Walter’s Word – Association

This month’s word of “Word-Association” is “communication.” Here’s my thought, if you are having some wall work or repair done in your house, do you say “sheetrock” or “drywall”? It’s the same thing, but some people call it one thing and some the other. This often happens in church life and at times can cause confusion and even contention. It’s important to know what words mean and how we are using them. We could be having a conversation with someone thinking they know just what we are talking about and then find ourselves doing two totally different things. Or find that they have told someone something about the conversation that is completely different from what you meant and therein a conflict arises. Words and the definitions attached to them are interesting, how they change over time, how they differ in different parts of the country, even from church to church. Now, this doesn’t mean we go to the extreme of being so careful that we hesitate to have conversations or over explain things. It just reveals the importance of making sure people understand what we mean by the things we say, and yes, that we are careful with the words we choose. Communication is an interesting animal. We need it in all it’s forms, it is a wonderful thing and at the same time so easily misunderstood or misused. I guess my thoughts on this are asking, how well are you communicating? And in that, how well are you communicating the love of God?
