L’ CHAIM PROFILE

L’ Chaim!Page 4 News & “Chailights” of The Greater Altoona Jewish Community

Name: Larry and Terri Primack.Address: Hickory Hill, Hollidaysburg.Family: Daughter Michele, is a third-year law stu-

dent at Duquesne University; son Alex enters the sev-enth grade at the Hollidaysburg Area Junior HighSchool.

High school: Larry graduated from Newburgh FreeAcademy, Newburgh, N.Y., class of 1971. Terri grad-uated Pope Paul VI in Haddonfield, N.J., class of ’71.

College: Larry graduated from Union College,Schenectady, N.Y., class of ’75, and Albany MedicalCollege, Albany, N.Y., class of ’79. Terri attendedWesley College and earned an associate's degree innursing, class of ’71, and she earned a BSN from PennState, class of ’92.

Hobbies: Larry enjoys coaching youth sports, play-ing tennis, golf, skiiing and gardening. Terri loves toplay tennis and golf and enjoys gardening and paintingin water colors and faux painting. She also helps tutoryoung students at Frankstown Elementary.

Congregation: Temple Beth Israel. We’ve been contributors to the Federation cam-

paign since: 1985, when we arrived in Altoona. We’ve been to Israel: Larry was a term abroad for

three months in 1974. He stayed on a Kibbutz namedGesher Hasiv. He worked and studied there, and whenwe got there, it was right after the '73 war. He recalls“harvesting bananas and citrus fruits. We traveled allover. It was such a wonderful, positive experience. Ilearned to love falafel.”

First memories of being Jewish include: AtLarry’s great-grandmother's bungalow colony in theCatskills, which was a typical Jewish crowd, andgoing to Synagogue there. He attended HebrewSchool in West Haven, Conn.

Our strongest Jewish influence at an early age

was: Doing the Passover seders. The leaders in the Altoona Jewish community

when we first came here were: Gary Klein was theRabbi at the Temple. Maggie Kaufman was the presi-dent at that time. We had just moved into our home onRidge Avenue in the beginning of September, andwere unloading our plants from a U-Haul and Gary

drove up and asked us if we wanted to come to hishome for Erev Rosh Hashanah.

Past positions held: Larry served as president ofthe Temple from 2001-04, and is a past member of theboard of the JMC. Terri is a past PTO president atFrankstown.

In our Jewish community, we are most proud:

How much emphasis and teaching is put on theinvolvement of the kids. The rabbis spend a lot of timewith the children and all the volunteers putting in thetime to teach Hebrew and Sunday School and all theactivities help make the children feel involved. Andwe really like all the support the kids give each other– when they conduct services, when they have a Baror Bat Mitzvah, and just everything that helps set ahigher bar. Larry is also proud to report that he startedthe Brain Bowl, a competition involving elementaryschool students at Frankstown Elementary.

Our vision (hope) for our Jewish community

includes: Increased attendance and participationamoung everybody in both congregations and contin-ued cooperation between the two congregations andthe entire Jewish community.

Primacks make Altoona their home

I’ve been part of the altoona Jewishcommunity since: 1979 and I convertedto Judaism in 1981.

Current activities/responsibilities inthe Jewish community: Board memberof Temple Beth Israel, secretary of theFederation, committee chairman of TikumOlam at the Temple, secretary of the 6thWard Ministries, chairman of the Templecalendar and member of Temple BethIsrael Sisterhood.

Past activities/ responsibilities in theJewish community: Sisterhood presidentand vice president of the Temple board.

Best piece of advice I ever received(and from whom): After much thought, Ihave come to the conclusion that I wasnever amenable to receiving advice. Ibelieve strongly that actions speak louderthan words. Over my many years, I havebeen exposed to many wonderful peoplewhose attributes and actions I have triedto emulate. My husband, Warren, was mygreatest mentor. He taught me so muchabout life and, of course, he was the onewho introduced me to Judaism.

My advice to others is: Be yourself butbe open to the gifts of others and keepactive doing good works for others.

What I like best about being part ofthe altoona Jewish community: Being apart of the Jewish community has been amost rewarding aspect of my life. To beinvolved in the Jewish organizations andthe people involved that strive to make thisa better world has helped me to be a bet-ter person. Our people really live by thetenets of Judaism.

We remember themTRIBUTE

So long as we live, they too shall live, for they are now part of us, as we remember them

(Editor's note: Leslie (Bailinger) Mosher, daughter of Jordan and Mitzi, was tragical-ly killed in an automobile accident on May25 in Atlanta. Leslie grew up in Altoona andgraduated from Altoona High School in1973. The following tribute obituary waswritten by close friends Terri Goldberg,Judi Sevel and Cinda Rosenberg).

We were very close friends of LeslieBailinger during the 1960s and early 1970swhen we were in Junior High and HighSchool in Altoona. All of us were veryactive in the Allegheny Mountain Councilof the B'nai Brith Youth Organization(BBYO) and provided leadership in thelocal BBG group. We also attended SundaySchool and public school with Leslie. So wefeel a great deal of sadness as we mark herrecent, tragic passing with these words andmemories.

Leslie was an extraordinary person. Shewas full of fun and laughter. We alwayswanted Leslie to attend parties and theBBYO conventions because they were alot more fun when she was there. She wasa loyal friend and reached out and includ-ed everyone in our events and activities. She made everyone feel welcome and partof whatever we were organizing or tryingto do.

In spite of various health challenges,Leslie was always positive and upbeat. Shenever complained, and she always lookedterrific. She took great care of herself, andmany of us envied her great looks andattractiveness.

We remember having so much fun withLeslie at her home in Altoona, either havingparties or just hanging out in her basement. Her parents were always excited to haveLeslie's friends in their home and made usfeel comfortable and welcome.

Leslie loved children and always wantedto have a family. She was so happy whenshe met her husband, Bob, and settled inAtlanta where she made a wonderful life forherself and had her son, Marshall. Shebecame a great elementary school teacheras teaching young people had been her pas-sion and desire even when we were togeth-er in high school. And she was able to real-ize that dream for herself.

We will always remember our goodfriend Leslie and we'll think of her often.

Nevin Nederlander, 78, died on April 6,following a courageous battle withDiabetes. Nev or Nook was a W.W.II veter-an who was well known for his communityservice. He was Altoona's "Mister Parade"and was a great supporter of athletic andsocial events in the Jewish and general com-munity. He is survived by his wife of 54years, Esther (Thaler) and daughters Sandyand Rene and their families.

David Brozgal, 80, died on March 20."Danny" was a junior accountant andworked in retail sales for many years. Hewas a Sergeant in W.W.II and was a veryactive volunteer in Veterans organizationssince then-including placing flags at theJewish cemeteries annually. He cofoundedthe Central PA Ostomy Society in 1972and was its program chair for over 40years. Danny was honored as theHumanitarian of the Year by the BlairBedford Labor Council for his outstandingvolunteer service to many community

organizations. Danny and his wife June(Diehl) were married for 33 years.

Judy Rosenthal, 51, died on Feb. 25.She was a native of Long Island, N.Y. wholived in Clearfield with her family since1987. Judy worked as a professional qocialworker who practiced, taught and volun-teered in mental health services for chil-dren and adults in various programs. Shewas a devoted wife to husband Shelly andmother to sons Jonathan, Ricky and Scott.

Mollie Evin, 94, died on Jan. 9. Mollietaught for 42 years in the Altoona District, mostly as a 9th grade algebra teacher atKieth Junior High. She was an early rolemodel for many as a professional woman. She traveled widely after retirement andwas active in Hadassah, Sisterhood andretired teachers organizations. Mollie was adevoted daughter, sister and friend. She issurvived by her friends, community familyand thousands of her former students.

We are about to begin our campaign. Please give generouslywhen you are contacted by mail, telephone or in person. Your con-tribution saves Jewish lives throughout the world and enhancesJewish life in our community.

Some of the very special programs we support are through TheAmerican Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC), which thisyear celebrates its 90th anniversary of helping Jews in distressthroughout the world.

We designate the funds for the JDC in Argentina and the FormerSoviet Union. In Argentina when almost all of the middle class wasin financial ruin JDC and the Federations responded immediatelyand generously.

In less than two years, we established a network of care and feed-ing programs throughout Argentina that today: provides vital food, medical, and housing assistance to over 34,500 impoverished Jewsin our welfare caseload; ensures proper nutrition for 2,000 childrenthrough an Emergency School Lunch Program; supplies 10,000 eld-erly Jews with a basket of welfare services distributes an average of15,000 medical prescriptions each month; runs community-wideseders and other special holiday meals for up to 15,000 suddenlyimpoverished Jews.

In the Former Soviet Union, JDC continues to care for 240,000Jewish elderly through the network of 174 Hesed welfare centers. Ofthe total number being helped, 125,000 are Nazi victims whoreceive financial support through the Claims Conference, the SwissBanks Settlement, and other Holocaust Restitution funding sources. The remaining 115,000 are Jewish elderly that rely on funds prima-rily through the American Federation system and Foundations forsupport.

JDC also lays the foundation for Jewish renewal throughenabling Jews to regain knowledge, resources, and skills of Jewish

Communal life. Through our new Children’s initiative, JDC is work-ing to respond to the suffering and poverty among the youngest Jewsin the Former Soviet Union.
