It is an all-composite aircraft, the first of its kind in the country, that will cater to the demand for trainer aircraft at the flying clubs. SAMAAR campaign On 17 March 2021, the Jharkhand government announced the launch of the SAAMAR (Strategic Action for Alleviation of Malnutrition and Anaemia Reduction) campaign to tackle malnutrition in the state. The campaign aims to identify anaemic women and malnourished children and con- verge various departments to effectively deal with the problem in a state where malnutrition has been a major problem. The scheme was launched as every second child in the state is stunted and underweight and every third child is affected by stunting and every 10th child is affected from severe wasting and around 70% of children are anaemic, as per National Family Health Survey-4 data. SAAMAR has been launched with a 1000 days target, under which annual surveys will be conducted to track the progress. National Policy for Rare Diseases On 30 March 2021, the Union Health Minister Dr. Harsh Vardhan approved the “National Policy for Rare Diseases 2021”. The Policy aims to lower the high cost of treatment for rare diseases with an increased focus on indigenous research with the help of a National Consortium. The policy also stresses the creation of a national hospital-based registry of rare dis- eases so that adequate data is available for the definition of rare diseases and research and development. The policy focuses on early screening and prevention through primary and secondary health care infrastructure such as Health and Wellness Centres and District Early Intervention Centres. International India-Australia Dialogue On 30 March 2021, the 6th round of the India- Australia Dialogue was held and the two sides discussed Disarmament, Non-Proliferation and Export Control in the virtual format. The two sides also exchanged views on con- temporary issues of mutual interest in the areas of nuclear, chemical, biological disarmament and non-proliferation, conventional weapons, outer space security and strategic export control. Global Gender Gap Report 2021 On 30 March 2021, the World Economic Forum released the ‘Global Gender Gap Report 2021’. As per the report, India is ranked at 140th position among 156 countries. In 2020, India had ranked 112th among 153 countries on the index. Iceland is the most gender-equal country in the world for the 12th time. The report was drafted based on the evolu- tion of gender-based gaps among 4 key factors like Economic Participation and Opportunity, Educational Attainment, Health and Survival and Political Empowerment. The report said that India had so far closed 62.5% of its gender gap. It noted that most of the decline was seen on the Political Empowerment sub-index. The Report added that a reduction in women’s labour force partic- ipation rate was another reason for the drop in India’s rank. The lowest rank of 156th was attained by Afghanistan. 17th BIMSTEC Ministerial Meeting On 1 April 2021, the 17th BIMSTEC (Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation) Ministerial Meeting was held virtually under the chairmanship of Sri Lanka. 'HANSA' aircraft (HANSA-NG).

It is an all-composite aircraft, the first of its

kind in the country, that will cater to the demand

for trainer aircraft at the flying clubs.

It is retro-modified with a glass cockpit, bub-

ble canopy design, IFR compliant avionics with

smart multi-functional displays, efficient digitally

controlled Rotax 912 ISC engine that gives the

aircraft superior performance, range and

endurance.

SAMAAR campaign

On 17 March 2021, the Jharkhand government

announced the launch of the SAAMAR

(Strategic Action for Alleviation of Malnutrition

and Anaemia Reduction) campaign to tackle

malnutrition in the state.

The campaign aims to identify anaemic

women and malnourished children and con-

verge various departments to effectively deal

with the problem in a state where malnutrition

has been a major problem.

The scheme was launched as every second

child in the state is stunted and underweight

and every third child is affected by stunting and

every 10th child is affected from severe wasting

and around 70% of children are anaemic, as

per National Family Health Survey-4 data.

SAAMAR has been launched with a 1000

days target, under which annual surveys will be

conducted to track the progress.

National Policy for Rare Diseases

On 30 March 2021, the Union Health Minister

Dr. Harsh Vardhan approved the “National

Policy for Rare Diseases 2021”.

The Policy aims to lower the high cost of

treatment for rare diseases with an increased

focus on indigenous research with the help of a

National Consortium.

The policy also stresses the creation of a

national hospital-based registry of rare dis-

eases so that adequate data is available for the

definition of rare diseases and research and

development. The policy focuses on early

screening and prevention through primary and

secondary health care infrastructure such as

Health and Wellness Centres and District Early

Intervention Centres.

International

India-Australia Dialogue

On 30 March 2021, the 6th round of the India-

Australia Dialogue was held and the two sides

discussed Disarmament, Non-Proliferation and

Export Control in the virtual format.

The two sides also exchanged views on con-

temporary issues of mutual interest in the areas

of nuclear, chemical, biological disarmament and

non-proliferation, conventional weapons, outer

space security and strategic export control.

PM visit to Bangladesh

Prime Minister Modi visited Bangladesh on 26-

27 March 2021. He attended National Day cel-

ebrations marking 50 years of Bangladesh’s

independence on 26 March 2021.

This is the historic visit to celebrate Mujib

Borsho-the birth centenary of Sheikh Mujibur

Rahman, 50 years of the establishment of

diplomatic ties between India and Bangladesh

and 50 years of Bangladesh's war of liberation.

Modi and Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh

Hasina jointly laid the foundation stone for

power evacuation from Rooppur Nuclear Power

Plant being built with Russian help. The Indian

involvement will be a $1 billion credit line.

They inaugurated the Bangladesh leg of the

Bapu-Bangabandhu Digital Museum, a passen-

ger train on the Chilahati-Haldibari rail route

and three border haats.

Both nations signed five MoUs in the fields of

Disaster Management, trade, NCC, supply of

ICT equipment and setting up of sports facilities.

Society Forum 2021

The world Summit on the Information Society

(WSIS) Forum 2021 was held recently which

represents one of the world's largest annual

gathering of the ‘ICT (Information

Communication Technologies) for the develop-

ment community.

On 22 March 2021, attending the summit

Union Minster of State communications Sanjay

Dhotre said that India leveraging Information

Communication Technologies (ICTs) to Bridge

Digital Divides.

The minister had drawn attention to the

development of telecom infrastructure in remote

areas and said that under the flagship program

BharatNet, nearly 6,00,000 villages are being

connected through the laying of more than

4,00,000 Km length of optical fibre cable and

the use of satellite communication services.

Global Gender Gap Report 2021

On 30 March 2021, the World Economic Forum

released the ‘Global Gender Gap Report 2021’.

As per the report, India is ranked at 140th

position among 156 countries. In 2020, India had

ranked 112th among 153 countries on the index.

Iceland is the most gender-equal country in

the world for the 12th time.

The report was drafted based on the evolu-

tion of gender-based gaps among 4 key factors

like Economic Participation and Opportunity,

Educational Attainment, Health and Survival

and Political Empowerment.

The report said that India had so far closed

62.5% of its gender gap. It noted that most of

the decline was seen on the Political

Empowerment sub-index. The Report added

that a reduction in women’s labour force partic-

ipation rate was another reason for the drop in

India’s rank. The lowest rank of 156th was

attained by Afghanistan.

17th BIMSTEC Ministerial Meeting

On 1 April 2021, the 17th BIMSTEC (Bay of

Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and

Economic Cooperation) Ministerial Meeting was

held virtually under the chairmanship of Sri

Lanka. The meeting took note that the BIMSTEC

Centre for Weather and Climate, being hosted in

India, is fully functional with the state-of-the-art

facilities to provide Disaster Early Warnings.

The meeting also endorsed the

Memorandum of Association (MOU) on the

Establishment of BIMSTEC Technology

The government of India announced the pres-

tigious 51st Dadasaheb Phalke Award 2019 for

Rajinikanth for his contribution as an actor,

India topped the medals table at the 2021

ISSF World Cup held in New Delhi which was

Modi launched the ‘Jal Shakti Abhiyan: Catch

the Rain’ campaign via video conferencing.

The Campaign will be undertaken across the

country, in both rural and urban areas, with the

theme “catch the rain, where it falls, when it

falls”. It will be implemented from 22nd March

2021 to 30th November 2021 - the pre-mon-

soon and monsoon period in the country. It will

India Japan agreement

India and Japan entered into 4 agreements to

support health care projects on 30 March 2021.

Under these agreements, Japan will support

India’s health care projects which are funded

under the Grant Assistance for Grassroots

Projects (GGP) scheme.

The GGP scheme is designed to support

development projects framed to meet human

needs in developing countries.

The total amount to be disbursed for the four

projects is around 29.30 million Yen ($

265,000). The amount will be spent on the

Provision of Medical Equipment to different

hospitals in Uttar Pradesh and Manipur.

India-fourth strongest military force

China has the strongest military force in the

world while India stands at number four, as per

the study released on 21 March 2021 by

defence website ‘Military Direct’.

The ultimate military strength index was cal-

culated after taking into consideration various

factors including budgets, the number of inac-

tive and active military personnel, total air, sea,

land and nuclear resources, average salaries,

and weight of equipment.

China has the strongest military in the world,

scoring 82 out of 100 points in the index followed

by the USA, despite their enormous military bud-

gets, comes in 2nd place with 74 points. Russia

got third place in the index.

"Pabbi-Antiterror - 2021" Exercise

During the 36th meeting of the Council of the

Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure (RATS) held in

Tashkent, Uzbekistan on 18 March 2021, the

decision was taken to hold the joint exercise

"Pabbi-Antiterror-2021".

RATS, headquartered in Tashkent, is a per-

manent organ of the SCO which serves to pro-

mote the cooperation of member states against

terrorism, separatism and extremism.

The SCO (Shanghai Cooperation

Organisation) is an economic and security bloc

in which India and Pakistan were admitted as

full members in 2017. Its founding members

included China, Russia, Kazakhstan,

Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

‘PASSEX’

On 24 March 2021, the navies of India and

Madagascar undertook joint patrolling of

Madagascar’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ)

and also conducted a Passage Exercise

(PASSEX).

This is the first-ever joint patrol between the

navies of India and Madagascar reflected the

growing defence ties between the two Indian

Ocean neighbours aimed at the common objec-

tive of ensuring maritime security in the Indian

Ocean Region (IOR).

Oman was awarded the Gandhi peace prize for

The Gandhi Peace Prize is an annual

award instituted by the government of India

since 1995, the 125th birth anniversary com-

memoration year of Mahatma Gandhi. The

award is open to all people regardless of

nationality, race, language, caste, creed or

sex.

The award carries an amount of Rs. 1

crore, a citation, plaque and an exquisite tradi-

tional handicraft/ handloom item.
