offering her the wine, he was offering to give his own life for hers. If she drank from the cup, she was accepting his proposal to enter into a covenantal marriage.

At the last supper, Jesus poured a cup of wine and said to His disciples, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.” In essence, Jesus was proclaiming, “I love you. I am offering to you my very life. Will you be mine?” That is the gospel. That God so loved the world that He gave His only Son—His life for ours.

Every time we take communion, we remember that He gave His life for ours. We remember not only what He has done but also how we have responded. We remember the moment that we said, “Yes!” and committed our lives to a covenantal relationship with the God of the universe.

SMALL GROUP SKILL BUILDING

Dealing with Difficult Kids

If you’re like a lot of other small group leaders, when you signed up for the job, you may have imagined yourself pouring out wisdom to a group of kids as they sat in wide-eyed wonder of everything you said. They laughed when they were supposed to laugh, they talked when they were supposed to talk, and they followed your instructions without deviation. But if you’ve been on the job for any length of time, you know that’s pure fantasy. The truth is that most kids are very well-behaved most of the time, but there’s always one! You know the one I’m talking about. You might even be picturing their face right now. If your heart rate is beginning to rise, take a deep breath. Here are a few tips to help you keep difficult kids from wreaking havoc on your group:

Don’t hesitate to separate kids. If you have two kids in your group nicknamed “Dynamite” and “Fire,” don’t sit them next to each other! Some kids just make lethal combinations and when put together, they lose all ability to control their behavior. Simply ask one of the kids to move so they’re no longer seated together.

Have a consistent set of consequences. Having consequences for misbehavior is a way of creating boundaries. Kids love boundaries. In fact, they thrive when trusted adults create and enforce boundaries. State the consequences ahead of time so that all of the kids are aware of them. You might use something like the “3 Strike” rule. Work with your ministry leaders to determine what the different strikes mean or find out if there’s already an established set of consequences for your ministry.

Include the parents in the problem. No one knows the kids in your group better than their parents. Not only can the parents give you insight into the source of the problem, they can probably help you fix it as well. Talk to your ministry leader ahead of time to find out if there’s any way he or she can assist you with that conversation.

Don’t be afraid they’ll stop liking you. A lot of small group leaders have a fear that if they enforce boundaries, their kids will no longer like them. Actually, it’s the exact opposite. When you create and enforce boundaries, kids will respect you. And the more they respect you, the more they’ll like you. You might be surprised to find out that the kids you are closest to are often the ones you’ve had to discipline the most.

I SPY KIDSDirections: Choose a “Spy kid” to secretly “spy” something in the room that is visible to the entire group. Allow the other kids in the group to ask yes or no questions about the secret item. If the group can guess the secret item after asking 5 or fewer questions, they get to ask the “Spy kid” a question about themselves. (For example: What’s your favorite video game?) If the group cannot guess the item after asking 5 or fewer questions, the “Spy kid” gets to ask someone in the group a question about them. If time remains, ask the entire group the following question:

Question: Have you ever had a special celebration meal? What were you celebrating and what was the meal like?

ADDITIONAL TIME ACTIVITY—THUMBS UP, THUMBS DOWNSimply ask the kids in your group to share one good thing that happened this week (thumbs up) and one not-so-good thing (thumbs down). This is a great way for your group to share celebrations and struggles with one another.

STORY QUESTIONSDirections: During the Large Group program, kids will be asked to turn briefly to their small group and answer the following questions:

For Younger Kids:1. What was your favorite part of this story? 2. How would you have felt during the “Last Supper” if you were one of the disciples?

For Older Kids:1. What does this story teach you about Jesus?2. Do you think the disciples needed the bread and wine to help them remember Jesus’ sacrifice?

Why or why not?3.

WASHED CLEAN (Application Activity)Set-up: Pour a ½ cup of white vinegar and 2 teaspoons of salt in a non-metal bowl or container. Depending on the size of your container, you may want to multiply the recipe. Stir the mixture until the salt is partially dissolved. Have some paper towels nearby.

Directions: Show your group a new, shiny penny alongside an old tarnished one. Tell your group that the pennies remind us what sin does to our lives. The new penny is how God created us—perfect and without any blemishes. The old penny is what sin does to us—it covers us in darkness.

Question: What did Jesus want His disciples to remember whenever they ate the bread or drank from the cup?

Say: Jesus sacrificed His body and shed His blood so that our sins could be washed away. Let’s do an experiment to see what that’s like.

Directions: Give each kid in your group an old, tarnished penny. Set the plastic container with vinegar and salt in the middle of the group. Allow 5 kids at a time to put their tarnished pennies in the vinegar/salt mixture. Have your group slowly count down from 10 before allowing the kids to remove their pennies. Using a separate container of water, have the kids rinse and rub their pennies clean. Repeat until all of the kids have had a turn.

Question: How does that remind you of what Jesus did?

Question: What are some things that kids can do to remember the sacrifice that Jesus made?

Note: If you have extra time, allow the kids to continue looking for hidden objects within their “Seek and Find” picture from Large Group.

WORD DROP (Bible Memorization Activity)Directions: Place the stack of “Word Drop” cards in the middle of the group. Each card will have a small part of today’s Bible verse on it. Today’s verse is:

“Everyone should take a careful look at themselves before they eat the bread and drink from the cup.” 1 Corinthians 11:28

Begin by having your group sort through the cards and figure out what order they go in. Have them lay the cards in the correct order in the center of the group. Allow your kids to read the completed verse a few times. When finished, have one of the kids in your group roll the die. If they roll a 1–5, remove that number of cards from the verse. After removing the cards, have your group recite the verse again. If someone rolls a 6, the entire group must stand up, run counter-clockwise around the circle and sit down in their original spot. Once seated, have the entire group recite the verse together. (See below for a possible younger kid modification.) Choose another kid to roll the die and continue doing this until all of the cards have been removed and your group can completely recite the verse from memory. If your group

still needs more practice by the end, lay all of the cards back on the floor in the correct order and play another round. When finished, talk about the following questions:

Question: What do you think it means to “take a careful look at yourself”? Do you ever do that?

Possible Modification for Younger Kids: If your kids still struggle to read, consider using the following modification. Lay the cards in the correct order for the kids to see. Slowly repeat the verse with the kids numerous times so they can begin to memorize it with you. When they seem ready, choose a kid to roll the die. If he rolls an even number, have the entire group recite the verse together. If he rolls an odd number, have everyone in the group make a silly face. Repeat until everyone has had a turn.

POPSCICLE PRAYERS (Group Prayer Activity)Supplies: Popsicle sticks and markersDirections: Give every kid in your group a Popsicle stick and some markers. Tell them to spend a minute or two writing their name on the stick and decorating it however they would like. When time is up, have the kids place their sticks in a plastic cup. Next, have the kids take turns pulling a stick out of the cup without looking and read the name aloud. If they happen to pull out their own stick, have them put it back and draw again. Have the kid whose name is on the stick share a prayer request. Everyone should listen carefully to the request, but encourage the person who drew the name to pay special attention. The person who drew the name will keep the stick in their pocket over the coming week and pray for that person every time they see or feel the stick. Continue taking turns until all of the sticks have been drawn. Finish by closing in a group prayer.

When all the sticks have been drawn, tell the group they can pray for some of the things they shared. After opening the group in prayer, allow the kids time to pray aloud. When the kids are finished praying, close the group in one final prayer.
