Seattle Academy of Arts and Sciences is an independent secondary school with a mission to prepare our

students to participate effectively in modern society. We, therefore, seek a diversified student body and

faculty. We offer a demanding college-preparatory curriculum integrating the arts and emphasizing a global

perspective. We utilize the resources of our urban environment to extend our classrooms, to enhance our

programs, and to engage our students in public service. Most of all, we seek to graduate motivated young men

and women of talent and integrity who are prepared to contribute productively to a changing world.

We are pleased to bring you Seattle Academy’s 2012-2013 Annual Report, which documents another successful year for our school. Since 1983, when Seattle Academy first opened its doors, community and philanthropy have been essential to our success. In the earliest days we relied on community support and contributions to fulfill basic needs from physical spaces to desks and school supplies. Thirty years later Seattle Academy continues to grow and flourish, and while our needs have changed, community and phi-lanthropy remain vital to the success of our school and our students. We are privileged to have a dedicated community who give generously to help us prepare students for college and life.

Gifts to the Annual Fund and the Financial Aid Endowment support the financial aid program to sustain our culture of inclusion and diversity. In 2012-2013, over $2.5 million in financial assistance was granted to 23% of our student body. As a result, 153 students received the benefits of a Seattle Academy education.

Dear Friends of Seattle Academy,

In 2012-2013, Seattle Academy families, alumni, faculty, staff, and friends donated over $1.3 million to the Annual Fund, our primary fundraising campaign. The majority of annual gifts are unrestricted allowing flexibility to meet immediate needs in the life of our school. Other gifts are designated by the donor to fund a specific program or area of interest. Every gift is a valued investment in our students and faculty.

Last year your gifts enriched the experience of 686 students in the Middle and Upper Schools. Consider just a few ex-amples of how your support made a difference: iPads and related applications were implemented in the classroom to enhance knowledge and creativity through project-based learning; new trips to Turkey (Middle School) and China (Upper School) were added to the Outdoor & Travel program; SAAS athletes traveled to state competitions in Basketball, Cross Country, Golf, Soccer, Tennis, Track, and Ultimate Frisbee; the Speech & Debate team won its sixth consecutive state championship title; and SAAS received the 2013 Excellence in Arts Education Award presented by ArtsED Washington and the Kennedy Center Alliance for Arts Education Network.

Seattle Academy provides a unique educational program committed to Participation and Excellence. We engage and challenge students of all abilities across all pillars of the curriculum – Academics, the Arts, Athletics, and Outdoor & Travel programs. Through the Culture of Performance students stretch beyond their comfort zone to take risks, develop new talents, and master challenges. Pivotal mo-ments of personal growth and discovery take place in the classroom, on stage, across the court and playing fields, in community service, hiking a trail, paddling a river, even exploring a distant land and culture.

On March 9, 2013, a record number of people turned out for SAAS in the City – Seattle Academy’s annual celebration to benefit students and faculty. This sold-out event drew over 420 guests, 100 student performers and volunteers, and featured eight talented alumni presenters. Special thanks go to the countless parent volunteers, faculty, and staff whose vision, planning, and preparation helped create this special evening. Collectively, our community raised $160,029 for the Faculty Development Fund, which supports professional development and resources to fuel curricular innovations.
