Recording dataOne or more of the computers in your Volvoare capable of recording detailed informa-tion. This information is intended for use inresearch to enhance safety and for diagnos-ing faults in some of the in-car systems. Thedata may include details regarding seatbelt

use by the driver and passengers, the func-tions of various vehicle systems and mod-ules, and status information about the en-gine, throttle, steering, brakes and other sys-tems. This data can also include details ofthe way the car is driven. This type of infor-mation can include, without being limited to,specific details such as vehicle speed, theuse of the brake and accelerator pedals andsteering wheel position. This latter type ofdata can be stored for a limited period whilethe car is being driven and subsequently dur-ing a collision or a near-collision. Volvo CarCorporation will not disclose the stored infor-mation without consent. However, Volvo Car

signed in order to prevent spills and dis-charges into the environment. Our workshopstaff have the knowledge and the tools re-quired to guarantee good environmentalcare.

Reducing environmental impactYou can help reduce environmental impact, for example, by driving economically, by pur-chasing eco-labelled car care products andby servicing and maintaining the car accord-ing to the instructions in the owners manual.

The following hints will help you to care forthe environment:

Decrease fuel consumption by choosingECO tyre pressure, see page 207.

A roof load and ski box increase air resist-ance, leading to higher fuel consumption.Remove them immediately after use.

Remove unnecessary items from the car.The greater the load the higher the fuel

Use engine braking to slow down. Avoid idling. Take consideration of local

regulations. Switch off the engine in longerstationary traffic.

Always dispose of environmentally haz-ardous waste, such as batteries and oils,in an environmentally safe manner. If un-certain about disposal, consult an author-ised Volvo workshop for advice.

    Service your car regularly.

High speed increases consumption con-siderably due to increased wind resist-ance. A doubling of speed increases windresistance four times.

These hints will help reduce fuel consump-tion without increasing travel time or lessen-ing the enjoyment of driving. Apart from be-ing kind to your car, youll be saving money -and the Earths resources.

    Safety in the passenger compartment01

    Always use seatbelts

Heavy braking can have serious conse-

quences if the seatbelts are not used. Ensurethat all passengers use their seatbelts.

It is important that the seatbelt lies againstthe body so it can provide maximum protec-tion. Do not lean the backrest too far back. The seatbelt is designed to protect in a nor-mal seating position.

Releasing the seatbeltPress the red lock button and then let theseatbelt retract. If the seatbelt does not re-tract fully, feed the seatbelt in by hand sothat it does not hang loose.

The seatbelt locks and cannot be withdrawn:

if it is pulled out too quickly.

    during braking and acceleration.

    if the car leans heavily.

Keep in mind the following: do not use clips or anything else that can

prevent the seatbelt from fitting properly.

ensure that the seatbelt is not twisted orcaught on anything.

the hip strap must be positioned low down(not over the abdomen).

tension the hip strap over the lap bypulling the diagonal shoulder belt asillustrated.

    Seatbelts and pregnancy

The seatbelt should always be worn duringpregnancy. But it is crucial that it be worn inthe correct way. The diagonal section shouldwrap over the shoulder then be routed be-tween the breasts and to the side of the ab-domen. The lap section should lay flat overthe thighs and as low as possible under theabdomen. It must never be allowed to rideupward. Remove all slack from the seatbelt

pedals and steering wheel). Within this con-text, they should strive to position the seatwith as large a distance as possible betweenthe abdomen and the steering wheel.

An audio signal and indicator lamp remindthe driver if not wearing a seatbelt to use one.

At low speed, the audio reminder will soundfor the first 6 seconds.

Seatbelt tensionerAll the seatbelts are equipped with belt ten-sioners. A mechanism in the belt tensionertightens the seatbelt around in the event of asufficiently forceful collision. This providesmore effective restraint by the seatbelt forpassengers.

IMPORTANTRepairs must only be performed by an au-thorised Volvo workshop. Work on the SRSsystem can cause malfunction and result inserious personal injury.

    NOTE

The sensors react differently depending onthe course of the collision and whether ornot the seatbelts on the driver and passen-ger side are used. It is therefore possiblethat only one (or none) of the airbags mayinflate in a collision. The SRS system sens-es the force of the collision on the car andadapts accordingly so that one or more air-

    When the systems deploy

If the airbags have been deployed, Volvo rec-ommends:

Have the car transported to an authorisedVolvo workshop.Do not drive with de-ployed airbags.

Let an authorised Volvo workshop replacecomponents in the cars safety system.

    Always contact a doctor.

1The bodywork of the car could be greatly deformed in a collision even without airbag deployment. A number of factors suhit, the speed of the car, the angle of the collision etc. affects how the different safety systems of the car are activated.

    WARNING

Never drive with deployed airbags. Theycan make steering difficult. Other safetysystems may also be damaged. The smokeand dust created when the airbags are de-ployed can cause skin and eye irritation/in-

    Safety mode

If the car is involved in a collision, the textSafety mode - See manual may appear onthe information display. This means that thecar has reduced functionality. Safety mode isa protective state that is enforced when thecollision may have damaged any of the carsvital functions, such as the fuel lines, sensorsfor one of the safety systems, or the brakesystem.

Firstly, remove the remote control key andthen reinsert it. The cars electronics will thentry to reset themselves to normal mode. Thentry to start the car. If Safety mode is stillshown on the display then the car must notbe driven or towed. Even if the car appears tobe driveable, hidden damage may make thecar impossible to control once moving.

Moving the carIf Normal mode is shown after Safety modehas been reset, the car can be moved care-fully out of a dangerous position. Do notmove the car further than necessary.

    Diesel particle filter (DPF)

Diesel cars are equipped with a particle filter, which results in more efficient emission con-trol. The particles in the exhaust gases arecollected in the filter during normal driving.So-called "regeneration" is started in order toburn away the particles and empty the filter. This requires the engine to have reached nor-

mal operating temperature.Regeneration of the filter takes place auto-matically at an interval of approximately300900 km depending on driving condi-tions. Regeneration normally takes between10 and 20 minutes. During this time fuel con-sumption may increase slightly.

Regeneration in cold weatherIf the car is frequently driven short distancesin cold weather then the engine does notreach normal operating temperature. Thismeans that regeneration of the diesel particlefilter does not take place and the filter is not

Start regeneration of the filter by driving thecar until the engine reaches normal operatingtemperature, preferably on a main road ormotorway. The car should then be driven forapproximately 20 minutes more.

When regeneration is complete the warningtext is cleared automatically.

Use the parking heater* in cold weather so

that the engine reaches normal operatingtemperature more quickly.

    IMPORTANT

If the filter fills up with particles then it canbe difficult to start the engine and the filterwill be incapable of functioning. Then there

is a risk that the filter will have to be re-placed.

    General

The car is equipped with two brake circuits. Ifone brake circuit is damaged then this willmean that the brakes engage at a deeper lev-el and harder pressure on the pedal is need-ed to produce the normal braking effect.

The drivers brake pedal pressure is rein-forced by a brake servo.

If the brake is used when the engine isswitched off then the pedal will feel stiff and

more force must be used to brake the car.In very hilly terrain or when driving with aheavy load the brakes can be relieved by us-ing engine braking. Engine braking is mostefficiently used if the same gear is useddownhill as up.

swerve to avoid a hazard for example. Vibra-tion may be felt in the brake pedal when thisis engaged and this is normal.

After the engine has been started and the carhas reached 20 km/h there is a short auto-matic test of the ABS system. The test maybe felt as pulses in the brake pedal.

Cleaning the brake discsCoatings of dirt and water on the brake discsmay result in delayed brake function. Thisdelay is minimised by cleaning the brake lin-ings.

Manual cleaning is advisable with wet roadsurfaces, prior to long-stay parking and after

the car has been washed. Carry this out bybraking gently during a short period while enroute.

Emergency Brake Assistance*Emergency Brake Assistance (EBA) helps toincrease brake force and so reduce braking
