10:00 AM - 1:30 PMBishop Sharma D. Lewis is inviting laity from around the conference for a time of connection following her

return from medical leave.

"It is my deep desire to reconnect with you in a personal and special way having been away from you for six months on medical leave,” Lewis said. “Let us

come together both in person and through satellite locations to have a time of worship, fellowship,

anointing, sharing our hearts, and reconnecting. I want to hear from you, and I want to share my

journey with you.”

Location for the event will be at Woodlake UMC (15640 Hampton Park Dr, Chesterfield, VA

23832). There will be a satellite location for the event as well: Thrasher Memorial UMC,

Roanoke District

The event is free and open to all laity. Lunch will be served.

There is a prayer that goes like this “I am no longer my own, but thine. Put me to what thouwilt, rank me with whom thou wilt. Put me to doing, put me to suffering. Let me be employedby thee or laid aside by thee. Exalted for thee or brought low for thee. Let me be full, let me beempty. Let me have all things, let me have nothing. I freely and heartily yield all things to thypleasure and disposal. And now, O glorious and blessed God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit,thou art mine, and I am thine. So be it. And the covenant which I have made on earth, Let itbe ratified in heaven. Amen.”

You will find these words upon entering my office here at the church. There is a gray frame onthe left of the wall housing a calligraphy of the Wesleyan Covenant Prayer that was gifted to me.I have always loved this prayer…in fact it is a tradition within the United Methodist Church tostart the year out with this prayer as it is found within “The Covenant Renewal Service.” Theservice dates back to 1755 and it was written by The Rev. John Wesley. It is one of my favoriteservices in part because the petitions found within the prayer are demanding.

The prayer is in a sense is reaffirmation of our baptismal vows in which we affirm our loyalty toGod and God’s mission as we ask for God to use us in whatever way God pleases to do so. It iscertainly, prayer of ongoing redemption as we strive to be the body of Christ that is one not justwith Christ but with one another. The themes found throughout the prayer are a calling torefocusing on the God who loves us, it is a calling to re-ordering our life to align with God’sloving purpose not just for ourselves as individuals but also to align with God’s loving purposefor the whole world. It is an acknowledgement that our lives and purpose/mission are deeplywrapped up in God’s mission of redemption.

I invite you to pray the Wesleyan Covenant Prayer daily. For being grounded in prayer remindsus that no matter what challenges we face as individuals or as a denomination it is by andthrough God’s grace that we will continue to be a witness of God’s loving kindness to all people.As we enter into this coming year, I am excited to see how God will use us as we partner inministry together. I pray that we will be employed by God or laid aside by God. Exalted for Godor bought low for God – that in all things God will be gloried through our worship, through ourworking, and through our lives both corporately and individually.

I am excited to see God move and shape us in new ways as we seek to live out our mission tomake disciple of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the World.
