~ Mr. and Mrs. Everett Eager, who

were married December 2, 1885, are observing their golden wedding anniversary next week, and they are holding a reception ln celebration of the event at their home on Washington avenue Sunday afternoon and , evening between the hours of four

1

and nine o'clock. All their children and grandchildren will be here for the event, and their many friends in the community will be guests at the affair.

Everett Eager. and Belle Booth were 1mlted In marriage by the Rev. J. Cairns, of the Baptist church. The ceremony took place at the old Baptist parsonage which stood on the lot now occupied by the office of the county farm bureau, and they went munediately to their home on Washington avenue just above the site of .their present residence where they have lived for more than 45 years.

Manled Life Here. The Eagers have spent their entire

married life in Dayton, and on the same streeet where they now live. Mr. Eager has the distinction of having lived In the same voting precinct throughout the 55 years of his residence fn the state, although during a· part of that time Washington was still a territory.

,Everett Eager was bom in Mondova, Wisconsin, and when 17 years old he crossed the plans by wagon ' train. He was a member of the party In which the Henry Hunters, earlyday settlers, George B. Baker, now of Seattle, and many other wellknown residents came to Columbia county. It was this group that the. late Dr. W. W. Day, father of Dr. C. H. Day, went to meet at the outsklrts of town upon their arrival after a long and perilous Journey. He carried supplies and comforts to them and gav«, them a welcome to their new home which none has ever forgotten.

Bemalned In Boise .Mr. Eager did not come on to .

Dayton that year, but re~ined in Boise, Idaho, and worked his way i up here two years later. He was still a very young man, and had not : yet determined upon his life's · work. Be gained his first experience in the building business, which he .followed for nearly 50 years, in the construction of n house on the cor- : ner of Fourth and Washington the late Charles Palmer was erecting. When he asked Palmer if there were not something· he could do to earn a little money Palmer questioned him about his experience and equipment. His experience ·'\\'tlS nothing, his tools consisted of an. old. saw, a hammer and a square, but h1s willingness was keen so he got a job, ma.de good, and others !cllo, ved ln rapid succession.

Mr. Eager took an active part in all the early bullding in the commm1lty. He built the Baptist and Congregational churches, and held key positions during the construction of the county court house and Hotel Dayton. He assisted in the

erection of most of the brick buildings now on Main street, and many of the finest old homes in the city bear the mark of his excellent workmanship. At a later day he built the Christian church at Waitsburg, and has llnd a po.rt in the construction of most of the large buildings throughout the county.

Mr. Eager has seen the lumber business from every angle, having oi,erated sawmills, lumber yards and cabinet shops, and having done contracting on a large • scale and fine cabinet work as well. At one ttme he was associated With the late Major John Carr in the . operation · of a planing mill, and for seven years he was manager of the City Lumber & Coal Yards.

Member of Band Mr. Eager was a member of the

Dayton band, the city's first musical organization, for 15 years. In that group he was associated with Kit ' Robinson, the late Sid Frary and I Frank Strohm, R. E. Peabody and many other old-timers. He was a member of the I~ights of Pythias as long as o. lodge was open here, f and has long been identified with thew. o. W. I

Mrs. Eager was born near Silverton, Oregon, where her parents came by wagon train in the early days. , She has often heard her parents re-; count the hardships endured on that ! hazardous journey, and she recalls the fact that her grandmother dled on the trip and was burled in the · mountains along the Old C>regon TraU.

Mrs. Eager came to Washington with her parents, the late Mr. and Mrs.· A. H. Booth. They settled at Waitsburg in 1871 and came here in 1876. Their home was what is now known as the old Smith place, and is now farmed by Frank Hoskins. She was one of a famtly of eight children, and she and a brother, Attorney J, P. Booth, of Portland, are the only ones now living. Mr. Eager, who was also of a. family of eight, hns no brothel's or sisters living.

-Mrs. Eager Is the oldest member of the Congregational church in the point of years of membership, and she is the only charter member of the Halptne society now here. She J

is still active in the Pythian Sisters, r and is a member of the Women of; Woodcraft. !

Three ChUdren. : Mr. and Mrs. Eager are the par-'

ents of three children, Mrs. T. D. Pettyjohn, Great Falls, Montana., c. M. Eager, Athena, Oregon, and Mrs. C. A. Gilbert, Portland. They have

- I four grandchildren, Teddy Pettyjohn I Great Falls, Betty and · Virglni~ Eager, Athena, and Leonard Gilbert , Portland. There are two great~• grandchildren, Jacqueline and Janice Pettyjohn of Great Falls.

.A. Bunch That .Arrived 1n 1878. Seattle, Sept. 22.-In the last Chron

icle I noted with much interest the column "Columbia Chronicle, September 14, 1878," this is the date a bunch from Wisconsin arrived in Dayton. On May 1, 1878, the following named persons left Mondovi, Wisconsin, and started for Dayton, Washington Territory, we were therefore four and onehalf months crossing the plains under the flapping canvas of an emigrant wagon:

Mr. and ·Mrs. E. B. Gifford, Mr. Charles Gifford, Mr. Chester Gifford, Miss Katie Gifford, Mi·. and Iura. Johll Gifford, Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Christian, Mr. Gifford Christian, Mr. Everett Eager, Mr. Willlam Eager, Mr. Eddie Eager, Mr. James Eager, Miss Hattie Eager, Miss Nellie Eager, Mr. and Mrs. Luther Eager, Mr. Clint Gardner, Mr. Will Allen, Mr. Frank Matherson, Mr. and Mrs .. Henry Hunter, Miss Anna Hunter, Miss Lelia Hunter, Mr. Frank Hunter, Mr. Earle Hunter, Mr. and Mrs. James Hunter, Mr. Cusllman Hunter, Mr. George Hunter, Mr. Mason Hunter, Miss Lena Hunter, Miss Elma Hunter, Miss Luella Hunter,

Esther Eager Esther Eager. age 82, pass

ed away March 25th at St. Vincent Hospital in Portland, ?rcgon, following a Jengthy illness.

Mrs. Enger wns born in Dayton on July 8, 1900, the daughter of George W. and Emma Range. She was a member of the

Daylo11 Cougregational Church, Americans Against Union Control of Government, and the Nationul Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Mrs. Enger was prececded in

death by her husband · Wes Eager, three sisters and one brother. She is survived by several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held at the Dayton Congregational Church on Tuesday, March 29, 1983. The Rev. William Gr:1h:1r.1 0tii..:i:1ted. Crem:1til1n f:~::-.\o;-:_ ~~.-: 5":!"",::a;s. :~:--!l:'".•

Miss Lucinda Hessler, Mr. and Mrs. C. D. Ide, Mr. George La.Vergne Ide, Mr. Ernest W. Ide, Mr. Clarence W. Ide, Geo. B. Baker.

Seventeen of the above have died since arriving in Dayton 36 years ago. Ed Eager (Doc Pod) was about 3 ;long in 1878, architecture is a.bout the same as it was in 1878, excepting only increased in size. "Doc Pod" never had much to say as a small boy, but is surely making up for lost time these days.

We arrived in Dayton about 4 P. m. and went into camp in a nice grove of timber on the west side of the Touchet between Main and Commercial streets. Dr. W. W. Day met us there with a wagon load of beef, flour, potatoes and other provisions that looked mighty good to us.

The Chronicle of September 21, 1878. may have had something to sa.y of the arrival of that bunch from Wisconsin.

Dr. W. W. Day lived in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, before moving to Dayton, and therefore was quite well acquainted with a great number of the above named persons. Yours very truly,

GEO. B. BAKER.
