A Message from our
CEO and Board PresidentWe continue to envision a Los Angeles where all individuals have access to quality health care. Every day in our waiting rooms, we witness the positive impact that your generous support makes in our patients’ lives. We see patients who are controlling their diabetes; the gentleman whose life was saved by a simple test (story page 14); and the relief in a mother’s eyes because she did not have to choose between putting food on the table and getting her child immunized (story page 7). With your financial support in 2013, we touched the lives of nearly 22,000 men, women and children, and proudly delivered more than 100,000 patient visits.
Saban Community Clinic enters 2014 with a stronger commitment to enrich and save more lives. Your contributions have enabled us to invest in an Electronic Health Record system, which we’ll launch this summer. By digitizing our patients’ health history, our medical teams will be empowered to collaborate with greater efficiency across our three Clinic locations, and proactively detect and prevent illnesses to keep our patients healthy.
Our work and your support are more important than ever before. While the Affordable Care Act is providing many of our neighbors with primary care services they haven’t had before, unfortunately too many at-risk patients are falling through the coverage gap that will continue to exist. In fact, nearly 60 percent of Saban Community Clinic’s patients — more than 16,000 men, women and children — will remain uninsured!
With your assistance, we will keep our doors open and will never turn patients away due to inability to pay for vital health services.
2014 is shaping up to be a year of extraordinary opportunities, and we thank all of our health providers, our board of directors, and charitable donors who continue to lead the way to ensure everyone in our community has the quality health care they need and deserve.
Sincerely,
Jeffrey Bujer Bob Broder Chief Executive Officer Board President

25 Years Leading the WayClinic-supporter and Los Angeles County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky joined Saban Community Clinic to celebrate the philanthropic service of Ellen Hoberman at the 37th Annual Dinner Gala. Supervisor Yaroslavsky presented Hoberman with a proclamation that read, “With profound admiration and grateful appreciation for 25 years of selfless and compassionate service to the community as Chair of the Annual Dinner Gala and for being a true friend of the Saban Community Clinic.” Ellen Hoberman’s leadership, determination and passion for the idea that “health care is a right, not a priviledge” has been the driving force behind the Annual Dinner Gala’s success, and Saban Community Clinic is grateful for her continuous support.

Delivering Hope and Holiday Cheer For nearly 400 Saban Community Clinic patients, the holiday season was made a little brighter at the 24th Annual Patient Holiday Party held on December 10, 2013. With generous support and in-kind donations from local businesses and organizations, Saban Community Clinic delivered warm clothes, toys, daily essentials and a hot meal. It was a joyful afternoon full of holiday spirit which included an appearance by Santa Claus, much to the delight of the children.
Saban Community Clinic thanks Event Chair and Friends Board Member Marcia Steere for her leadership
in making this special occasion possible for our patients. We also thank and recognize the esteemed individuals and organizations who contributed to this event, including Karl Pettijohn, Martha Henderson, Pam and Butch Pierson, members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Roslyn and John Boulianne, Kathy and Marc Fogel, Jonathan Chu, Tiffany Aguayo and the countless volunteers who believe in our collective ability to make a positive difference in people’s lives.
Jim Slotnick Fellowship in Medicine CelebrationSaturday, September 6, 2014 The David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA
You are invited to celebrate 30 years of the Jim Slotnick Fellowship in Medicine at Saban Community Clinic!
In partnership with the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, the Jim Slotnick Fellowship was created to offer a deserving first year UCLA medical student the opportunity to serve as a paid fellow at Saban Community Clinic. The fellowship experience includes first hand exposure to patient care and the
chance to work with clinic providers as well as academic faculty from UCLA and USC and residents from Cedars-Sinai and Kaiser Permanente. Each fellow also completes a clinical project and presents findings at a poster fair.
Join Saban Community Clinic on September 6, 2014 at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA for the launch of Jim Slotnick’s memoir, “A Short Life”, and to celebrate the Jim Slotnick Fellowship in Medicine.

A message from our Director of DevelopmentOne of the things I enjoy so much about working at Saban Community Clinic is the commitment and
dedication of its contributors. I am lucky; on a daily basis I have the pleasure of connecting with people who care deeply about the health and wellbeing of others, which is a personal passion of mine. Here is one beautiful example of this devotion and care.
Barbara Marshall, Friends of the Saban Community Clinic board member for many years, recently celebrated her seventy-fifth birthday on March 9, 2014! That joyous day also marked fifty-one years of marriage to her husband, writer and producer Garry Marshall. While preparing invitations to her intimate birthday celebration, Barbara began to write “No gifts, please.” Kathleen La Gambina, Marshall’s daughter, reminded her mom that, “people like
to bring something; so rather than getting a bunch of potted plants you have nowhere to put, why don’t you ask them to bring an item for the Clinic’s patients?” Barbara loved the idea, and decided to ask her friends and family to bring a pair of new socks or individual sized soaps as ‘her gift’!
Barbara says, “We never forget the Clinic after all these years. Whether donating money or in-kind items, we are always thinking about how we can touch the people the Clinic takes care of.” She recalls another birthday when she asked her guests to bring a baseball cap, so the Clinic’s homeless patients had something to cover their
head during the summer. When travelling, Barbara keeps these patients in mind by collecting the tiny soap, shampoo, conditioner and lotion from the hotels!
Our showers are open six days a week for our homeless patients, and nearly 16,500 showers are provided annually. The Clinic is always in need of donated travel-sized soap, body wash, shampoo, conditioner, body lotion, hand cream, deodorant and sunscreen. We also collect new underwear and socks, gently used clothing, and monetary contributions to support our patients who need it the most.
In honor of Barbara and Garry, the two momentous occasions they just celebrated, and with their spirit of serving others, I invite you to make a contribution as well! Please make donations to Saban Community Clinic at 8405 Beverly Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90048, care of Pamela Yang, Development Coordinator or call Pamela with any questions at (323) 330-1667.

WHY I GIVE…“After attending a Saban Community Clinic event many years ago, I was inspired to support the organization. A few times a year, when I have a bit of extra money to spare, I write a check to the Clinic. It feels good to know that I am contributing to the health of people in my community!”
— Jordan Budde is a TV writer. Born in Texas, he has been living in Los Angeles for 25 years.
Our donors come from all walks of life and each have their own reasons for giving to Saban Community Clinic. Each generous donation ensures that the Clinic can continue its mission of providing affordable quality health care to families in need.

The Community Advisory Council is an official committee of Saban Community Clinic comprised of volunteer patients who advise the executive management and Board of Directors on the improvement of patient services.
After Losing Her Business, Clinic Helps Mother Enroll in ObamacareChange isn’t always easy, and for 35-year-old Marie who lost her business nine months ago, understanding the changes in health coverage under the Affordable Care Act was the last thing on her mind.
“I heard of Obamacare in the news, but after losing my business, my only concern has been to find a way to get myself and my two boys back on our feet.”
Faced with an uphill battle, Marie was diagnosed with cancer weeks after losing her business. “When I heard my doctor give me the diagnosis, I didn’t know what to do; I wasn’t sure how I was going to make it and pay for treatment.”
Saban Community Clinic was there for Marie.
“When Marie came to us to enroll in health coverage, she was in tears,” said Roxana Rangel, a Certified Enrollment Specialist at Saban Community Clinic. “She was relieved when I explained that she was eligible for
Medi-Cal coverage, which would help her cover the cost of her cancer treatment, and health services for her two boys.”
Although change is not always easy, the changes in health care coverage under the Affordable Care Act mean that eligible families and individuals are no longer one medical emergency away from bankruptcy. The new reality is that insurance companies cannot discriminate on the basis of age, sex and medical condition, giving way to healthier communities where our neighbors get primary care and preventative services they haven’t had before.
Since October 2013, Saban Community Clinic has assisted more than 8,000 Los Angeles County residents, like Marie, fill out applications for health insurance through Covered California, and sign up for Medi-Cal, the state’s Low-Income Health Plan.
Since October 2013, Saban Community Clinic has assisted more than 8,000 Los Angeles County residents fill out applications for health coverage through the Affordable Care Act.

Forever Free Legacy CircleWe welcome you to join the Forever Free Legacy Circle which honors an elite group of contributors who have selected Saban Community Clinic as a recipient of a planned gift. If you have already designated the Clinic as a beneficiary in your will, please let us know so we can add you to the circle.
Stand By MeGrammy Award-winning composer Mike Stoller, who with the late Jerry Leiber wrote Jailhouse Rock, Stand By Me and other hits, and his wife, acclaimed jazz pianist, harpist and singer, Corky Hale Stoller, have been supporting Saban Community Clinic since the early 1990s. “Because of our belief in the good and important work of the Clinic” they established the Stoller Family Charitable Lead Annuity Trust in 2003. The trust pledges an annual distribution of funds to the Clinic for a total of twenty years, and the Clinic just received its tenth of twenty planned gifts.
The Clinic received over $270,000 in planned gifts last fiscal year from various trusts and individuals. Some
of these gifts were anticipated and budgeted for, such as the Stoller’s annual gift; some were surprises. Planned gifts can be as detailed and well thought out as the Stoller Family Charitable Lead Annuity Trust, set up to distribute funds to that family’s most beloved causes during and/or after their lifetime. They can also be as simple as naming a charity like Saban Community Clinic in your will.
Regardless of the vehicle, planned gifts are important for the Clinic. They impact the annual budget and help provide thousands of patient visits. And, one of the wonderful things a planned gift offers the donor is that you don’t have to have discretionary money now to contribute — but you will immediately enjoy the deep satisfaction of knowing that
your gift will make a crucial difference for so many at some point.
We are grateful to the Stoller family and all of our Forever Free Legacy Circle members for the support! For more information on how to set up a planned gift for Saban Community Clinic, or to let us know that you have already done so, please contact Director of Development Allyn Cioban at 323-330-1656 or [email protected]

Clinic Contributors Invest in Tomorrow’s Medical Providers, Today’s FellowsDonald Spetner, a board member of the Friends of the Saban Community Clinic, and his wife, Laurie Goodman, a long-time Clinic volunteer, have generously contributed to the Clinic by starting an endowment fund for the Jim Slotnick Fellowship in Medicine. The fellowship was created in memory of former clinic volunteer and UCLA medical student Jim Slotnick. It is a partnership between the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and Saban Community Clinic and provides first year medical students a paid opportunity to work with a medical team delivering care in a community clinic setting.
Laurie was close with Jim Slotnick and his family, and has overseen the Fellowship on a volunteer-basis since it was created thirty years ago by Penina Slotnick, Jim’s mother. Laurie has fostered a successful partnership between the Clinic and UCLA and
ensures that a Fellow is selected and stewarded annually.
Laurie says, “Being involved in the Fellowship has been so rich and rewarding to me. Thanks to a gift given to us by my parents, Joan and Jim Goodman, we are thrilled to be able to contribute to the Fellowship, to the Clinic and to the future of medicine in such an important way.”
The Jim Slotnick Fellowship in Medicine Endowment will ensure continuation of the program by creating a succession plan for administration and leadership as well as providing fiscal sustainability.
In addition to funds donated to commence the Endowment, Slotnick’s memoirs entitled “A Short Life” will be published to generate further revenue for the Fellowship. The book is a young man’s journey through cancer, the medical system and facing death — yet is inspiring, life affirming, heartfelt,
and unexpectedly filled with humor. All book proceeds will go to the Endowment Fund. See page four for details about the Clinic’s first ever Slotnick Fellowship Celebration, an event honoring the program’s first 30 years, and book launch!
Join Laurie and Don in supporting tomorrow’s physicians by contributing to the Endowment Fund. Sponsorships are available for the event, and contributions are welcomed separately, as well!
Contributors July 1, 2012 – June 30, 2013Saban Community Clinic would like to thank the following Circle members for their contributions of $1,000 or more during last fiscal year. By giving so generously, they have helped the Clinic provide high quality health care to the most vulnerable members of our community.

Who you’ve helped…
“I felt very secure with my life, I had my future planned — retirement, health care — but then I found
myself without work and without health insurance. One day, I had a terrible cold and severe rattling on my chest. I thought it was bronchitis. My sister took me to the emergency room, and there I found out I had a large mass on my left breast. I was devastated. I went to Saban Community Clinic and Dr. Casey KirkHart helped me right away. Now, having gone through 12 rounds of chemotherapy and 28 rounds of radiation, today I am cancer-free. The Clinic helped me out and pretty much saved my life.”

Who you’ve helped…
“When I went to Saban Community Clinic I went simply for a physical. I’m pretty active and I thought I
was eating healthy. But then my doctor told me my sugar was out of control. I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes. It took me by surprise, but I immediately thought about my family — I needed to be healthy so they can have a good life. With the help of Dr. Shahram Javdanfar, I’ve taken control of my sugar without any medicine, by doing two hours of exercise everyday and having a very good diet. I feel better and have more energy. I am so happy with all the care I got from Saban Community Clinic.”
