‘IT’S IN YOU TO GIVE’: THE NECESSITY OF BLOOD DONATION PRIOR TO THE
HOLIDAY SEASON
HALIFAX, Oct. 17, 2016 – There is often a shortage of blood donations when the commotion of
the holiday season unfolds. To ensure that there is a secure blood supply for Canadians, it is
critical for first-time or repeat donors to make an appointment in the period leading up to the
holidays.
Canadian Blood Services in the HRM is encouraging university students to consider donating
blood to offset this seasonal decline. There will be a series of rotating donor clinics at all
university campuses across the metro, scheduled over three days from Oct. 25-27, 2016, 8:30
a.m.-8:30 p.m
Sue Blasutti, Director of Donor and Clinic Services, Canadian Blood Services, emphasized the
importance of blood donations during the duration between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day.
“Holiday festivals often pull people away from their donation appointments, causing a decrease
in the amount of blood available for patients at this time,” Blasutti said. “There is, however, a
constant need for blood and blood components in Canada.”
Canadian Blood Services aims to accommodate students with its flexibility, understanding the
conflicting schedules that potential donors may have. The schedule of potential donation times
on university campuses in the HRM has expanded for this upcoming blood drive. Students are
able to book appointments in advance by calling 1-888-2-Donate, or by going online at
www.blood.ca.
While almost one of every two Canadians is eligible to donate, only one in 60 Canadians gave
blood in 2015. Blood donation is a simple process, taking about an hour to go through essential
screening safeguards. Canadian Blood Services estimates that 100,000 new donors are needed
every year to maintain demand for blood and blood components.
