Celebrating Birthdays
On February 11 Jaime gave birth to a healthy 7 lb 7 oz baby boy, Caden. Jaime is one of our volunteers who helps with the grocery shopping bus. Mom and babe are doing well, spending this precious time together. A Note from Jaime: I’m delighted to introduce my son, Caden. We’ve been enjoying getting to know each other, and are feeling so fortunate for all of the support we’re receiving from family and friends. We look forward to visiting everyone at SVSS McRae House once it is safe to do so. ...All the best, Jaime and Caden

PROTECT YOURSELF FROM EMAIL FRAUD Tips, Tricks and Resources
Email scams are abundant, often mimicking legitimate emails from companies you know. This is
called “phishing”.
WARNING SIGNS Poor grammar, spelling errors, exclamation points, unprofessional language, requests for money owed
WHAT NOT TO DO
Don’t click any links, reply, provide financial information, or contact the company via the contact
info provided in the email.
WHAT TO DO Look at the sender’s email address. If the name of
the company does not come after the @ , it is likely a scam. If you are still unsure, contact the company directly through contact information not provided in the email (ex. a paper document, a phone number from their official website or the official business
page on Google)
TIP Keep the contact information for your bank,
internet, and phone provider somewhere safe. If you are unsure if you are being scammed, you can
call or email them to check, using the correct contact information that you have saved.
Andrea and Katie, law students at UVic, recently worked with Saanich Volunteer Services Society and Pro Bono Students Canada to produce some really incredible materials on how to spot scams and what to do if you have become a victim of a potential scam. For more detailed material on other types of scams, ask us for a copy of our informational trifold or for the full research document.
If you think you have been scammed, keep all information relating to the scam, report the incident to the police (250-475-4321) and the Canadian Anti-Fraud Agency (1-888-495-8501). If it involved your
bank or internet provider, contact them too and they will help you secure your accounts.

at SVSS
For many of us, this pandemic has become a time to get creative at home and try out new recipes. We miss seeing your friendly faces on our weekly grocery shopping bus, but we want to make sure you are safe, so we have partnered with BC211.ca and Beacon Community Services for a new, contactless way for you to get your ingredients during the lockdown.
If you are interested in having one of our fantastic SVSS volunteers pick up your groceries, give us a ring at (250) 595-8008 or email Linda at [email protected].

Seniors 101 has featured products and services available on Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands for Seniors and their families for 14 years. We cover a wide variety of topics, services and information which are useful and interesting for everyone.
Search engines like Google love us, and our quality content ensures that our readers return again and again. In an age when web sites come and go in the blink of an eye, we’ve stood the test of time and continue to grow and adapt to our web visitor’s needs.
We affirm that Seniors are not a sub-species; we are just as actively involved in every part of our community as any other age group. Certainly, our needs and priorities have changed throughout our lives, but our hopes and challenges remain the same.
We face life—one day at a time.

Karel describes Louise as the most
wonderful friend she has ever had
and says that being Louise’s friend
gives her confidence and that they
share “hearts & minds.”
It’s Spring! And that means your garden might need a
little extra tender loving care.
Our volunteers are happy to help with light yard work
including: Pulling weeds, doing minor pruning, and
tidying up the yard.
