Summer Term—Issue 23 Friday 7th July 2017

Dear Parents, Guardians and Students,

SACRED HEART NATIONAL WINNER OF PUPIL PREMIUM AWARDS 2017

On Thursday of last week, Sacred Heart stepped onto the national stage as teachers from the school were invited to the Houses of Parlia-ment to the ‘Pupil Premium Awards 2017’ – and discovered Sacred Heart had won the award for the best secondary school in the country.

The awards recognise and reward schools who consistently demon-strate that they have used their funding effectively to make a signifi-cant difference to the achievements of these pupils. Sacred Heart received the top award from the Minister of State Robert Goodwill MP, and Rob Grimshaw, Chief Execu-tive of the Times Educational Supplement, praised the school high-ly for demonstrating innovative use of pupil funding to directly support its pupils.

The award is not just about the trophy and the kudos; the school will now benefit from a wide range of prizes which include visits to and joint projects with the Science Museum, the Royal Academy of Arts, the London Symphony Orchestra and the National Space Centre.

This prestigious award for Sacred Heart proves one thing above all else. No matter what your back-ground, no matter where you live or what your income is – if you receive the right support and excellent teaching from your school and you are willing to put in hard work your-self, you can achieve whatever you want to. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.

THEY THINK IT’S ALL OVER……. IT IS NOW !

Two hundred and seven. It sounds like the number of sweets in the jar, doesn’t it? If I tell you that it’s the number of HOURS of GCSE and A level exams sat by Sacred Heart students over the past six school weeks, you will begin to realise just how hard they’ve been working this

summer. For each exam that lasts one hour, multiply by ten to account for the hours of revision and prepa-ration leading up to that exam, and the overall total figure becomes unreal – but believe me, the sheer commitment and application of the Sacred Heart students has been plain to see since the public exams began in the middle of May. Suffice it to say that the teachers and students have done their bit, it’s now over to the markers and examiners – and we wish Years 10, 11, 12 and 13 all the best for their results days.

CELEBRATION AND EXPLORATION

As we draw nearer to the end of the

academic year and are released from

the pressure of public exams, the

Heart, and there are literally dozens

of trips taking place throughout

these last few weeks. Duke of

Edinburgh students have returned

from successful expeditions, KS3

pupils have been on a trip to Lille in

France, and sixth formers from

Sacred Heart have just landed in New

York. By the time you read this, the

annual school Sports Day will have

taken place at Tooting Bec stadium.

There is no such thing as ‘winding

down’ at Sacred Heart – we plan to

Our camping spot was in a beautiful woodland setting. We all enjoyed the peacefulness of the site which was so different from home. The hooting of owls replaced the noise of traffic, and there were plenty of squirrels and deer to spot around every tree. Mitchell even claimed to have seen a badger. On Monday we had a fascinating workshop on fire lighting, and were able to put our skills into good

practice in the evening, lighting our own campfire and toasting marshmallows. This was preceded by a

wonderful barbecue around the fire pit, with children cooking their own food in teams. After a very early

start the following day, we

attempted the campsite's

aerial trail - a nerve-racking

high wire activity. All the

teachers were really

impressed with the chil-

dren, who behaved impec-

cably throughout the trip.

Everyone was able to excel

in different ways, whether it

was through excellent or-

ganisation and teamwork

skills, their expertise in

cooking or fire making, , or

agility and a showing good deal of bravery on the high ropes. Everyone joined

in to make the trip a

success and it is one we look forward to repeating with future 9C classes.

On Monday, 3rd July, 12 pupils from 9C set off on an over-night camping trip with Mr Purvis, Ms Williams and Mrs Heth-erington. The pupils had a wonderful time learning how to put up tents and camp safely.

2017 has been a successful year for the Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award at Sacred Heart with twenty-seven Year 10 pupils taking part. Over the course of the year the participants have taken part in a sport, a volunteering activi-ty and they have perfected or learnt a new skill. On return from half term they undertook a three-day practice expedition in East Sussex, learning or refreshing skills in navigation and camp craft, and using trangia stoves to cook on. We were fortunate to have some lovely sunny days but this made walking in the heat, with heavy backpacks, hard work. The final expedition took place last week around Billingshurst in West Sussex. With completely opposite weather conditions, pupils had to con-tend with 14 hours of torrential rain on the first day, which equally made

walking, and cooking without shelter, difficult. But everyone coped admirably and all teams worked well together, making it to the end and, one voluntary withdrawal aside, they all passed. Accompanying staff members were really impressed with the four groups and their positive attitudes. Well done to all the participants for their hard work and thank you to all staff who made the expeditions possible.

P.E. DEPARTMENT NEWS ...

Isle Of Wight Trip 26th – 30th June 2017

9 Young people were selected for their hard work and commitment to our Greenhouse Table Tennis pro-gramme, This trip included 5 hours of Table Tennis per day and 4 hours of team building fun activities per day. Everyone trained hard when in the hall and got involved with all the other young people from other schools which was great to see. The activities included, Swimming in the sea, swimming pool, mini-golf, arcades, bowling and orienteering. The pupils were also responsible for washing up, making their own breakfast and managing their own money. There were 54 young people in total on the trip and it was great to see them all getting together and creating memories that hopefully they will never forget. Our pupils really did us proud. Looking forward to more trips in the future. Thanks Mr D Basterfield Table Tennis Coach

SACRED HEART AND OUR HOUSE SAINTS ...

During our Mass to celebrate the Feast of the Sacred Heart, Fr Victor blessed 5 new mosa-ics which will go on display in our school over the next few weeks. These beautiful works of art were create by pupils led by Madam Basra and the art department. They show the Sacred Heart of Jesus and our House Saints – Thomas Becket, John Bosco, Mary Magda-lene and Frances Cabrini. Catholic have always been comfortable using art in our churches, homes and schools as a focus for worship. This attitude is influenced by our belief in the Incarnation. We believe that because the invisible God made himself visible in Jesus Christ, it is appropriate to represent Jesus in human art forms. Jesus visible in religious art can serve as a focus for worship and an aid to prayer. So as we look at our new mosaic of the Sacred Heart let’s remember Jesus love for all hu-mankind. Jesus showed his love for people in many ways but his greatest act of love was dying on the cross to save us from our brokenness. Let us also use our House Saints mosaics to reflect on their lives and what we can learn from their example. Both St John Bosco and St Frances Cabrini were committed to the education of young people – do we make the most of all that is offered to us at School? St Thomas Beckett stood up for his faith and didn’t take the easy way out when faced with challenges - do we stand up for God in our daily lives? St Mary Magdalene life reminds us that we can start afresh and receive God’s mercy - do we turn to God and ask him to heal our brokenness? Mr Thompson Head of Religious Education
