Despite rioting and terrorism at home and isolation abroad from the 1960s onward, the white regime maintained the apartheid system with only minor relaxation until February 1991.

students in Soweto took to the streets to protest

• On 16 June, in what was meant to be a peaceful protest, 23 people were killed.

•including Hector Pieterson, age 12.

what would you do?• There existed a virtual civil war

between the establishment and anti-apartheid forces

•For four years, police and soldiers patrolled South African towns. Thousands of people were detained.

•Deaths mounted on both sides. Many of those detained by the government were interrogated and tortured.

•Anti-government activists used the "necklace method" (burning people alive) to kill Africans suspected of supporting apartheid.
