INSTRUCTIONS:

• This paper consists of four sections, A, B, C and D

• Answer three questions in all; one question must be chosen from section A and two others from

B, C and D

• Not more than one question may be chosen from one section.

SECTION A

1. WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE: Richard III

KING RICHARD: Who intercepts me in my expedition?

DUCHESS OF YORK: O, she that might have intercepted thee,

By strangling thee in her accursed womb,

From all the slaughters, wretch, that thou hast done!

QUEEN ELIZABETH: Hid’st thou that forehead with a golden crown

Where should be branded, if that right were right,

The slaughter of the prince that owed that crown

And the dire death of my poor sons and brother?

Tell me, thou villain-slave, where are my children?

DUCHESS OF YORK: Thou toad, thou toad, where is thy brother Clarence?

And little Ned Plantagenet, his son?QUEEN ELIZABETH: Where is the gentle Rivers, Vaughan, Grey?

DUCHESS OF YORK: Where is kind Hastings?

KING RICHARD: A flourish, trumpets! Strike alarum, drums!

Let not the heavens hear these tell-tale women

Rail on the Lord’s anointed. Strike, I say!

Flourish. Alarums.

Either be patient and entreat me fair,

Or with the clamorous report of war

Thus will I drown your exclamations.

DUCHESS OF YORK: Art thou my son?

KING RICHARD: Ay, I thank God, my father, and yourself.

DUCHESS OF YORK: Then patiently hear my impatience.

KING RICHARD: Madam, I have a touch of your condition

That cannot brook the accent of reproof.

DUCHESS OF YORK: O, let me speak!

KING RICHARD: Do then, but I’ll not hear.

DUCHESS OF YORK: I will be mild and gentle in my words.

KING RICHARD: And brief, good mother, for I am in haste.

DUCHESS OF YORK: Art thou so hasty? I have stayed for thee,

God knows, in torment and in agony.

KING RICHARD: And came I not at least to comfort you?

DUCHESS OF YORK: No, by the Holy Rood, thou know’st it well,

Thou cam’st on earth to make the earth my hell.A grievous burden was thy birth to me;

Tetchy and wayward was thy infancy;

Thy schooldays frightful, desperate, wild, and furious;

Thy prime of manhood daring, subtle, sly, and bloody,

More mild, but yet more harmful-kind in hatred.

What comfortable hour canst thou name

That ever graced me with thy company?

KING RICHARD: Faith, none, but Humphrey Hour, that called your grace

To breakfast once, forth of my company.

If I be so disgracious in your eye,

Let me march on and not offend you, madam.

Strike up the drum.

DUCHESS OF YORK: Hear me a word

For I shall never speak to thee again.

KING RICHARD: So.

DUCHESS OF YORK: Either thou wilt die by God’s just ordinance

Ere from this war thou turn a conqueror,

Or I with grief and extreme age shall perish

And never more behold thy face again.

Therefore take with thee my most grievous curse,

Which in the day of battle tire thee more

Than all the complete armour that thou wearest!

My prayers on the adverse party fight; And there the little souls of Edward’s children

Whisper the spirits of thine enemies

And promise them success and victory!

Bloody thou art will be thy end;

Shame serves thy life and doth thy death attend

TIME: 2 HOURS.

INSTRUCTIONS

Answer all questions.

Your explanations should be clear.

POEM

Pearl of Africa

Heart of this suckling Continent

Star of this ravaged haven

Switzerland of the land of mountainous glory!

Ocean of inexhaustible resources.

Cradle of the rushing Nile

Are locked in a passionate embrace.

Oh, seat of the crowned Crested Crane

How you suffuse me with beauty!

Suddenly,

The pearl lives in an ocean of slime

A peacock stripped of beauty

The rivers froth blood

Ghosts whisper in guttural voices.

Swarming the whole land.

Detention is the password

Genocide is no crime.

2

Darkness in broad daylight

Funerals a national celebration

Whispers in motherland

Cornered whimpering deers in homeland.

Yet the children are perched on the branches

And amidst the illusive shadows

Shafts of light are hidden.

Life will not die

Sanity will not be buried.

Questions

1. What is the poem about?

2. Identify the poetic devices employed in the poem

3. What emotions does the poem invoke in you?

3

Read the story “Two Wives” and answer the questions given after it.

TWO WIVES

A tradesman had two wives .As he had only one house, he had to accommodate both

under the same roof, but the two co-wives could never bring themselves to live in peace

with each other.

The trader fed up with the perennial bickering of the two women, decided to provide

them with separate accommodation and accordingly, added more storeys to his house.

The younger second wife now started living on the first floor and the alternately with

each wife. A stair case connected the two floors.

One morning the younger wife prepared some delicious dishes for the husband, and so

pleased was the latter that he agreed to spend the evening with her for the second day

in succession.

When the husband returned from work late in the evening, and was stealthily climbing

the stairs to go to the first floor his first wife immediately caught him from behind by

the tail of his daura (tunic) and pulled him down .The younger wife who was sitting right

at the top of the stairs waiting for the husband, wouldn’t in her turn let him be dragged

down, so she gave a hand to the trader in order to help him come upstairs. Thus a

virtual tag of war began.

It so happened that a thief had sneaked into the house through the backdoor earlier in

the evening and was waiting for the family members to retire from the night .But this

scuffle ,accompanied by the shrills and shouts of women ,had awakened the whole

neighborhood and made even his escape impossible, let alone a dance to ply his trade.

4

Mean while ,the trader’s plight had become miserable .Neither of his wives would listen

to his pleas or his entreaties and apologies .Each of the women was bent on depriving

the other of the company of the husband.

After the tussle had been going on for quite some time, some neighbors arrived on the

scene and somehow snatched the poor husband away from the churches of the women.

But in the meantime, one of the neighbors had spotted the thief, raised the alarm and

with the help of the neighbours assembled there, had tied up his hands and feet with a

rope.

Next morning, the thief was produced before the king .The king after having heard the

entire story from the trader asked what sort of punishment he would consider adequate

for the thief.”Since he broke into your house” said the king,”l will punish him exactly as

you suggest”.

The trader thought for a moment and replied, If I am to suggest the right punishment

sir, let him be condemned to a life with two wives!”

All the courtiers roared with laughter on hearing the tradesman .But the thief who had

been a witness to the unenviable plight of the trader during almost the whole of the

previous evening, promptly cried out in protest.”Have mercy, my lord” he pleaded, tears

flowing down his cheeks,” give me any other punishment, but not lifelong torture with

two wives.’

The king thought for a moment and said, “But you do deserve to be condemned to a life

of hell so it is only fir and proper that you be married to two women at a time so

saying ,he ordered the ‘sepoys’ to take the thief away and carry out his orders.

i) What is the subject matter of the story?

ii) Explain the significance (meaning) of the following expressions as used in

passage.

a) Perennial bickering.

b) Virtual tug of war

c) Ply his trade.

iii) What language devices does the writer use? How effective are they?
