Saarijärvi on my mind“GRAB ON TO WHATEVER YOU CAN”, said my grandfather Gabriel Vilkkilä in remembrance of the battles of his youth in a great America.

There’s a deeper meaning in the motto: get yourself togeth-er. Take what’s important and holy to you, and don’t let go.Family, friends and taking care of their and your own health can carry you across a dark tide. And when it comes to Saarijärvi white-water route, canoe and paddle will lend you a hand.

Culture and public health blossom among the people. They shine from down to up, moving slowly, curling to the sky like smoke from a lakeside sauna at Midsummer.

Our wealth ripens in cultural frenzy and brightens in their offerings. In celebration of our independence our minds are sensitized by Saarijärvi’s song and our church’s soldier’s burial mounds at Saarijärvi and Pylkönmäki church yards.

“Either Häkkilä’s wilderness or Mahlu’s hills, whichever wilder? Everything seems so beautiful.Pyhäjärvi or Summanen, or Kalmari’s boreal forest and Hännilä’s swamps.Land earned by generations’ battles, history obligates.”

Tapani Kiminkinencountry-doctor

SAARIJÄRVI –from pine bark parish to a viable town

PAAVO’S PATH –exhibition

SETTLEMENT OF SAARIJÄRVI is one of the old-est in Finland — at Pylkönmäki’s Selänpääjoki a habitation from over 10 000 years ago has been discovered. A little bit younger habita-

tion has been found from Kalmari’s Eerola and from the north end of Summasjärvi. An unique catch pit system that has required a very organized community has been found in the area. This community spirit has lasted for thousands of years, because the feeling of solidarity is still among the people of Saarijärvi.

National poet Johan Ludvig Runeberg lived at Saarijärvi between the years 1823 and 1825, and our town made a great impression on him and his work. In Finland’s anthem he describes the beautiful landscapes of Finland, the same kind he saw and expe-rienced during his years in our town. Follow Runeberg’s footsteps, experience Julmat Lam-mit, see the statue of Paavo during guided tour at Saarijärvi’s church and visit the Runeberg exhibition of the Gentry Home Museum.

Welcome to enjoy the beautiful nature, lakes and culture to Saarijärvi — Finland’s heartland!

J.L. Runeberg

Area was formed in to chapel congregation of Palvasalmi. The name Saarijärvi became established. The Municipality of Saarijärvi was established. Saarijärvi celebrated 150 years as a municipality and 30 years as a town anniversary.

Palvasalmi became an independent congregation.

HISTORY OF SAARIJÄRVI

Finnish national poet J.L. Runeberg lived at Saarijärvi between the years 1823 and 1825.

Saarijärvi became a town.

lihoods are more clearly based on research and special know-how. Key elements of Finn-ishness are still forest and sauna – in a renew-able form.

The Stone Age Village, Runeberg exhibition of the Gentry Home Museum, Juhola, the Tap-per artist brothers’ home farm and museum’s main building’s exhibit Paavo’s path tell the whole story.

Museum’s exhibit leads the visitor from Runeberg’s times to Finland’s present day as an independent country. Themes of the exhib-it are national landscape, national character, educational work, culture and art, economy, sports and among other things forest and sauna.

To honor Finland’s 100 years of independ-ence Saarijärvi’s museum arranges Paavo’s path –exhibition. Museum’s other exhibition locales lead the visitor from the Stone Age to the time of crop failures and the birth of Finn-ish identity.

During the 1800s people lived in a class so-ciety, and most of the livelihood came from arable farming. In Saarijärvi Finland’s future national poet J.L. Runeberg acquainted him-self with the people who were forced to eat bark bread. Through these experiences came an idea to write Saarijärvi’s Paavo –poem, the ideal image of a Finnish farmer.

With his works Runeberg created the ideal image of Finns and Finland’s nature. The suc-cess of the future nation was based on firm popular education work, which resulted in national heroes and icons in art, culture and sports.

The rapid transformation of livelihood has resulted in many closed small farms and centralized living. At the same time new live-

THE SAARIJÄRVI CHURCHThe parish of Saarijärvi was founded in the year 1628. The present church is the third church of the parish of Saarijärvi. The former ones were built in 1628 and 1694, the present church was built during the years 1846−49.

The Church is a masterpiece of the contem-porary architects and designers. The cupola dominating the church is 18 meters in di-ameter. A cupola as big as that usually de-mands structures made of stone, so building a cupola like this in a wooden church is one of the most outstanding achievements in Finnish architecture of the 19th century.

If you would like to have a tour of a church, please contact verger Pia Rantala +358 40 7090 298, and if you wish to have prayers after the tour, contact the parish office +358 40 1534 736.

Pay a visit to the Pylkönmäki church, which was designed by Jaakko Kuorikoski in 1864 and repairs were designed by Alvar Aalto in 1926. Keskustie 40, 43440 Pylkönmäki

Do you have fisherman's luck?

Fishing is a great hobby also for beginners, just put a worm on the hook and try your luck with fishing. Dusk and dawn are the best times to catch fish, since small fish come out of their hiding places around sunrise and sunset to catch insects. When the small fish set out, the predatory fish and bigger valuable fish will also come out to eat, so in these times the fisherman’s luck will double. What could be more exciting than tiring a silverside brown tout as the summer evening darkens!

In Saarijärvi you can fish in numerous lakes full of fish, such as the clear Lake Pyhäjärvi, several rapids and the Pajulampi pond that is located almost in the town centre. Check out the fishing tips and the information about necessary fishing licences!

KONTTIJOKI — KOTAJOKI RIVERS, RAPID FISHING There is plenty of room to fish, because the rivers are over ten kilometres long put to-gether. The destination is at its best in the ear-ly summer and in the fall, because the rapids may be low in water during midsummer. Silmäkoskentie 19, 43100 Saarijärvi

MAJAKOSKI RAPID, RAPID FISHING The rapid’s plant species are zander and brown trout. Natural prey species are Eu-ropean perch, grayling and northern pike. Casting and fly fishing are allowed in the rapid. There are a lean-to and a campfire place in the area. Kallinjärventie 2, 43130 Tarvaala

FISHING LICENCES

Angling is particularly fun for the children. Excitement is at its peak when the float sinks under water and the rod arches in the little fisher’s hand. Is the catch a perch or even a rainbow trout? Rent a boat and go try your fisherman’s luck for instance in the Pajulampi pond in the town centre.

Go to listen to the rapid’s roiling and to have exciting fishing experiences with rapid fishing. You might also see a white-throated dipper watching your fishing on a rock by the rapid.

In Saarijärvi you can buy a casting and trolling licence for the lake districts that covers several fishery collectives. Contact information for all the partners can be found at www.saarijarvenkalastusalue.fi

Saarijärven osakaskunta has several rapid fishing destinations and the Pajulampi pond recreational fishing destination for catching rainbow trout, for which you can rent a boat at Ranta-Kivi, Jyväskyläntie 34. www.saarijarvenosakaskunta.net

Take care of your licences, pack your lunch, get fishing tips and go fishing!

We wish you tight lines!

FISHING LOCATIONS IN SAARIJÄRVIRIEKONKOSKI RAPID, RAPID FISHING The stream section splits into two rapids, the upper Riekonkoski and lower Taipaleenkoski rapids. There is a total of 400 metres of rapid area for fishing. A lean-to and a campfire place. Riekontie 138, 43250 Kolkanlahti

PAJULAMPI POND, RECREATIONAL FISHING DESTINATION Saarijärven Osakaskunta manages the recreational fishing destination that is sub-ject to licence. The pond has been plant-ed with already the third batch of rainbow trout and about 1 000 young whitefish. Hyppyrimäentie 5, 43100 Saarijärvi
